Maximum Delta-t possible for you to date someone ...

Well people, what's you limit? How much older or younger than you can a person be before you consider them too old or too young?

I only ask because right now, I'm 19; I'll be 20 in a few months, and I'm interested in a 17 year-old, so I figured I'd post a topic on it.

Everything is fine as long as your relationship is purely platonic, and platonically pure. In other words don't do anything you would find awkward if both sets of parents were watching. If you're(second person plural) pretty compatible and mature in your relationship then everything is fine.

As long as you're not breaking any laws the "half your age plus 7" rule of thumb seems to work nicely. At my present age of 23 I don't think I'd date anyone more than 3-4 years younger or older than me, as maturity levels and interests tend to be incompatible outside of this range. I did date someone 6 years older than me a few years ago and that was damn strange and didn't work out.

I'd watch it with someone younger, more for a legal prospective in your case than an ethical one.

Relationshipwise that's about the youngest I'd date provided she was mature enough. As for older, it depends entirely upon the person.

What excatly is the point in having a girlfriend if your relationship is purely platonic? Why would you even call someone you are having a purely platonical rerationship with a girlfriend?

 ROLFMAO!!!
Either you're a really freaky exhibitionist or you're going to die as a virgin.

Durandal having a relationship, and doing the dirty, with someone only two or three years younger then your self is OK.

Hmmm, this is a toughie, since my interest has gone in both directions as of late.

I'm 24. I'd say the youngest I'd be interested in is probably 20, unless he's reeeeeeeeeally mature. There's just too much stuff that goes on during those college years (damn I sound old) that he wouldn't have experienced yet.

As for the oldest age I'd probably be into, I'd have to say early/mid-thirties. I had a thing a year or two ago for this guy who was 33 (it must have been 2 years ago, because he was 11 years older than I was then).

I guess the moral of the story is that older is better than younger. Although my preference lies with guys who are my age or a few years older.

When you're 50, she'll be 48.

From 17 to 19 might bring some level of maturity differences, but those will lessen pretty quickly.

Well I'm 22 now, but I wouldn't go any lower than 20. Upper limit more or less my age. I can make exceptions for the upper limit though.

I'm assuming you're a straight male, and you can bash me over the head if I'm wrong.

That's fine - two years is nothing. Especially with the guy older than the girl - my boyfriend and I have 3 years difference, and there's no problem (when we started, I was 19, and he was 22). I don't notice age differences of 3 years with my current friends - I'm a fourth year, and anyone at uni is fair game [except, of course, they're not because I'm quite satisified thank you very much]
At this early adult phase, I think anyone who's a young adult is fair game - no adolescents, so she'd have to be a mature 17 year old, but I'm sure she's fine if you're really interested, up to even mid 30s - just before anything approaching middle age could be possibly accused of setting in.

I'm in HS, so the youngest woman I'd be willing to date would be around 14-15, while the oldest one would be 18. In college, I'd probably olny date other college girls. It's usually the woman that gets married an older person (You hear of stories of men in their 50s marrying women in thier 20's, but not the other way around), I'm guessing probably because the man wants children.

Ooh, ohh I've done this in a basic social anthrop course - it boils down to exactly that, sort of -men prefer youthfulness and looks in a woman, and women look for wealth (which is more forthcoming in an older man) and personality.

A 19 or 20 yr old male with a 17 yr old female is no big deal. In most cases the maturity levels are probably pretty close. I dated a 17 year old at 19 and it was not a problem.

For me, I would not date much under 23 or 24, just because chances are anyone younger has a whole different set of goals in life. Im 31.

For me personally the age group 24-28 is probably ideal.

I use the rule of thumb check the tens place and add 1

IE 10-19 2+-
20-29 3+-
30-39 4+-

And so on

Does it really matter what the numbers are?

If you think she's right for you, just do it!

I'm probably the only one dating a woman noticably older than me.. But basically, if both people like each other, love each other, screw the rest. We only get one chance in this life, why waste it on other people's opinions?

I'm currently a freshman, so for me, I'd probably limit to +/-1

My only rules of thumb are:
1) It better be legal
2) If you can honestly enjoy carrying a conversation into perfect silence and be happy.

I tend to think along those lines. Adolescence is a time of rapid growth, so the difference between a 17 and 19 year-old may seem large right now, but as you get older, the difference becomes negligible. Right now, though, she's definitely a person I could date. Her physique is just the kind that makes me drool (petite with a great body), and she's extremely intelligent.

She doesn't turn 18 for another 6 months, though ...

Ah well. She gets back from Colorado tomorrow (woohoo!), and I'm going to try and spend New Year's with her, so we'll so how that develops.

Here Here.

I've dated my age, I've dated yonger, and I've date 5 years older...age wasn't what mattered we were having fun with one another and that was it.

Only five?

I start to wonder if I've broken a taboo..

Indeed, this may give me enough confidence to ask my hair stylist out. :)

It depends on one variable, how mature are they?

(Of course, legality should enter into it, but in Canada the legal age is 14, so I simply can't imagine meeting a 13 year old who is mature enough for me to date. Hell, most 30 year olds I know wouldn't make the cut.)

If the person is close to mature as you are, then I see no problem. However, considering she's a 17 year old female and you are a 19 year male that hangs around in a Star Wars vs. Star Trek webboard, I'd assume she's at least twice as mature as you.
