I'm aware of that. Lord of the Flies does the same thing, except that everything can be read on numerous levels.

My favorite is also from LotF, but it is actually the island itself. It stands in for the Garden of Eden, but it also comes to represent nature, false security, the human mood, the provider, women (along with numerous other symbols from the book, including the aforementioned conch), hidden danger, and (of course) the Beast and the Lord of the Flies, and (also of course) through them God and man.

Doesn't it also represent the Earth in general?

Kind of but not really. It's much more closely connected with the Garden of Eden, on most of its levels, which precludes its use as a symbol for our Earth. I would say it represents nature in general on all levels of the book.
