The 'spiritual' successor to the X-COM series. I've been following its development ever since the beginning of this year.

I really liked Terror From The Deep. The underwater scenarios were so much creepier than the farms from the first game.

Nothing beats the origninal X-com for me. I remember one of my sergants ran out of rifle ammo and pulled out his pistol. He killed 3 purple floaters with one clip. 2 were point blank shots inside a barn, the other one was across the street from the barn as my guy ran for his life.

You might have trouble getting it to work in Windows. There is a Windows revision floating around the net if I recall correctly. I belive it its public domain now, but dont hold me to that.
I remember first learning about X-com because the demo came with an issue of Computer Gaming World. Its the first demo I ever remember playing, so it was a new concept then. Nothing beats the terror of a night mission.

Unless it's a night city mission, those bastards can hide EVERYWHERE, and thee worst part is when a Chryssalid comes out of nowhere and murders your best men...

Thats when you scream in your chair. "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!" "AAAAAAH"
If a game can make you do that, then you got your money's worth!

Then you should play AvP 1 as humans. The first time your guy gets face-hugged you will strat swearing like mad. It's like stubbing your toe into a wall.

Playing Undying the other day, I flick-turned and suddenly had a skeletons face filling my monitor and screeeeeeaming at me. Both me and my friend who was watching me play cleared 1 foot above our seats. The skeleton then thwacked me with a staff and ate my heart.

Ha! Night missions. Nothing randomly firing incendiary rounds into wheatfields can't fix.

My one really big beef with the original X-com was that my troops marksmenship in the beginning was really bad. I mean they had trouble sometimes hitting the side of a building! I thought these were suppose to be "elite" troopers??
Aside, from a few other minor issues, X-com remains one of my all time favorites. I liked using grenades alot in the beggining when you are up against the Sectoids. Its fun to get a breaching team of 3 guys to open the front door of the smaller UFO's and have one of them toss in a grenade with a zero second fuse. The door shuts, BOOOM, **alien screams **.

Coolness...a heir to X-Com
And yeah for some reason supposed 'elite' have trouble hitting the broad side of planet with their accuracy rating.

Yeee-hawww!!! This is what a game should aspire to be!
Hope it'll be possible to play in real-time, too, though. That's the only beef I had with the (otherwise awesome) original game.

Suprise, suprise:
UFO-AM site wrote:You should preferably give orders while the game is paused, to avoid the frantic rush of a real time system. While paused, you can give your troops very detailed orders, taking as much time as you like. Once you are finished, you simply tell the game to start.
So, in other words...it'll be like their Original War, or Baldur's Gate for that matter.
Fine with me, as long as those elite troops are going to be at least average at the beginning

Real Time gameplay fucked up Starfleet Battles, AKA the
Starfleet Command game series. And we already have
RTS XCOM, it's called XCOM APOCALYPSE.

Which was shit ... luckily you could play in turn-based mode; which saved the game for me I thought it was quite fun, but not nearly as fun as its predecessors
FUCK TERROR FROM THE DEEP WAS SO MUCH HARDER!!!!!
You'll notice Shep that the combat system has *passing* similarity to Combat Mission- check it out.

Actually, XCOM Apocalypse was useful in RTS for handling those boring
missions where you had to simply whack the aliens with your
uber agent squad to keep your point score high and your funding
score high. It sped up the game a lot in the middle to late game during
the now-routine missions.

Apocalypse was fucked up. Why the hell did they had to place those shitty windows-like control panels everywhere? And who the hell designed Apocalypse's vehicles???
Anyways, I don't think paused real-time will be that bad. At least you'll get proper squad movement capability.

It was released in an issue of Computer Gaming World on one of their free cd's for winblowze.
And yes, I do have a copy...

I had no problems with the Starfleet Command real time play. All you have to do is alter the time slower...

PC Gamer released a CD with X-com on it too. Ive got that one.
Did anyone ever use the High Explosive in X-Com UFO Defense? I think I tried it once and never used it again.
I played X-Com again this summer and I made use of the proximity grenades, mostly against Sectoids and the big orange furry guys. I never used them when the game initially came out.
