First of all, your avatar frightens me.
Second I have no idea. I'd like to know myself. I usually don't go for the high definition stuff though. I'm still too used to the crap wagon picture tube box I have. LoL!

Plasma and HDTV have nothing to do with each other at all. Let me try to explain here...
There are, more or less, two types of televisions today: CRT, or cathode ray tube, televisions which are the big, bulky mother fuckers. Then you have plasma TVs, the flat ones that you can hang on a wall if you want.
Now, HDTV is a new digital television standard that the FCC wants everyone to switch to in the near future. There are two separate digital types: SDTV and HDTV. Both are digital, but SD is "standard", the digital equivalent to analog NTSC (which is what most TVs are nowadays).
Now, when you hear something about a TV which is HDTV-ready, all that means is that it has the capability to take a direct HDTV feed from the cable system and display it since it already has a digital display device. Otherwise you'll need a set-top box converter for older TVs.
EDIT: I'd probably like a Plasma TV that was HDTV-ready, but then again I'm a technophile Plasma TVs look a hell of a lot better, though...at times. I'll stick with my old CRT for now since it's a little more reliable.

I think I get what your saying. Is the flat plasma TVs in a way like a quartz watch. Allowing it to be flat.
HDTV basically allows it to recieve digital input? I'm not sure if I'm being clear on the question, I'm not much of techie.

Pretty much. The current broadcast standards are all analog: PAL, NTSC, SECAM, etc. However, new digital standards are being developed swiftly and getting cheaper and cheaper. This is HDTV and SDTV. The bandwidth from a single HDTV channel can fit four SDTV channels, IIRC. Phong, you have any more info on HD?

Shit, he'll see the price tags on one of those mother fuckers and fall the hell out. Shit might be different for some of you city folk in Cali and the Big Apple, but as far as I'm concerened here in Alabama, 7k is not a good deal on a TV. No matter how fucking good the picture quality is supposed to be.

Agreed there. Plasma TVs are horrid in the price department. I say go with a CRT, and make sure it has lots of little ports and jacks in the backDG_Cal_Wright wrote:Shit, he'll see the price tags on one of those mother fuckers and fall the hell out. Here's some shit man. My cousing went to buy a standard TV. I think it was an RCA brand. It was a bad ass 32". They had one that was like 329. and the other was fucking 389. both were god damned identical. the only difference. the higher priced one had a fucking XBox log on the front and some damn hook up specially designed for that damn console. shit, it aint worh 60 extra bucks for that. especially with niether of us having a damn XBox. That was totally off topic, and I am sorry for hijacking the thread like a god damned taliban towel head.
Plasma TVs are bad ass, but cost to god damned much. for what. it's flat. LIke I said, cali and new york I know they need space savers and ppl get paid up there, but still. there's really no market around were i live for em.

People in Cali choke on the price of a plasma TV too. Only someone with serious extra cash can buy one of those.Shit, he'll see the price tags on one of those mother fuckers and fall the hell out. I fretted over spending 700 on my TV, but its pretty cool. Flat screen, vcr and dvd built in.

Even though it saves on extra jacks and hook ups for a vcr/dvd and other shit that's built in, I don't really like that idea. if the vcr fucks up, you have to take the whole damn thing in. likewise with the dvd or even the tv itself. where as with seperate entities if one goes down you just get it fixed or what not.

Normally I would agree, when I worked at Circuit City I saw the combos come back into service, but Im "assuming" they are more reliable now.Even though it saves on extra jacks and hook ups for a vcr/dvd and other shit that's built in, I don't really like that idea. if the vcr fucks up, you have to take the whole damn thing in. likewise with the dvd or even the tv itself. where as with seperate entities if one goes down you just get it fixed or what not.
Im not too concerned about the VCR , Ive used it once in 5 months.

Same here, I have a VCR and hardly ever fucking use it, but even with reliability in tact it's just something that would seem more convenient in the event of.

Re: Plasma vs. HDTV
What Dalton said. HDTV is a audio/video standard for TV. A plasma TV is a very cool gadget you could use to display HDTV if it was equipped for it.Lord Poe wrote:WTF is the difference between Plasma TVs, and HDTVs? Andwhich one is the best?
As an interesting sidebar, the FCC has mandated that everybody go to digital TV signals by 2006. Granted this only impacts those who rely on off-air signals for their TV (i.e. bunny ears atop the TV set.)
Another interesting note, the terrorist attacks of 9/11 had a direct affect on people watching TV with antennas. The father of a friend of mine finally made the switch to cable after 9/11. When the WTC came down, the large TV broadcast antennas atop it went down too, and with them, a lot of TV and radio signals to places like NJ.

I didn't even know about that. The broadcast signals coming from the WTC. I really didn't think people still used TVs like that. Well, I know the boondocks around here prolly have ppl like that, but still.

It's like the CN tower here in Toronto, it's main function is for broadcasting. Doesn't hurt that after the Russians finished building their tower in Moscow we added a hundred or so feet to the ariel up top to beat them in height.

Well of course. It's like guys going around saying, 'Look I have a bigger dick than you'. Like it truly amounts to anything in the long run, you bastards. It just seems like they'd cut that out to keep things more secure. However they could have ways to scramble the signal.
