I believe it's his birthday today. He was looking rather healthy when I met him(well...he was waving to a crowd, and I was in the crowd...) so I'm sure the age isn't weighing on him at all.

I'm not a fan of letting people go for connivance and we would have done just fine without him. Totally removing all traces of the old ways of Japan may very well have resulted in a nation that could and would accept it's past in the future like Germany did.

I was expecting mass flamage there. I've been brain washed by my grandma a bit into thinking the japs are buggers. My grand father was in a jap PoW for 3.5 years, yet got squat from the jp gov, but got 10,000pounds sterling from the British government. He was in the Mercantile Marine.

The Japanese are fine people. Whilst living in Japan I have observed only the heights standards of politeness, generosity, and kindness. Yes, their culture has some rough edges. Yes, they need to accept what has happened in the past. But we need to accept that it is the past.

I bet that if I posted something like 'Happy Birthday to Queen Elizabeth' I would have gotten something far differant in response.
