Too Much Freedom In The West?

Having just seen a CNN report on women in the already wild Afghanistan, one woman said even though she hates the discrimination they face, she also is disgusted by the west and how women go around "half naked" almost.

Do you think there is such a thing as too much freedom, and if so, does the west have it?

she is just mad that she can't dress up trampy and act like a hoe. Instead she has to dress up in Burke and to submit to the smelly will of her pimp...I mean owner...i mean husband

What's wrong with women going around half-naked? Are they hurting anyone? No. Are they discriminating against anyone? No. Are they violating anyone's rights? No. Are they committing an injustice? No. Are they damaging the environment by being half-naked? No.

Why doesn't this woman feel disgusted by the Kalahari bushmen tribes of Africa, whose women wear far less clothing than any American woman?

This Afghan woman is just another example of the puritan mentality that morality revolves 90% around sexual hang-ups.

Sure, there's a such thing as too much freedom. Total freedom is anarchy. But the example used is a lousy one.

I dont think there is too much freedom in the West. I think there are quite a few areas in the west where we have too little freedom. The govt can seize your property for getting caught with marijuana. In Oakland and SF they can seize your car if they THINK you have been soliciting prostitutes. You do not need to be convicted.

Anyway, I think a better question is do Westerners take their freedom for granted.

PS: I dont think there is anything wrong with women walking around half naked. :P

I know that too much is anarchy and is simply not the way forward. But this woman seems pretty messed up, ironically the clip with her trying to get food and then being beaten up by others scrabbling for supplies is ironic. That was too much freedom.

Really I find it weird someone can actually justify women go around wearing Burkhas all the time. It isn't right, but then, I guess I'm not right for wearing a t-shirt that exposes skin to the air.

Some cultures and ideals seem too mixed up for reality.

Yes, there is such a thing, but it's not im place anywhere. Anyway, during the rule of the Taliban, female was showing her face, and I'm sure the women are just happy to show their faces.

After what happened last year, I have becomed almost deafened to criticism against "too much freedom" in the West. I have become deafened to extremists on the Right and Left, who advocate self-flagellation for being "too wishy washy" or being "dirty bourgeois consumers", who preach of "divine retibution for our sins" or "karmic retribution for our indulgences" (gee, isn't it funny how both the Right and the Left end up sounding identical once you hose away the crap). Don't get me wrong, I still think there is a problem with foreign policy and exploitation of the Third World. There are some very complex issues here that I don't have time to go into, even if I had researched them far more thoroughly than I have. But at the end of the day, I respect the rights of myself and others to wear skimpy clothing, read a book by Salman Rushdie or Clive Barker, roleplay as sex-starved aliens on the net, visit art galleries, listen to loud music, or write a novel that condemns political and religious extremists as the counterproductive fruit loops they are. Mass murder does nothing but ruin the already dubious credibility of anyone connected to 3rd world dictatorships.

Condemn the west for greed or hypocricy, if you really must. But don't shoot yourself in the foot by condemning the basic rights that you take for granted.

And, let's face it, not even pacifists are going to miss the Taliban.

SF = San Fransisco????????

I thought that was one of the most liberal cities in the USA!!!!!

Expect a rise in male virginity in these places. No, don't laugh, its going to happen.

As for taking freedom for granted ... yes, that is a very good question indeed. I think it is is important not to take one's freedom for granted or abuse it in ridiculous ways - not because freedom is overrated, but because it's sacred.
