Should I Worry?

My girlfriend is trying to contact her family doctor about getting a refill on her birth control pills. He wants her to see her gynecologist before she gets her next refill. The problem is that due to the holidays, it's very unlikely she'd get an appointment before this month's prescription runs out.
Unfortunately, she's unable to talk directly to her doctor; his nurse seems adamant that she be the intermediary. The last conversation my gf had with her, she again was told that she absolutely had to talk to her gynecologist, a Dr. Berstein. My gf was puzzled, as it's been almost 7 years since she's seen a gyno. A few minutes later, the name clicked, he's her
podiatrist.
Late breaking news: Gf's just informed me that she called back as soon as she figured out who Berstein was, the nurse finally agreed she should talk directly to the doctor. She's pretty sure she knows how the "nurse" got confused. Anyone wanna take a guess?

The Gynecologist/Podiatrist mix-up reminds me of a partial joke I just heard this week.

Did she get an exam by her family doctor?
If she did and she now needs to see her gyno, there might be something wrong.

Which one's a podiatrist, again?

The way she tells it, he simply wants her to see a gyno before the next refill. I think he's just alarmed at the amount of time since her last checkup and wants to make sure her prescription (which apparently can change over time) doesn't need to be adjusted.
All she's trying to ask for is one last refill for the month of Jan, because it's very likely that will be her earliest opportunity to see a gyno.

You need prescriptions for birth control pills ?
Does your country / state require them? Or is it something other then that?

It doesn't seem like there is anything to worry about. If she has been healthy and all. It seems to just be precautionary.

Ah, I see that I should have made the topic heading a bit less serious. I was shooting for more of a humorous angle by describing the nurse's recommendation for my gf to see a podiatrist about getting bc pills.
My apologies if I misled anyone regarding the content of this thread.

As far as I know they are a prescription item in all of the U.S.
