Night terrors TNG episode

anyone see this episode of TNG, in which they try a deflector dish beam and it doesn't push them away from the rift that if draining thier energy, then the aliens that are sending telepathic messages tell through telepathy that they need hydrogen to combust to push them away from the rift, which the enterprise gives them, why didn't the deflector dish beam work? Like when they used it against the borg and it didn't do anything either, but earlier in Best of both worlds they were able to terminate a borg tractor beam with thier phasers and they said the deflector dish beam would be a lot more powerful, just what kind of particles do phasers and the deflector dish beam fire?

Whatever the deflector dish fires out, and we don't know, all we know is that the energy output is less than that which can be acheived by the coupling of a large volume of hydrogen with some other element (in other words extremely low).

I'm sorry, that was a terrifying run-on sentence.

Quick, easy answer: We don't know.

More in depth answer: Phaser particles.. Whatever they are(Most use the word Nadion, I don't know where it's from).. Behave very oddly. I could give you a long list of how they work, but check out Mike's site for his 'NDF' page. This covers the odd workings of Phasers beautifully.

As for the Deflector Dish, I'm not sure. No real reference is made, but it appears to be a DET weapon. That is, one that works by directly transferring energy, not making a wierd chain reaction take place.

That episode could legitimately considered non canon. Even Jonathan Frakes said it was sh*t.

Aliens: "Eyes in the dark".

Troi: "Who are you?"

ugh.....

I thought that episode was scary, I thought they could have done it 10x better if they didn't added the treknobabble.

Why did they say that "eyes in the dark" crap, why didn't they just say "We need hydrogen" since they could speak thier language.

Perhaps they could telepathically sense that they were dealing with a blithering idiot, so they tried to dumb it down for her :)
