Hello all. I just found out today that a friend of mine is at the center of a hate campaign directed at him and his family. Somehow his email accounts were violated and this individual or individuals has been sending out false messages about my buddy. Is there anything that a person can do?
Many thanks.

Contact everyone on the address list the account had an inform them of what's happening for starters.

Change email accounts, (like SKimmer said) inform everyone, talk to the mail providers about him, get his address (RL address) then when you find him break his arms and legs to teach never to fuck with you again.

Yup. My buddy changed his email account already and has informed everyone on his list. I told him to contact his providers. When does it become a law enforcement issue? I'd say slander has to be punishable somehow.
I must say that I was shocked when I got the message. It was something completely out of character for my buddy so I thought something was up.
If it did happen to me I would be breaking some fucking legs.

Actually you're wrong. Slander is oral defamation. Libel is written.
The e-mail provider should be able to help.

The last time someone did that to me, I used his account to send porn to the whole school, teachers and admin included. I managed to get his login and password from the staff room(I get along well with the teachers and am usually sent inside for some errand or other.) He got a suspension when the account traces came in. BTW I only went this far because he was an annoying little shit who was stalking the girls in my class.

if i may ask what was the supposed cause of the hate campaign?
btw, i'd call the FBI as technically that was compromising an electronic communications system and hacking. being an ex hacker myself, i'm a bit familiar with the laws regarding this kind of shit.

See. Watching Spider-man 20 times does teach you something.

Also: round up as many of the offending emails as you can. Depending on the spoofing skills of the jerk in question, the IP headers (the source) might give you some clues as to who they are. Or at least, their ISP/general geographic location (using traceroute), which can help narrow things down.

How did your friend get his email compromised? Did they steal his password.
Have him make sure he is not a victim of something like NetBus which can send information home to the hacker. Even if he changes passwords, those keystrokes can be recorded.
If there is no monetary damage law enforcement will probably shrug its shoulders. The hackers ISP might be conviced to cancel his acount, assuming he has a valid one.

I don't know how it happened. Only that I got a strange message that was completely out of character.
