Ok, everyone, four questions, referring to pen and paper RPGs(Or Computer RPGs because I have a strong urge to rant about AO-Bean).

1. In your opinion, what's the best role playing game out there?
2. Why is [x] the best game out there?
3. Conversively, what's the worst role playing game out there?
4. Why is [x] so sucky?

NB. I'd like to ask any mod to soundly trounce Graeme if he tries any of his pathetic "merits are arbitrary" thread hijacking BS. Thank you.

Damn, you're right. I refer to pen and paper RPGs. Now updating the question to reflect this.

I was rathre partial to Deadlands.

Cowboys, Indians, and Zombies. Yes.

Plus the magic system is frankly ace. (spell power is determined by a poker hand, eg- Psychokinesis, a pair is like a medium strength punch, a royal flush is like being hit by a freight train) Also, Jokers make things go so horribly horribly wrong (in proportion to the rest of the hand)

3. Anarchy Online!

4.Customer Base? Who's That? What? X Class is Weak? Lets NERF IT TO DEATH

God...

Seriously

As the game started
NT, Enfocers and Traders where Godly, Shotguns where King

They nerfed the NT first, Nerfed him into OBIVION
Enfocers stayed the same(How can you fuck up somthing whos sole job is to take damage?)

Traders?

Their Weapon(Shotgun)=Useless now, Better off with a Cap gun then a Shotgun

Thier skills? Completly gone, EVERYTHING, they are the handy man class except everything you do kills you(Heals? Hurts them and heals others, except they now KILL you to heal others, or therabouts)

Soooooooooooo many mistakes and a Story Deparment that made the Drunken Sandwich writing Hobos of Enterpirse looking like Stravo

I fucking Kid you Not the Plot is that bad, Lag. Lag up the ass too it never went away and the bugs, The never ending bugs
Daiktana had less bugs....

1. Planescape: Torment
2. Because of the great storyline, characters and music
3. FF8
4. I got bored of it very soon.

To restate the question: This is about pen and paper Role Playing Games, people. Clarification: they're not played on a computer.

D&D third edition
The rules are flexible enough that you can have the exact character you want, and it is easy for DMs to create super
villians

I havnet really played anything else. Which is why I am only the DM when it comes to D&D, I have all 2nd edition books though and would be a rather formidible Dm there as well.

Bout time I answer my own questions.

1. Eon.
2. Because it's got such an elegant rules core that allows you to do damn near anything with it, yet gives you complexity unmatched by just about any game out there. The world is well-crafted, rich, and many-faceted... mostly, anyway.
3. d20 Star Wars
4. The rules core is sucky-sucky, an ironclad monstrosity that is optimized for one thing and one thing only: number-shuffling combat without a shred of variation. The character classes provide extreme confinement and the prestige classes allow one to switch them in favour of stereotypes. Add to that example characters that do not work, exp tables that lets one level up every time you sneeze, and a damage model beyond redemption. Shake and stir, serve with faulty research.

Hmmm... Call of Cthulhu or Amber Diceless.
2. Why is [x] the best game out there?
CoC - nice relatively simple system and with a decent GM it is a brilliant scarefest.

Amber Diceless - Simplicity in terms of system. Unbelievably complex in gameplay. Beautiful game, brilliant setting. Highly mutable system.
3. Conversively, what's the worst role playing game out there?
DnD 3rd Ed.
4. Why is [x] so sucky?
WotC. Crappified new system. Heil 1st Ed!

Honorable mention for Best AND Worst Game:

Macho Women With Guns.

Why?

Just look at the name, you shouldn't have to go further.

Best: GURPS

Why: Seems to be best balance between simple and complex, plus it's flexible with regards to time period/attributes of the world you set it in.

Worst: Rifts

Why: Personally didn't care for the entire concept of the game. Character creation way too drawn out and complicated.

GURPS? A Steve Jackson game? I spit on that system. Get a real RPG you fairy!

And Rifts was cool. Half the fun of it WAS in character creation. Making the most crazy arse guys in existance

Best: West End Games Star Wars RPG.

Why: Extremely moddable, easily updatable, with the only failing point being starship combat with anything bigger than a medium freighter. Handles Jedi very well.

Worst: GURPS(Gurps setting)

Why: Although I like using GURPs in many settings, the main setting for it is so patently ridiculous I can't stand it. The most terrifying thing there is is an eyeball on the road, because it's taken so many flaws it is just an eyeball.... WITH KILL-O-ZAP RAYS OF HADOKEN!

True, system sucks, but the supplements are usually top-notch.

Other than that, think twice before employing certain perjoratives... please.

Yeah yeah. Its just I have a thing against GURPS, it goes back to a highly moronic GM and a REALLY REALLY bad custom setting.

I kid you not there is nothing even remotly apporching Anarchy-Online in terribleness

Shall I detail you?

Any charater class that is good shall be made shitty within six months
All Class that just barley get by will get small token gifts or massive useless changes that don't affect anything...

If there is a great idea
We will ignore it
If there is a terrible one
We will implent it in a week

Player VS Player is always more important than Player VS Monster

If you whine loud enough we will do it, no matter how rediculious it is, however it can't be a good thing, only bad things we shall do for you

If there is a good item, we will nerf them away, even those that have them

The Economey? Makes 1987 Russia look perfect(Dupe bugs, Infinte Money bugs, People who have TRILLIONS of Credits are Comenplace, Considering MILLIONS are hard to get leagly, these people fuck it up so bad its not even funny)

Lag? We not only Like it.. WE PRODUCE IT! We aim for an avarage ping of 300 for people who have T-3 Lines(T-3 300 ping get it!? yuk yuk  )

If it is fixed
We will break it

If its broke, We will ignore it

And finaly...
When it comes to Bugs, Be they Security Flaws or Random Crashs

We make Windows 95 look good

-That is Anarchy-Online

I kid you not it was THAT bad a game....

Personally, I like any Wheel of Time RPGs, and am supposedly involved in a SM RPG...but most if those are dead. I am hoping that the VtM game is gonna be really good.

Best RPG: Heavy Gear

Reason: Fairly simple yet comprehensive character creation setting, ability to combine an RPG and a tactical wargame, ability to play the entire game with just 4d6 and never have to roll a die more than once for an action, damage based on real-life stats (armor rating = square root of mm of armor).

Worst RPG: DnD3e

Reason: Bad rules system. Too many dice needed. Altered things which should not have been altered (spell names). Made many settings obsolete (Arabian Adventures, Birthright, Spelljammer...all the ones I played). Claimed to be an attempt to simplify, then promptly came out with more expansions than 2e. VERY complicated characters at moderate-high level. Too easy to min-max.
