As many as 1,000 potential terrorists detained; INS refuses to give any count.

As of this writing this story has not been reported by any of the major national US-based online news outlets save for the LA Times. Draw your own conclusions.

Not enough information, but the BBC is stating that those 6-700 people had various problems with the INS (visa or otherwise). Not enough information, but I consider the BBC a reputable source.

Given that the USA's estimated number of illegal's in the range of 6-9 million, yeah I can buy that they found the whole of 600-1000 of them.
