Listen to the lyrics again. He's driven mad by the infinity of space, jumps out of his capsule and flies off into the void, eventually dying of asphyxiation.

My contribution to a WEIRD debate

Well, I'm guessing that the luckless Major was dead, as I suspect that 'Ashes to Ashes' was about his funeral.

The comment about "We know Major Tom's a junkie" in 'Ashes' probably indicates that his death was somehow related to substance abuse. Additionally, there was a hardware problem on Major Tom's ship or EVA suit on top of any mental/emotional problems. In 'Space Oddity' the CAPCOM says: "Your circuit's dead, The're something wrong!"

Major Tom: Cause of death: Asphyxia after jumping into space in a defective EVA suit whilst on a Bad Trip. :P

I view ashes to ashes as more of, Major Tom is coming back, and people don't want to accept him back as a hero.

And remeber after your circuit's dead, there's something wrong" there are lines which come from Major Tom.

Nothing about drugs. He just decided not to go home.

I interpretted it as him pulling his vital sign monitors out (which would cause mission control to read his as dead). He hears this on his radio, but he's so illucid that it blends in with his own mumbling thoughts.

I like Major Tom but Suffragette City is a close second for my favorite Bowie songs.
Words and music by David Bowie.
Lyrics

Hey man, oh leave me alone you know
Hey man, oh Henry, get off the phone, I gotta
Hey man, I gotta straighten my face
This mellow thighed chick just put my spine out of place

Hey man, my schooldays insane
Hey man, my work's down the drain
Hey man, well she's a total blam-blam
She said she had to squeeze it but she... then she...

(CHORUS)
Oh don't lean on me man, cause you can't afford the ticket
I'm back on Suffragette City
Oh don't lean on me man
Cause you ain't got time to check it
You know my Suffragette City
Is outta sight...she's all right

Hey man, Henry, don't be unkind, go away
Hey man, I can't take you this time, no way
Hey man, droogie don't crash here
There's only room for one and here she comes, here she comes

CHORUS

Oh hit me!

CHORUS

A Suffragette City, a Suffragette City
I'm back on Suffragette City, I'm back on Suffragette City
Ooo, Sufraggete city, ooo, Suffragette City
Oooh-how, Sufragette City, oooh-how, Sufragette City, oooh-how
Sufragette

Ohhh, Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am!

A Suffragette City, a Suffragette City
Quite all right
A Suffragette City
Too fine
A Suffragette City, ooh, a Sufragette City
Oh, my Sufragette City, oh my Suffragette City
Oh, Suffragette
Suffragette!

I don't think so. The full lyric is:
"Ground control to Major Tom,
Your curcuit's dead,
there's something wrong!"
It is possible that he is adding their signals into his own muddled thoughts, but I don't really think so.

The full lyrics are though:
Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you....

"Here am I floating round my tin can
Far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do."

That last part is definetly from the good Major, and not from ground control.

Yes, but Bowie definately changes voices in between the 'hear me' bit and the Major's chorus. I think it is supposed to be a different speaker.

I just always presumed that Major Tom's mission was going great and he was looking around and then something went wrong that he couldn't fix or do anything about. So, knowing he was going to buy it he decided to enjoy what he could.
