Bill could jail hackers for life
Nov. 13 — A last-minute addition to a proposal for a Department of Homeland Security bill would punish malicious computer hackers with life in prison. The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday evening voted 299 to 121 to approve the bill, which would reshape large portions of the federal bureaucracy into a new department combining parts of 22 existing federal agencies, including the Secret Service, the Coast Guard, and the FBI’s National Infrastructure Protection Center.

Thats one of the worst Slippery slope Fallices and its easly disproven by simple standereds
Crimanals TODAY are comminting far to many crimes and far to fast, if we were TODAY to go to a Oppresive Dicatorship we simply would not have the room or people to toss everyone in Jail, Of course we COULD be having people shot but not even in China can you be shot for Hacking(Unless you Hack the Goverment computers)

I would be wary of approving a bill whose wording we haven't seen. A lot of times, bills like that are advertised as promoting something which sounds good, but they quietly "piggy-back" a whole lot of really objectionable shit onto it. A lot of these things are actually legislative Trojan horses.

The hacking part was a "last-minute addition". What else was on the bill?

Life sentense? Quite a few murders don't get life setences. Manslaughter doesn't get a life sentense.

Detterance GAT, Mansualter is non-delbrate, Hacking is quite delbrate, ALWAYS premeditated and pretty damaging
At the bottom of the aritcule it lists what is on the CSEA
Promise life terms for computer intrusions that “recklessly” put others’ lives at risk. A committee report accompanying the legislation predicts: “A terrorist or criminal cyberattack could further harm our economy and critical infrastructure. It is imperative that the penalties and law enforcement capabilities are adequate to prevent and deter such attacks.”
Permit limited surveillance without a court order when there is an “ongoing attack” on an Internet-connected computer or “an immediate threat to a national security interest.” That kind of surveillance would, however, be limited to obtaining a suspect’s telephone number, IP address, URLs or e-mail header information—not the contents of online communications or telephone calls. Under federal law, such taps can take place when there’s a threat of “serious bodily injury to any person” or activity involving organized crime.
Change current law, which says it’s illegal for an Internet provider to “knowingly divulge” what users do except in some specific circumstances, such as when it’s troubleshooting glitches, receiving a court order or tipping off police that a crime is in progress. CSEA expands that list to include when “an emergency involving danger of death or serious physical injury to any person requires disclosure of the information without delay.”
Specify that an existing ban on the “advertisement” of any device that is used primarily for surreptitious electronic surveillance applies to online ads. The prohibition now covers only a “newspaper, magazine, handbill or other publication.”

Theres probably stuff on the bill I would object to, which I really don't know, since I haven't read it. These things are worded carefully. Damn I hate politicians. I mean the term 'hacking' can be expanded to reverse engineering, for example. I'm wary of the homeland security bill also. Does it have anything that might infringe on our rights?

Biggest US government reorganization in history, we'll maybe not history but almost certainly in the last 50 years. This is the bill that would place 170,000 Federal Employs from about a dozen agencies under a new Homeland security agency.

With the exact same stuff he had before. Only know they can actually use it was a degree of efficiency. Horrors.
I'd be more concern if I was in the UK right now. With the near total erosion of trial rights in that country, the governments much tighter press controls and now the plans for the mass installation of face recognition technology and even the serious though quickly defeated proposal to place an ID microchip in every citizen I think they have more to worry about.

True enough. China is much worse than the US. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be upset at what they're doing in the US right now.
This is a variation upon the "I was upset at having no shoes until I saw a man with no feet" story. It's true that it's worse to have no feet than no shoes, but at the same time, I want to have a fucking pair of shoes.
