KREIGSMARINEC.S.Strowbridge wrote:Cool, the Bismark is my favourite ship. I also like the fact that, AFAIK, the German Navy thought Hitler was a tit. The command staff didn't buy into the whole Aryan Nation bullshit.
Fight? Wait, you just wanna see the Hood explode. What time it plays CST? 7PM?Aaron Ash wrote:OMG, that should be a good film, specially if we get to see the errr... "big" fight between Bismarck and HMS Hood.
Not sure about the Kreigsmarine not liking Hitler though, Doenitz (sp?) was made the second Fuhrer of the Reich. And the Kreigsmarine was considered to be the most elite service especially the submarine arm, and when the Nazi's said "elite" they usually mean "fanatical" too.
As far as I know it is nothing more than the expedition to the wreck.Aaron Ash wrote:OMG, that should be a good film, specially if we get to see the errr... "big" fight between Bismarck and HMS Hood.
Only comparing those aspects leads to a utterly useless set of data. The Fact that they can rate Bismarck is highly makes even this limited comparison highly suspect. Her armor was poor in every respect, her firepower limited, speed provided no advantage in combat over 28 knot battleships but drove a hullforms that was awful. Well the list goes on for pages. The Dark wrote:Eh. Bismarck was a good design for the limits placed on it, but overall it was a mediocre battleship. Good firepower, but weak armor. Heck, the Bayern class carried heavier armor on a ship 8000 tons less massive. The only reason Hood died so easy was it was a battlecruiser with a 6" belt and 3" deck. I'd prefer a Scharnhorst to the Bismarck. Sure, the firepower's a bit less, but the armor's actually better and the ship's 3 knots faster. Of course, Iowas could take on all comers and have a good chance of winning. Faster than Yamato or Bismarck, better guns than Yamato (those 18"ers had no rate of fire), and better armor than Bismarck.
For comparisons of battleships, I recommend battleship.org. The used the Iowa as the standard for rating other battleships and battlecruisers, giving it a 100 in speed, armor, and firepower as the basis. Here's a quick rundown of some of the ships:
Iowa: 300
Yamato: 295
Bismarck: 286
Scharnhorst: 274
Richelieu: 261
King George V: 249
Vittorio Veneto: 231
Hood: 227
