M1a2 wins
Challenger 2 vs. Leopard 2
Leopard 2 win (it is based on the M1A1)
Merkava vs T-90 or M1A2
T-90 or M1A2 would win. Merkava is good but not that good.
How about
T34 vs M48 Patton
PRESSURE CANON!

M1A2
Leo2 Assuming a fairly recent version.
M1A2
T-34 vs. M48 is overwhelmingly in the M48's favor. That's why the Soviets started building T-54's back in 1947.

T-90 vs M1A2 all depends on the T-90s upgrade package, if its got AT-11s on board it can pop they Abrams before it even comes into range, but if it doesn't have any of the new upgrades it'll probably fall prey to the Abrams, the 125mm gun just can't cut it over long range.
Challenger 2 has better armor than Leopard 2 (bolts-ons arent as effective as built on Chobam) and it has a better gun, Challenger 2 could beat an M1A1 aswell, its when you get an M1A2 vs Challenger 2 that the challenger couldn't cope.
Agree about the Merkava, armors not good enough. I've always though of Merkavas as super heavy IFVs.
M48 is far superior to T34 both in armament and fire control (hence range), don't know about armor though...

Actually the Merkava armor is insanely heavy. That why even the III out weights the M1A2 yet has about half the mobility.
LeoIIA6 has a big mobility advantage and about 200mm of RHA equivalent protection over the Challenger II.

Bah, I was thinking about the Marder not the Merkava, brain wasn't in gear..
Challenger 2 has the new Chobam armor as opposed to the simpler armor on the Leo upgrade kit (The bolt on nature of the Leo's armor makes it less effective too). C2 also has a better turret shape for deflecting KE. I guess in the end though its so close the crew and luck will be the deciding factor.

Bolt on armor works just fine, hell the current trend is to make all but the baseline RHA appliqué. Merk IV is a prime example of this and several other projects will have it as well. Anyway the improved A6 has idea shaping for deflecting APDS.Aaron Ash wrote:Bah, I was thinking about the Marder not the Merkava, brain wasn't in gear..

Mobility will be the deciding factor, Leo II has a signficant advantage in that respect.
