The Reason I've been gone 26+ Hours......
And No, it doesn't involve guns, dead bodies, or other unsavory
things....
Rather, it was defragging the main hard drive on this computer.
50% done in 26 hours(!)
Now, it may seem like a waste of time for you to defrag your HDD
every month or week, when it is only 5%, but trust me, it is MUCH
faster that way than letting your HDD go all the way up to 70-90%
fragmented.
Also, never, ever, let your computer go over a year without defragging
it.
This computer is MUCH MUCH more snappier than it was on Thursday....
So I guess moving those colored blocks around DID have some effect.

It's okay Shep, I noticed that you were gone for a while.

I usually recommend completely reinstalling a Windows machine after a year due to "windows rot". Mike does a good job explaining about it on his personal page. Ive been asked to defrag many machines that are over a year old. Boy it DOES take a while.
Im a little over zealous with defragging, I used to do it every Friday night, but now that I have a big HD once every 3-4 weeks is okay.

How big are your HDs?
Mine is only 40GBs but it takes me hours to defrag it. Must be all that Hentai.

I haven't defragged my 40GB harddrive ever. I guess I should get to it.

Actually I have 2 of them, giving me 80 GBs.
But yeah, Cyril, you should defrag yours.

I can't defrag mine any more. There's some sort of damaged sector on the hard drive that causes the scandisk to freeze when it runs in thorough mode. No thorough scandisk, no defrag.

If you can afford it buy a copy of Diskeeper. Its a good third party defrag utility and it is much better than the built in Windows 98 defragger. ( Im assuming thats what you are using )I can't defrag mine any more. There's some sort of damaged sector on the hard drive that causes the scandisk to freeze when it runs in thorough mode. Yeah, ME is the same too. 95/98/ME are notoriously bad for defragging. NT does not have one built in, so thats why I recommend a copy of Diskeeper.Win ME. Shoulda mentioned it above, but I didn't actually expect someone to have an answer for me.
Win2K comes with Diskeeper Lite built in.
Have you tried running scandisk with a boot floppy instead of Windows? You might be able to complete the full run, and mark the bad sector.

Odd. My one 40 Gig shouldn't seem to take that long, but the defrag kept restarting.

You guys are using Win9X/ME, I take it?
One of the big advantages of Win2K/XP's defragger is that it doesn't need to restart every time something is written to the filesystem. It'll just keep on going no matter what else the system is doing.
Win2K and XP also support the NTFS filesystem, which doesn't fragment at anywhere near the same rate as FAT--and it generally doesn't need to be scandisked after (rare) lockups either.
