Computar issues

OK, the lovely OS that is XP won't let me change the default app to edit pictures. I tried changing it in the usual place (under extensions) but the only command that shows up there is "open". If I right-click a TIFF and edit it, it opens in MSPAINT which is gh3y and XP will automatically restore it if I delete or edit it (WTF?!?). I can't find the reg hack to fix this either. Clues please!
(MS bashing will immediately be deleted.)

Microsoft doesn't believe you're entitled to use 3rd party applications to view images on WinXP. The only way to work around the problem (short of upgrading to Win2K or Linux) is to use regedit and disable a portion of the monopoly control code:

Not exactly what I was looking for, but it did link to what I was looking for. Thanks!

In Explorer, go to Tools->Folder Options. In the File Types tab, you'll see a list of extentions and their associations, which you can change to your heart's content.

Hrm, I didn't have to change that registry key for the usual fix to work.

You can also hold down the shift key, and right-click on the image file and select Open With. Pick whatever program you want to use (default is the Fax viewer) and check the box that says "always open with XXXX" where XXXX is the application in question.

I already know the method you are suggesting, Phong and Vertigo. However, the default editing program regardless of what you have it set to open with is MSPAINT. And you can't change it from that location. You must regh4ack.

It doesn't do that on my version. What are you running, that gay ass Home edition?

This is really odd then. I've done several installations of XP Pro in the past and this has never come up. Maybe you installed spyware by accident and it fucked up your file associations? There was something similar done by the Ask Jeeves website, where it set your homepage to Ask Jeeves and blocked the ability for the user to change it. There was a BIG stink made over this, and they eventually removed that code from their site.

Just add another action called "&edit with paintshop" or whatever.

Yeah. Neither Vertigo or I have that problem - XP even shows me a list of programs that would be suitable for this (in addition to choosing others).

How many of you did clean installs vs upgrades from other strains of Windows? If any of you upgraded, did you keep your registry hives or tell the Windows infector (installer) to create new registries? Possibly Microsoft decided that people who upgrade from Win9X should have no right to use other image viewers but people who install from scratch shouldn't be under the same restrictions.

I've done both and never had a problem with either.

I don't care anymore. It doesn't matter.

Great, maybe you'll share how you did it with us someday
