Another situation along the WWII era,
it took 450 aircraft to sink the Yamato, (disgusting number)
So lets cut that number in half,
An assortment of allied fighters, bombers and torpedo planes are on their way towards a modern naval cruiser (doesn't matter which one) but NO aircraft carriers,
Will that modern cruiser or destroyer survive? and if so, which one,
The fighters are 200 km from the modern ship, and closing.

A CG 47 Ticonderoga-class AEGIS Cruiser will OWNNNN them. SM-2MR SAMs will plink 60 of them easily (there's only 60 missiles aboard)
But if there's 450 aircraft ... erm ... hmm.
But the Yamato was a battleship so really a comparison to a modern cruiser is wrong.

A modern ship would devastate the incoming attack force. But 225 planes is more planes than missiles. The cruisers cannons and phalanx's would cut down that number even more, plus any troops topside with Stingers and manning 25 mm.
But I bet at least 10 would make it through if not more, depending on the speed and type of aircraft. I would assume a torpedo bomber of that age would not be able to score any hits, but a straffing fighter or dive bomber would be able to do damage.

Only one warship could take such a massive attack, the Russian carrier Kuznetsov. Ammunition considerations preclude any other vessel from winning. We would however be lucking at a fuck load of down planes in any case.
It didn't take 450 aircraft to Sink Yamato. 395 missions got flown aginst her group, sinking Yamato, five destoryers and a light cruiser.
She is the classic case of overkill. A strike group half that size would have proved fatel, but the pilots kept attacking for as long as they had bombs and torpedos and arrived in a strady stream.
Hell even when she rolled over and blew up aircraft where still making runs. Just becuase she took eleven torpedos and twenty odd bombs doesnt mean thats what it took to sink her. She was done for at around 7 and 12.
