Best and Worst Films of 2005

Post by JME2 »

Simply put, as we near the end of 2005, what were the best and worst films that you had the fortune/misfortune of seeing within the theaters? I'll start the bat rolling:

Best
1. ROTS
2. Batman Begins
3. Steamboy
4. Howl's Moving Castle
5. Serenity
6. Good Night and Good Luck

Worst
1. White Noise
2. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
3. Sahara
4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Edit -- 5. War of the Worlds

Best:
1. ROTS
2. Batman Begins
3. Serenity
4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

I can't really say were really bad, although I've haven't seen too many new movies this year. However, Hitchhiker's Guide wasn't what it could have been, and War of the Worlds was kind of disappointing.

These are just the movies I've seen.

BEST:
1. Batman Begins (easily)
2. Serentiy
3. March of the Penguins
4. Wallace and Grommit: Curse of the Were Rabbit
5. 40 Year Old Virgin

Meh territory:

6. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Unconvincing Voldemort
7. Narnia: The Lion, the Lich and the Wardrobe 8)

WORST:
1. War of the Worlds (just awful, awful characters and an ending to make a grown man cry in frsutration)
2. Revenge of the Sith (I really didn't like it, no matter how much I tried)

Anything else I've seen has been totally forgotten.

I don't see bad movies in the theaters.

Best five films I've seen on the screen this year, in no particular order:

Syriana
The 40-Year Old Virgin
Serenity
Batman Begins
Revenge of the Sith

And a bonus for Ghostbusters, although it doesn't count since it wasn't released this year.

Let's see. I hope these are all titles from this year; I get screwed up sometimes.

1. Cave. This was a pretty bland, generic monster movie, with a bland plot, bland characters, and pathetic, thinly disguised sequel-hoping ending. The only reprieve was that it had some very pretty cave scenery.

2. Fantastic Four. This is a bit of a personal choice, but I really didn't like this movie. It just made me squirm in my seat when I saw it at the theatres, from the name "Victor von Doom" to the ridiculously obvious romantic tension between Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, to the toy-selling lines.

Haven't had a chance to see many films this year.

The Best were Serenity, Batman Begins, ROTS

The worst was War of the Worlds. I'm sure there was another film I saw this year, but I'm damned if I can remember what it was.

The Core was from 2003 I think. Best movie I saw this year was Serenity, and I can't afford to see bad movies.

Yay! Rob Wilson's back! :D

I only watched two movies this year, Batman Begins and RotS. Really loved Batman, RotS was pretty good too but not quite up to the same level. I plan on seeing Narnia after the holiday madness is over, I hope it's good.

Feel the love. Glad to see you back from Nepal (yes I realise that was a while ago, but I've been gone a while :P ). Make the most of it, I'm only back for a short while. My work load next year means even more absence than this year.

I'm planning on seeing Kong soon and taking the Godkids out to see Narnia, and then try and track down Wallace and Gromit.

King Kong probably wasn't the worst movie of the year, but the fact that it had a $200 million budget bumps it up there. Peter Jackson should never be allowed to use slow motion again or make a movie over 2 hours long.

I didn't see any movies in theater I was very disappointed by, but here are the top 5 that I avoided because, based on Reputable Internet Buddies, they would have been:

1: Fantastic Four
2: Doom
3: HG2G
4: Aeon Flux
5: ....in honorary fifth place I'll say Mirrormask. It was worth the price of admission (and the missed sleep needed) but if they'd spent a little more time on exposition (setting up sympathy for main character) and maybe had a third questing character for more interesting journey dynamics... there were just lots of things that could have been done a bit better but weren't. Maybe becuase of the superlow budget, but still.

Top 5 movies I'd've liked to've seen in theaters or still plan to (in no particular order):
1: 40 Year Old Virgin (Cross refrence against list of "could have been shit but rocked," not listed here.)
2: That Gay Cowboy Incredible Hulk Sequel
3: Kong
4: Syriana
5: The Devil's Rejects

Not a recommendation then. Well hopefully I'll enjoy it.

Sin City I saw that as well, for some reason I thought that was last year. Damn but my sense of time has gone out the window.
