Best Computer/Console Games

Pretty straightforward.
You say what your favorite game is and why then a bit of reasoning and then you rebuke others for their poor inferior choices.
My Picks:
Homeworld
Black And White
The Sims
In each of these games you get to control things, In B&W you're a god, in Sims you're basically a god, guiding peoples lives, and in HW you are fleet command ordering your ships do do as you please.
Homeworld is also if derivative of Star Wars and BSG, intensely epic and well made as far as voice acting and scripting goes. And they got the band Yes to write and perform a song dedicated to the game. Homeworld is my favorite game for it's usability and originality, first strategy game to really work in three dimensions.
B&W, you get to control the lives of humans and be as good or bad a god as you want. It's a way to express your personality on a computer, in the way you play.
The Sims, same as B&W, except this game delves deeper into the personal lives of those you control. You control their part in the world.

- Half-Life, for revolutionizing FPSs and creating a gigantic mod community.
- Hitman 2, for its very dynamic and entertaining play.
- Command & Conquer, for making RTS a seperate genre, as well as setting the standard for all RTSs to come.
- Earth & Beyond, for its high coolness factor and superior MMORPG design.
- Sudden Strike 2, for giving us the "chess" of RTSs (as opposed to C&C-style "checkers").
- Baldur's Gate 2, for being the best CRPG to date, IMNSHO.
Can't think of anything else which really stood out.

Console: Chrono Trigger followed closely be Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I've replayed both dozens and dozens of times and neither has lost it's luster. The true measure of a great game.
Honorable Mentions: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Both awesome games with high replay value.
PC: Warcraft 2. Best strategy game ever. Sure it doesn't have all the bells and whistles but it's still replayable time and time again. I still have a few hundred custom maps. An awesome game rivaled only by starcraft
Honorable mentions: Doom, StarCraft, Dark Forces

Ah, yes, forgot console nominations. Most of these are pretty old, since I no longer play on consoles:
- A Link to the Past. Mmm... coolness... (SNES)
- Final Fantasy III, best Final Fantasy IMNSHO. (SNES)
- A very obscure SNES game called E.V.O. I would love to be playing it right now, but alas, it has been lost in piles of junk. This was an awesome RPG, but sadly never sold well and the company went out of business. (SNES)
- Goldeneye. Forever the standard for console FPSs. Made console multiplayer essentially required. (N64)
- Mario Bros. Der. (NES)
- Mario 3. This game was just awesome. (NES)
- Super Conflict. Same scenario as E.V.O. IIRC, the only true wargame for a console. (SNES)
- Starfox 64, because I 0wnz0rz all in that game. No one can touch my evasive maneuvers
(N64)

My favourites:
- Sid Meier's Civilization III, the best game ever. Sid Meyer is simply a genius. (Civ (tos) and Civ II are also very good games)
- Baldur's Gate II:Shadows of Amn, the best computer RPG ever.
- Master of Orion II:Battle for Antares, old, but still the best galactic empire building game around.
- Total Annihiliation, old, but still the best light real time strategy around.
- Monkey Island II, ancient, but with out guestion the best advanture game ever.
- Alpha Centauri, not as good as CivIII as a single player game, but can be played as a multiplayer game.

Civ3 was kept from greatness because the combat system sucked donkeys balls. Ive been playing it again recently and it is so annoying to have a Spearman kill your Infantry or Cavalry unit. WTF?

Deus Ex - My favorite game of all time. The first game to genuinely make me question the morality of my actions, and the first to make me feel remorseful for what I'd done. Wonderful and deeply mature.
M1 Tank Platoon - the original, on the Amiga. Truly the Operation: Flashpoint of its day (well, actually, that was probably Hunter. But that's another story).
Disowned by many as just too much of a simulation to be fun, a point of view that the 12-year-old me could never understand. I mean - you're riding around in an MBT, and you've got three more at your beck and call; your raison d'tre is to blow the shit out of things; you can waste people with artillery! What's there not to love?
I never quite got on with the sequel, because it seemed to actually require tactical skill and the Pact forces weren't such a pushover as in the good ol' days.
Operation: Flashpoint - Naturally.
Resident Evil 2 - For a long time, I thought I was a fan of the RE series. I now realise I just like RE2. Neither the original nor the subsequent games were as scary, atmospheric or well-produced as this.
Morrowind - A definite contender for best game of all time IMO, and may yet dislodge Deus Ex from that position if it's consistent enough. This is the kind of game I've been wanting to play since I was a kid; a RPG with almost complete freedom of action and personal expression. I love it, and I don't even own it (yet, anyway. I've been scavenging Morrowind time off a friend, and I'm blown away by its scope.)

Rainbow 6 series - what people should have been playing instead of CS.
Operation Flashpoint - because I'm in it (gotta love developers who repay favours).
Morrowind - awesome RPG.
Arcanum - even more awesome RPG.
OMF2097 - because its cool.
IL-2 Sturmovik - best combat flight sim since PAW1942
Pacific Air War, 1942 - best combat flight sim ever, back in the days when it was personal, not from beyond visual range.
TIE Fighter - best SW game ever.
Civilisation 3 - need I say more.
SimGolf - ITS TOO DAMN ADDICTIVE!
Colin McRae Rally 2 - Best racing game ever.
No One Lives Forever - Awesome game.
Homeworld - Best recent RTS
Command and Conquer (original, not ANY of the spin-offs or sequels) - Most crack-like code ever.
*edit* Oh and:
Outcast - most amazing and inspiring game I have EVER played (once you get it working)
[another edit] How could I forget:
Deus Ex - A truly beautiful and wonderful game.

You were IN Op Flash? How so?

I just got Age of Mythology and it kicks ass. The game play is pretty much like the other AoE games except for being able to put a few myth units in your otherwise regular army and use gifts from the gods. currently I've been using that water god of the greeks but I've heard good things about Ra. To bad that I'm not able to play it on Mulitplayer today cause it ain't allowing logins for some reason. Good game, I rate it 9.5
Oh yeah, I like Renegade when I play it online and Counter Strike. I would like Diablo 2 more but you have to put to much time into it and I'm getting karpel tunnel syndrome from all the pointing and clicking in quick succession. Oh yes, lets not forget about the Sims, to bad my cousin has borrowed that game for about 6 months now. Bleh, almost forgot Civilization 3. Empire Earth fell short, by that I mean the graphics hurts my eyes. Otherwise it was a good game.

I was in e-mail correspondance with Bohemia Interactive back in '99.
At the time I had "War isn't about who's right, its about who's left." as my .sig.
They said that they liked it and asked if I had any more war/death related quotes. I said I'd dig some up for them.
I e-mailed them a whole chunk of quotes, which became the "death quotes" of the game.
They said that they'd find a way to thank me for my help.
Needless to say, when it came out, I bought it. After playing it for a bit I died and came across:
"War isn't about who's right, its about who's left - Anders Russell"
I need to find a screen cap with that quote. Its a bastardisation of the quote by Bertrand Russell, but hey...

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Grand Theft Auto 3, Final Fantasy VIII (yes, I know I'm dumb and everyone loves VII), Black & White, and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Oh, and my friend Bryan, along with his partner, did the music for 'Deus Ex,' among other games, while we're bragging.
That
is really cool about your death quotes, though, Ando.
EDIT: Err, that's partner as in 'musical composition/execution' partner. Just so we're clear on that.

Oh hell yes it's still worth getting. That game rocks, and it's only like $20 now. Run, do not walk, etc etc...

I can't believe I forgot metroid
I really want to get FS2 I can't find it anywhere though.
And I can't get anything like AoE or AoM Homeworld ruined it for me, I personally find that I keep playing HW, though I like the huge modding comm they have too.
If you have it here are a couple of URLs

Right now it's Metroid Prime.
However, nothing beats the Legend of Zelda.

All Zelda games except the second NES one (yes, I liked Majora's Mask)
SMB 3, 4 and 5 (The last NES one and the two SNES ones)
Mega Man 3
StarFox 64
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 4,5,6
Super Metroid
et cetera.
For the record, Mario Sunshine is by far the most fucking annoying game I have ever played. Good music, good graphics, shitty physics, bad control, HORRID camera. It also annoys me that Mario had more moves in 64. And I dislike the damn water tank.
