Space: Above and Beyond - The rumors are over!
Posted by Gord Lacey
6/12/2005
You've heard the rumors that Space: Above and Beyond will be coming to DVD, and... well... it's not here. Good news though; it is coming, and it's coming very soon - this summer.
Space: Above and Beyond is a title that Best Buy will have an exclusive on for a period of time, much like Tru Calling: Season 2 (which has vanished from the BB website for an unknown reason), and some titles from other studios. After this exclusive period ends we'll see it at for sale at other retailers, so if you don't have a Best Buy in your area then don't panic, you'll get the set. Since this title is an exclusive, information may be difficult to obtain until it's announced for sale elsewhere, but we'll do some digging and report whatever we find.
We've been teased by rumors for years, but this is finally happening!

It's about fucking time someone decided to release it on DVD. I'm surprised it wasn't done sooner.

Sweet. I've been waiting for this show to come out on DVD for ages. It's about time someone decided to throw a couple of bucks into it as an investment.

Is it possible that with all of these prematurely cancelled shows coming out on DVD and selling well (I presume) that maybe the people behind programing at the networks might start getting an inkling of a clue?
If Serenity does well I hope someone's ass is over the fire but I'm betting that instead nothing will happen and everyone will pat themselves on the back for the premature cancelling being the reason why the movie even got made in the first place.
It seems like Fox has long been one of the worst about attempting genre projects and then shit canning them when they don't curbstomp the mainstream shows on more established networks that aren't preempting shows constantly so they can sell football or baseball, or some other sport.
IIRC S:AAB was constantly getting preempted, and if it's getting preempted on Mountain time it was probably getting royally screwed on Eastern time.

I've liked the books and seen a pair of episodes, is this worth trying to pick up on DVD?

It's a good show but you'll have to mentally get past the part where they use the same group of officers as fighter pilots and ground forces.
Other than that it's pretty cool. Good characters, cool tech. The only thing is you might get into it and then get really pissed off that there isn't anymore. That's kind of what happens to me ever time I think of the last episode and some of the parts of the show that I really liked.
I'm not sure how much they plan on charging for the set. I don't know that I'd be willing to pay big bucks for it but something in the $40-45 US range would easilly be worth it.

My favorite scene in the entire series was McQueen's rant at the Chaplan before he sortied out to kill Chiggy Von Richtofen.

S:AAB rocked. Unfortunately, I don't know if I can put myself through the pain of getting it on DVD. There was no satisfactory conclusion to the show.

Everone died, I call that conclusion.
But I know what you mean, when the last episode aired I went infohunting on the net and was stunned to learn that it was the last episode.
I did feel cheated.

It had a dark and gritty atmosphere for a tv show. So I liked it

Did they? I know the one guy was toast for sure, and the two girls were spinning out of control into a planet's atmosphere, but I don't think they all died.

Nathan West and and Cooper Hawks survived. IIRC McQueen was badly injured by the Chig ambassador.

- Colonel. Colonel! Colonel McQueen! Do you need to make peace with your maker.
- My maker was some geek in a lab coat with an eyedropper and a petri dish. What do I need to make peace with him for?
- In times of war we must all make peace with our maker.
- Well, I don't think our maker wants to hear from me right now. Because he knows I'm going to go out in this plane and I'm going to remove one of His creations from His universe. And when I get back, I'm going to drink a bottle of scotch as if it was Chiggy Von Richtofen's blood and celebrate his death.
- Amen.
Angriest Angel indeed.
Might consider picking this up. Does it have any extras? Like, say, the outline of the cancelled second season and it´s accompanying artworks?

Bootleg DVD's have been out for years, but I'll buy this, this show was worth it, even if the end was a trauma wound I'll never recover from ...
Stofsk thanks for remembering man.
Ace Pace yes it is worth it. It is a Sci-Fi show that focused on
characters rather than plot devices, it was masterfull in that.
Faram I remember when the first season finished, I rang up Channel 7 that was showing it wondering if they had more, I was told they didn't. Then I asked if they would re-run it, I was told they wouldn't, then I swore and they hung up!

Do we have a firm release date? I've been waiting for this DVD set for years. A truly awesome show with some great scenes and characters.

I bought copies from a guy in England who had the review tapes. He sold them through a fan site and I forked over $150.00 for the set. They were burned DVDs but of good quality, no commericals, and in sequence. I never regretted my decision even though there were no additional features, scene select, etc-- just straight no-frills recording.
That said, I will keep that set and buy the DVDs when they come out 'cause I think that show was worth it. It was cool and it was well done, and the characters (always my most important consideration) were well done and had individual depth.
Take my opinion with a grain of salt if you wish, but this will give an idea to some who are curious just how well-regarded this show was.

Oh dear sweet merciful god!
The mere idea makes my eyes quiver in anticipation.
