Remember though, once you get above 1 inch, caliber no long is a measurement of bore diameter but rather barrel length relative to the bore. Thus a 12 inch 30cal gun would have a 30 foot long barrel.

Also there are exceptions, for example a .38 bullet is actually .357 inches.
And a .357 is also .357 inches.
