i will commence reloading of the OS on my primary machine, for the first time in over 13 months.
it's a pre-emptive reload actually, there's been just a small handful of minor glitches in the last 6 weeks or so, so i figured i'd reload to keep my good record on this comp.
backups were completed 20 minutes ago and now i'm just waiting for the reinstallation files cd to finish burning.

well the burn's done.
"Commence primary ignition!"
see y'all flipside!

Windows 2000 Pro, the best OS ever. running it on 3 of 4 network systems, no problems. btw, it is a gaming network and still want to choke whoever said that 2K sucks for gaming, cause it doesn't, it's better than win98SE for performance on gaming, and so far only one game doesn't work, warcraft2, and that's a mouse driver issue.Captain Lennox wrote:Wht OS you use?

Bob, if you can't tell the Diffrence between Windows Millenium and Windows 2k you should not be operating a computer my friend!
Millenium=1000 in number terms.. also its shitty
2000=2000
Even my Grandmother who knows twice as much about Toasters(Bread goes in here, push the level bread comes out toasted) as she does about Computers knew the diffrence between Windows ME and Windows 2k

It does not support Hardware acceleration meaning an increably strain on the CPU even when idle, Infact Typical CPU utilziation is two MAGINTUDES higher than any other OS inculding Windows 3.1 or Windows XP, or Mandrake Linux with all the bells and whitles on
Infact to compare with how much the CPU is being used
In Windows 98 SE or Normal
Open up 9 Browser Windows Plus Windows Media Player and a Game of Solitair and you = OS X's CPU utlization(Assuming your not using a P1 or 2 that is)
Windows 2k same as above but open up 19 instead of nine
Linux, Your gonna be hard pressed to duplicate it... hmm I think 21 Star Office Docements open will do it along with four sessions of Mozilla

Nonono, Windows ME is the last Win 9x OS produced by Microsoft. Windows 2000 is based on the NT kernel (It's actually NT 5.0, just like Windows XP is NT 5.1)Captain Lennox wrote:Ah, otherwise known as Me? I'm not sure unless this another, rarer OS. That sounds about right. Windows 9x and Win2k consume about the same number of resources. However, Win2k has a lot or overhead in terms of background system processes. And yes, OS X system utilization is really high. You won't find me crossing over to the Macintosh side anytime soon.Mr Bean wrote:Ah ha I think notDefintion: The greatest kick @ss uber OS ever made by mortal hands.

Odd, I haven't had too many problems with WinME. I routinely get week-long uptimes out of it (and even as I type this, I am perfectly aware that Win2K machines will remain up for weeks and months until the sysadmin has to restart the machine to apply the newest security patch.) Of course I've installed a process manager to get around that pesky Windows ME slowing down to a crawl after a few minutes of inactivity problem (it's caused by one of the background processes. Terminate the process and you're good to go.)Hyperion wrote:oh fuck no, this machine started with that piece of crap. windows 2000 (AKA NT5.0), it's windows NT.Captain Lennox wrote:Ah, otherwise known as Me? I will not go to XP unless they do something about that horrible pay-forever licensing scheme. But Win2k I will go to. In fact I have it running on my old P2 233 IBM Thinkpad (Win2K is great with laptops.)

i wish i could load it on my laptop, but it's a p120 with 48mb ram... i may try it at some point just for the hell of it but i'd put money on it that it'll run worse than that 8088 i loaded win98 on with a friend. (i am dead serious on that one too)
this install already got off to a bad start it's crawling with bugz... sound issues (it's acting like the audio codec in the #2 comp, a "discharge" time where the sound dies out when switching tracks or killing a proggie with sound, popping, cracking, nasty crap in the audio. and mouselag/jumping... no doubt a driver problem... other than that went smoothly.

seems to have produced a set of hardware that can run ME decently....

Whoop-de-fucking-doo. I'm sure that that makes up for the fact that it doesn't run at all on any other system.MKSheppard wrote:The Dell version of Win ME does actually work.....I'm using it now.....DellCaptain Lennox wrote: Ah, otherwise known as Me? But it is nowhere near good enough to justify the absolutely hideous hardware costs for high-end Apple computers.
ME is hideous though. My mother wanted ME on her computer that I had built her. Of course, this was because my dumbass friend had told her it was great. Later at a LAN party he said "Windows ME and 2000 are virtually indistinguishable, even to the experts" and we all knew then never to trust his advice again.
But it was too late for my mother, and her ME install is now nearly 19 months old. I swear that thing gets a little slower and a little less stable with every bootup. I'm scared to death that one day that damn OS is going to meltdown and I'll have to go in and fix it for her... and she'll be stressed out and bitchy and stressing me out... ick.
And of course the dumbass who does tech support at her workplace fucked up when installing Windows 2000, so now she doesn't trust W2K...
Guess I'll have to get her XP when her computer crashes and burns.

BTW I use Win 2K Pro... Note to Win2K users: STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM WILDTANGENT! Trust me... I caught it from some jjackass installing random programs on my computer, and when I removed it it tried to kill my OS! It's still deeply scarred and constantly needing reboots unlike normal Win2K installs...
