#2 is handling divx encoded .avi video WAY better than the main system
main system's choppy, #2 with a 600mhz SLOWER proc, and half the ram is running it smooth as ice!
specs on the machines:
primary:
proc: AMD Athlon T-bird 1100
ram: 640MB
vid: 64mb GeForce2 GTS/Pro
OS: Windows 2000 Pro, SP3 (13 months operational)
known hardware faults: none
configuration: standard/IDE
clockspeed: 1104mhz
number2:
proc: AMD Athlon-1 500mhz
ram: 384mb
vid: 64mb GeForce2 MX400
OS: Windows 2000 Pro, SP2 (3 months intermittant uptime)
known hardware faults: failing IDE controller, possible CPU damage.
configuration: nonstandard, IDE/SCSI hybrid system. IDE boot drive/cd-rom, SCSI storage due to faulty IDE controller. SCSI configuration is 40MB/s LVD/SE, IDE configuration is ATA-66.
clockspeed: 508mhz
btw, number 2 is the one running the vid way better. both are running pc-133 ram btw.

It is also a possibility that the codex's you have on nr 2 is way better..
I had that problem once. Used a week trying just about anything I could think of getting my new computer to play vids as good as my old one.
In the end it was as simple as going to the net and dowloading a heapload of nw codex..

What version of the DivX coded is on both machines? Latest version I saw on the DivX website is 5.0.2. (Then again, I haven't been there in a while) Have you run Ad-Aware on the 1.1GHz box? Killed any un-necessary services?

ran virus scan, adaware, the works, nothing.
the 1.1 system is clean.
using divx 5.02 codec
#2 has no codec installed.

A) What mainboards do these systems have?
B) I've heard some not-so-nice things about Win2K SP3.
C) What video drivers do you have installed on the two machines.

vid drivers: nvidia detonatorXP 30.82, so far the best of these drivers.
mainboards:
primary: AMD mfg mobo, custom for gateway, it's a solid board btw.
#2: ASUS K7V with a shot IDE controller.

You never answered my last question though. Did you kill any un-necessary services?

yes. if it wasn't necessary for operation it was nuked on the main system for diagnostic purposes. on #2 it was straight from boot, no changes to the running programs.
