Suicides

Last week two freshmen at my high school attempted suicide. One succeeded.

I later learned the motive was to "see what would happen."

On one hand... the death is tragic... on the other hand... did we really want that sort of thing to procreate?

Wow, that sucks. How are people at the school reacting?

The one who couldn't commit suicide obviously had a good reason for trying. Only a blithering idiot couldn't kill himself.

I must admit -- not heard that one yet.

Darwin Award?

On a more serious note, those kids must've had some pretty tough lives to be curious enough to see what death was like. I think--maybe they were well off and were curious.

Looking at this a certain way, it does make a certain kind of sense. I mean, one of the greatest mysteries is what happens after we die. They could be trying to find that out.

Of course, that doesn't mean they aren't idiots.

I would venture to say that he wanted to see how his family/friends/community would react to his passing. Would they grieve, or would they simply go on with their lives as if nothing had happened. He might have thought that like with the movies, his spirit could roam the town, and he could see then for certain if anybody really cared. Tragic to say the least.

Tragically stupid would be more like it. It's a shame that someone could do that for such a dumb reason.

I take it the two of them did this together? It's too random any other way. How is the survivor taking it? Watching someone die can't have made his life any better than it was before... :(

Reminds me of the article I read about this guy who shot his two nephews in the leg because they wanted to know how it felt to be shot. The nephews were 11 and 13, I think, and their uncle was 34. He was incarcerated for mind-boggling stupidity, among other things.

That generally sucks. Normally people don't WANT to figure out what happens after death. It's fine to speak of death as just another stage in ones spiritual journey or something, but this life is pretty good.

I daresay that's almost enough motivation to nominate them for a Darwin Award. ::Nods:: Still, that's gotta be pretty hard to deal with.

Let me put this bluntly and simply:

Don't joke about suicide.

I've been there. For most of my life I've been Clinically Depressed and some docs were gonna write me up as slightly manic depressive. I had at least two attempts on my own life but I never went all the way through with it. The motives that drive people to the point that they would consider suicide aren't rational...to us. For a person who is in the middle of a suicidal episode it comes down to a point that some emotion overwhelms their desire to live and they would rather fufill the wishes of that emotion than asceded to the will to live. It isn't fun, it sucks and it takes a LOT of help to avoid doing it again or simply curling up in a ball that never opens up. For nearly a year after I experienced my first nervous breakdown (right after my first suicide attempt) my only human interactions that weren't a neccessity for school were with my parents and my psych.

Why am I sharing this? Because as dumb as it might sound I simply hate it when peolpe talk about suicide as "god is that so dumb, they are idiots anyway," stuff. No matter what you may have heard the real story is undoubtably much different and far more complex. I talk about my experience so openly because its one of my ways of coping, I know there are those out there who think about suicide every now and then...I want them to know that it isn't a way out, staring at the grim reaper is not an experience you want to find yourself going through and if you think you are coming close seek help because there is ALWAYS someone who will help.

Wilkins, as another who's tried to kill himself, I salute you for your toughness, and my condolences on how tough life can be.

Most people are naturally curious about what, if anything, happens to them when they die. Personally, I dont have a problem with people killing themselves if they don't want t o live anymore, whatever the reason. Hope the kid who succeeded is having a good time, and I hope the kid who failed didn't permentantly damage himself, no sense having his life fucked up if he choses to stick around.

Except in this case, it is dumb. These people weren't trying to kill themselves because they were depressed, they were trying to kill themselves out of curiosity. This is extremely stupid because they wouldn't be alive to care once they found out. Many ask "what's the harm in just letting people believe what they want?" well THIS IS IT! They wouldn't have killed themselves if they didn't believe in an afterlife. In this case I AM making an argument against mainstream religion: flame me for it if you want, but this is proof that religion causes harm.
