As many as 1,000 potential terrorists detained; INS refuses to give any count.
As of this writing this story has
not been reported by any of the major national US-based online news outlets save for the LA Times. Draw your own conclusions.

From the article, it appears that this is merely a roundup by the INS
of people who have overstayed their visas, etc etc...
He said that those arrested had violated immigration laws,
overstayed their visas or were wanted for crimes.
Uh, aren't we supposed to enforce our immigration laws or not?

Not enough information, but the BBC is stating that those 6-700 people had various problems with the INS (visa or otherwise). Not enough information, but I consider the BBC a reputable source.

Given that the USA's estimated number of illegal's in the range of 6-9
million, yeah I can buy that they found the whole of 600-1000 of them.
