Signs of Kristinmas

Post by Zaia »

Ok, so maybe most people celebrate Christmas or something vaguely similar (Kristinmas is a lesser holiday that takes place on Dec. 26th; it's the celebration of me--so mark your calendars!! ), but the point of the thread remains the same:

What things signal to you that Christmastime is here? Xmas music in the malls? Lights on houses? Something special your mom bakes? Egg nog being carried in the grocery store?

No, I didn't say the celebration of my birth was then. It's just the celebration of me. I was actually born in March.

Years ago, I kept asking people what Boxing Day was for, and no one could tell me, so I decided I'd make my own holiday, and my friends and family have been celebrating it ever since! :D

And here I thought you were going to make a comment about my ego.  :D

Anyway, the one thing that makes me feel the thrill of Christmastime is seeing those places that sell live Christmas trees. They almost all look the same, I think. A plot of land with tall, wooden poles loosely fencing in the sales area, with strings of large white lights draped from one pole to the other. At some of these places, there are wreaths or red ribbon on the wooden stakes. For some reason, that to me brings all the beautiful feelings associated with Christmas rushing to mind. Mmmm, I love that.

Ok, now that I've waxed poetic, I think I'll head off to bed. 'Night, all!

At Christmas time, people on all of the newsgroups post threads titled "Merry Christmas". That's a pretty clear sign on the season.

Other than that, I usually set up some decorations and a light up, fiber optic tree.
Then I go on a short shopping spree.
Other than that, nothing.

When every single radio station starts playing nothing but Christmas music, it's maddening, I can only listen to so "Rudolph the rednose Reindeer" so many times in one day before I lose my sanity. I have developed a remedy for this though, in the last few years my CD collection has grown to the point where I don't listen to the radio anymore. Thus I won't even know when Xmas is this year without looking at my calendar. I also can't remember the last time I watched TV for something other than weather reports so I have the TV Christmas specials taken care of as well.

They never play the good stuff here, I'm condemmed to hearing the same 5-10 Xmas songs over and over again every day. It's like this for all of December, freakin' Xmas music everywhere, it's sickening I tell you. Now if they played "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" and other such songs I would be a bit happier. I'll have to go write a song about Santa having an anal sex orgy with the elves and get that played on the radio.

When the special 'seasonal' aisle in Tescos is full of wrapping paper. Oh hang on, that's October.

When I can't go shopping for Slade and Wham! (Bloody Wham!), migraine-inducing twinkly lights are everywhere, and my Scroogeous Boyf gets tetchy.

December 1st. I actually noticed all of those on the same day this year.

Oh yes - and Christmas is when i get scared about deadlines (1 term down and haven't started my dissertation)

Anyway, back on topic.

I was going to mention that my employers saw fit to give me Kristinmas day off but since it's not really her birthday.... :)

It's funny. I'm working December 24,25, 27, & 28th. I couldn't figure out why my management would give me the 26th off (I am working all the major holidays this fall/winter) but then the comment about Boxing Day got me thinking. It's not really something we generally do in the US but maybe, knowing how strange I am, my managers decided not to push their luck and gave me Boxing Day off? :D

Either that or they didn't want to pay me time and a half for working Kristinmas Day. :D

Bob Rivers is guy behind a lot of the cool twisted Christmas songs. His latest album is called White Trash Christmas and it has that Little Hooters Girl song on it. Amazon has some sample clips from this album as well as his others.

He's the guy who did Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, Jingle Hells Bells, Santa Clause (Like Iron Man), Walkin' Round in Women's Underwear and a bunch of others. He's very good a parodies.

That's entirely possible. It really is growing in terms of world-wide acceptance, you know... :P :D

If you celebrate anything on the 26th...all the better, I need a day off from the day off.

And as for signs...screams and wails and complaining when looking at Bank Accounts.

I alway's perfered Solstice, on Christmas, they expect you to go to church. Durring Solstice or Yule, you just celebrate and drink mead. :D , ale :D , and beer :D :D .
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

It was mostly a joke, you can count on one hand the amount of times I have entered a church(and a couple of different denominations at that).

When I go home and see that my mother has taken over the dining room with presents for the family and won't let anyone enter for fear of seeing their gift, that is when I know it is Christmas.
Signs of Kristinmas? Well, when people start saying "Be nicer to each other, that is how Kristin would want us to be"

Yah, exactly. I've got Kristinmas keychains that read 'WWKD?'

Hmm, perhaps I should discuss the paganistic roots this holiday has--roots that stretch all the way back to the mid-nineties! Hmm, some discussion of the hedonistic nature of the holiday and how to celebrate appropriately (much feasting and orgies) might bring some of you around...
