I have a LARGE amont of files which all have the wrond extrntion (jpg instead of gif). Is there any way that I can re-name them to the correct extention without going to each individual one? I'm running Windows 2000.

<sigh> the kids of today.... :)

Use the console.

Start->run->"CMD"

type CD at the prompt followed by a space, a backslash and the full path to the directory that contains the files you need to rename. If the path has spaces put the whole thing (including the backslash but not the space after CD) in double quotes.

now type ren *.jpg *.gif

All .jpg files in the directory will be renamed to .gif.

type 'exit' to close the console window.

Irfanview can get it done pretty quick. Just click on one of the files in question, and IV will pop a dialog saying "<File>.jpg is a .GIF file with incorrect extension! Rename?" Hit the Yes button, then use the mouse scroll to go to the next file. Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

Do they have the wrong extension, or are they actually the wrong filetype? If you're trying to convert them all from JPEG to GIF, simply changing the extensions won't work.

I think they're probly the wrong extension. M$Paint can be used to change the filetype; just open and save as whatever extension you want. Bad News. You have to do it one at a time. Bad News 2: MSPaint has a shitty JPEG/GIF Compressor.

Wrong extention. No idea WHY they would be named with the wrong extention. Such are the hazards of downloading stuff over the internet.

BTW, the command line works fine. Thanks.

:lol: You could try writing a batch file, though Enlightment's idea is probably the best.

Nope.
Downloaded all of the Ranma 1/2 manga off of IRC. (That's a LOT of files to re-name!)
