PC Game descision.

I have a $40 gift card to target I got for Christmas, seeing how I upgraded my video card yesterday, got the full OpenGL support I needed, I decided to get a new game for my computer.

A couple of ideas I've had are Half-Life Platinum pack(5 half-life games, 40 bucks), Grand Theft Auto 3, Civ 3.

I don't care much for FPSs, but I've heard Half-Life is really good, I liked Civ 2 alot, and I've never played GTA 3 at all. Also I was thinking about one of the online RPGs but I don't want to have to pay $10 a month to do so.

Any advice?

Definetly half life. Not a very good single player game, but multiplayer is awsome. If you dont like the basic half life multi, there are hundreds of mods to download. I have around 20 mods I like to play. GTA3 is a good game but it gets old.

I personally would go with Civ3, an excellent strategy game for any civ fan.

I would say Half-Life, too. Although the single player gets boring after a while it is nearly a must-play at least once. It is a prime example of how to mix storytelling and FPS. It also has a huge fanbase with plenty of mods.

I'd wait for MOO3 or the new SW online game.

Half-Life is good, especially when the Platinum pack includes both single-person expansion packs. However, GTA3 is also very good, entertaining, and highly addictive--although it features no multiplayer.

It all depends. Do you like third-person games like Tomb Raider as well as driving games? Then get GTA3. If you like first-person shooters, get Half-Life Platinum.

Usually FPS gets old really fast to me, the only one that has been able to hold my attention for longer then a week is Metroid Prime, but it's not like any other FPS, and is more like a new spin on the old metroid game. A very very very very good spin, and I think the best change to make up for the difficultly of aiming in 3d since Z-Targeting. But the only FPS multiplayer I've done is Duke Nukem at my friends house.

But with GTA3, while I like the concept and out of car type of gaming, I usually hate racing games.

GTA3 is more like Carmageddon 2 than it is, say, Grand Prix Racing. There are only a couple of 'racing' missions out of about 70 missions total. Mostly, you get to drive around without any timer and wreak havoc on your own agenda.

I'd go with Half-Life, its a classic. I'm assuming the pack comes with Blue Shift, which gives a nice graphical upgrade (1999 graphics...*shudder*). Half-Life is not your standard FPS either. Before it, I hated FPSs in general, even Duke 3D I didn't like all that much. Half-Life's single player is pretty cool, the headcrabs used to scare the shit out of me. A little too much puzzle-solving crate-jumping busy work for my tastes, but I still loved it. The multiplayer is great, start with some basic Op For games, then work your way to TFC, then go and get Firearms or Day of Defeat, the latter of which I still play daily. So, technically I've been playing Half-Life for 3 years.

If you have a PS2 I'd get GTA 3 for it. I've played Half Life on the PS2 and loved it. However, if that pack your talking about has Counter Strike in it, I'd prolly go for it. (Especially since your looking for a PC game). Personally Half Life isn't just a FPS. It has sort of a roaming around type feel, which is hugely refreshing. Not on the same level, but feels sort of how Metroid did. Although Metroid gives you a hell of a lot of exploration. Ah fuck it. I ain't never played Civ3, with GTA 3 it's one of those, if I can get it on console instead of PC then I go console. And Half Life has what, 5 games in that pack. I usually stick to PC when playing FPS.

Well, since you answered go for GTA3...the racing in the game is a bare minimum and the game free flow alone will give you plenty of naughty things to do.

GTA3
Trash Talk
Oh yeah, MC Hawking and DJ Doomsday,
kicking it with the hardcore beat,
to get you out your seat.
We be laying this down for PC Gamer in 2002.

Verse 1
GTA3's like the Sims to me,
a real life simulator 'cause that's where I be,
on the street, packing heat, car jacking, head cracking,
taking duckets from the pockets of the bourgeoisie.
In Liberty City, it's easy to score.
no one in this city locks their car door.
So I'm jacking every cheetah that I happen to see,
not looking like a dot, I'm kicking it 3D.

Then just to mix it up I jack an Esperanto,
uzi out the window spraying the spank ho's.
police take notice so I hit the gas,
and hit the Pay'n'Spray to get the cops off my ass.
Yeah, Liberty City, it's my virtual home,
you dis the LC, I'll drop a nine in your dome.
I got the PE pumping on the MP3,
Yo it's G to the T to the A to the 3.

Trash Talk
Yo Doomsday, you ever notice how the old ladies in this town,
never hesitate to throw down?
You knock one of them down they get right up again.
Those are some hardcore grandma's!

Verse 2
Sometimes I sit in my car and just listen to Laslo,
rock the chatterbox with the serious flow.
Then I gotta get getting while the getting's still good,
so I take a quick spin to 8-Balls in Harwood.
The car don't make it on account of mafiosos,
hood in flames, I'm hoofing past the po-po.
Sure it's so slow, still it appeals to Hawking,
LC be the only place where I be walking.

Taxi cab missions, got old fast,
if I want Crazy Taxi I'll dust-off my DreamCast.
I'm all about crime all the motherlovin time,
only pausing from my mayhem to bust a dope rhyme.
Driving scary like a crazed Hally Berry,
got a job to do and no time to tarry,
I got the PE pumping on the MP3,
Yo it's G to the T to the A to the 3.

Trash Talk
Oh yeah, that's right gta3.
It's about time somebody made a videogame out of my life.
Yo doom take us out of here.

My advice, buy Omikron: The Nomad Soul.

It's a cheap game, around $5 if you find the right place, but it is huge, slightly raunchy(thinks of the add for Bio-Mechanical penis implants, and the time you have sex with your clothes on), very compelling, and has David Bowie in it.

Then you can spend the rest of your money on a different game that is more widley accepted.

If you're a fan of Doom, you should go buy Serious Sam. A worthy ten bucks for any member of the Doom generation.

But, barring that, you can't go wrong with Half-Life. It is a wonderfully brilliant single-player game the first go-round and its sequels are entertaining as hell.

Bear in mind that while everyone is mentioning how widely it is supported by the internet community, if you're not a FPS player, you won't enjoy playing with people online. It can be frustrating for a number of reasons (both the 'many people can be a team-killer/cheater' reason and the 'all the decent players know all the tricks and will be unkind to a new learner' reason).

Civ 3 is a good but a flawed combat system keeps it from being great. However it is just as adictive as its ancestors.

Sim City 4 has gone gold and is supposed to be in stores by Jan 14th. I did not care for Sim City 3 at all, but this one might be worth a look.

And Lo and behold for he said onto them, Thy Buying Desison is solved! Thou shall buyith Half-Life Platnium Pack for the Reasons I shall give onto you.

Reason 1 for buying Yeah Half-Life Pack is simple, Thou must know that Half-Life was the first and greatest FPS to break the Doom cycle of hoards of mindless enemies, It has AI that was not toped for TWO YEARS and only then by Unreal Tourment! Being that Tourment has yet to be supassed except by itself it can be said that Half-Life has the second greatist AI and it is over five years old!

Reason two is the extras that yonder Half-Life Provides, The game itself shall take you a MEAR Fifteen to twenty four hourse to finish, However its two Add-ons, Shall giveth thee an extra nineteen hours agian opon that

And we have yet to download the extras

For you see buying Half-Life not only nets you The Single Player Experance to be remeber Half-Life but!
(All extras are called "Mods FYI)

The Gritty and dirt World War II
DAY OF DEFEAT!

The sometimes tense but classic Real life esk Shooter
COUNTER-STRIKE

The intresting and diffrent fighting game
DBZ:Earth Special Forces

The John Woo based Gunfighting Game
Action Half-Life!

The best Zombie Stomping ever
They Hunger... SERIES(Yep 3 whole games, this is Single Player only FYI)

The Orgional and still Chamipon(maybe not ;) ) Flag Capping game
Team Fortress Classic!

And thats just off the top of my head, there are many more good 2-4 Hour Mods out there, I have played no game more, Nor enjoy any game more than I have Half-Life

Civ3 is a good game that I'll always go back to playing (unless/until they make a Civ4) I wouldn't play it online though. I don't think it's needed it with the challenging AI.

GTA3 was a great game on playstation and I heard that it's just as good on the pc the only difference being the graphics being a bit better on the pc, easier to aim to shoot but harder to drive with the key board. It is also a long game and even after you're done with it you will probably go back to start from the beginning.

Halflife. I don't know much about it I only got Counter-Strike but that alone is a great game to play online. Not much fun playing alone but you'll probably be playing it for a long time to come.

I get GTA3 cause I already got Civ3 and Counterstrike (don't want to get greedy). If I didn't have any of them I'd wouldn't be able to choose and I'll be at the store for hours looking at the boxes trying to choose asking other peoples opinion that in actuallity has no impact on what I'll buy.

Well I bought Half-Life Plat pack yesterday. Been playing it. I just escaped the helicopter in Half-life and just got the machine gun in Opposing forces, haven't tried Team Fortress or Blue Shift yet, and I can't get Counter Strike to work, it won't auto update and I can't figure out which download to get off the site. And I have the dial up problem so if it's over 30 megs its gonna be an overnight download.

Its gonna be awhile, the avarage good HL mod weighs in at around 120 Megs but frankly its worth every second for nearly all of them
