W00t! New computer!

My parents bought me a spiffy new computer! Though my parents chose an HP, it's still damned nice. Anyway, thought I'd vent some excitement here, :). Here are the specs:

2.4 ghz
512 megs of RAM
32x 10x 40x cd-rw
16x dvd-rom
XP Home Edition
80 gig hard drive

I hope to slap in a nice Linux OS here...I've been wondering, which one do you guys like better, Red Hat or Yellow Dog?

Ah, and I've got a question. You see, with this I ran out and grabbed an Xtasy Geforce 4. Unfortunately, I can't seem to install it. I know that this thing has an integrated graphics card, and I have no experience nor support to know how to disable the damned thing. On a second, more newbish note, the card will not slide into the slot damnit!

Oh yah...I had a quick edit up there in hopes I could get it before anyone replied...Damn.

And...That's the sickest computer I've seen in awhile. Does it like S&M or so? I've heard those things have a Conquer-The-World complex.

I don't think you have to disable the onboard...should be automatic IIRC. As for not fitting, is it AGP or PCI?

PCI...I've tried both empty slots, agp specific be damned, :)

It has something to do with the EXI audio hook-up slot. Shift your motherboard to mainstream NTV driver software and you should be fine. Just make sure that the LEXI datastream isn't deep-embedded in the networking video reciever.

After plugging the video card into the AGP port, you will need to go into your BIOS and disable the onboard vide.

Don't forget to drive-shift the main capacitor bulb to the JKL network adapter.

I'm getting a notebook in a few days. But I can't decide which one to buy. I'm trying to keep it small with max battery life and processor speed.

So far I've narrowed it down to these two. I don't have enough money for the 1700M5 model yet(no tax if anyone in Toronto is thinking of buying a computer).

Is the extra memory from 256 -> 512, a 1" increase in monitor size and a carrying bag worth the the $300 dollar difference? Also I'll be starting to take some unix courses next semester and I'm wondering how could I divide the drive into 20GB peices between xp and unix.

MOBILE P4 PROCESSOR-M 1.7GHZ
Memory 256MB DDR-SDRAM at 266MHZ
40GB
14" XGA TFT LCD SCREEN
16x/12x/24x CD-RW + 8x DVD
USB 2.0 (2)

Really...so what happens? Does it not go in all the way? Does the plate match up with the slot on the back?

I'm pretty sure the plates match up an all, but the card just will not slide all the way in. The top slot's got a bunch of interesting little knobs in the way, so I decided to leave it alone, but the center slot looks empty...I'm not entirely sure why it's not going in.

Oh, and notebook-wise, I wouldn't touch anything but an IBM, except maybe for an Alienware :). IBM makes some damned good laptops.

Did you seat the card? As in, push it in all the way?

That's just it, I can't...I'm afraid to push any harder for fear of breaking an $88 piece of divinity.
