A question about computers

For Chrsitmas, I got a new computer. However, when I was installing the old games, the files for the games weren't transferred. I want these files transferred. I could transfer the files with floppy disks, but that would take forever, and I have individual files that couldn't fit on one floppy disk. I could use a CD, but the computer with the files doesnt' have CD-writing hardware. Does anyone here know the quickest way to transfer files between two computers? Personally, I don't know why it's os hard to transfer files.

You have two options:
  • 1) Buy a small USB disk. They're fucking great and the 128 MB models are very cheap. Kiss floppies goodbye.

    2) get a cable. and direct connect both computers.

Just pointing out that in your sig you put "AIFF." It's "AIIF."

What kind of computer did you get? I have one of the cheap ass dell dimensions. POS. :D

The fastest way is to open up the computers, pull out the HD with the data you need in install it into the computer that needs the data. Then copy things over and you're done. Then you want to put the HD back into the old computer of course. Option 2 would be to pull the CDR drive from the new comp and install it in the old computer, then burn a CD of the files, after which everything gets put back in the right computer. Problems: requires a fair bit of knowledge of configuring hardware, and incompatibilities and accidents are just waiting to happen.

Do both machines have Ethernet network interfaces? If so, get yourself a cross-over cable and send the files that way. Much faster than through the serial bus with a null cable.

The easiest and cheapest way is to transfer files between two computers without ethernet or CDRW capabilities is to use a null modem cable or laplink-style parallel cable connection. Data rates will be extremely pathetic, however (11 kilobytes per second) so this isn't an option if you have a lot of data to move.

Moving the old hard drive into the new system is another option but it requires a fair bit of knowhow. No offense intended, but I don't think you would have asked this question if you were familiar enough with computers to swap out a hard drive. :D

If you're prepared to spend money then networking the two systems is the best bet. Not only will you be able to transfer your files at up to 10 megabytes/sec (for 100MBps Ethernet) but since the connection is persistant you'll be able to share printers or internet access on both of your systems. The easiest way to set up a two computer network is to get two USB-to-ethernet interfaces and an ethernet crossover cable. There are also phoneline networking systems available if you don't run to run wires but they're slower than real ethernet.

I suggest a binary screen dump, page by page, of the source data. Then, call out the hex values to someone sitting on the other computer, who can enter them manually. This should take no more than thirty or forty years.

ROTFLMAO! Make sure to speak with a clear and loud voice, wouldn't want to have to go back and look for a mistake...
