DOS games on Win XP

I recently got my hands on Crusader: No Remorse and Crusader: No Regret. I last played these TOTAL CLASSICS back in 1996/7 respectively, and understandably I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms.

Anyway I can get these to run on XP?

Try patching it fully up to date. DOS games fully work (ok almost: Wolf3D doesn't like my sound card) here on my ship.

Better yet, set up a secondary OS on another HDD. Win98SE should work.

Nope.....BZZZZZZT

Doesn't work.

You need a naitive DOS 6.22 environment.

I've not had many problems with the XP VDMS...what have you tried so far? Have you edited the settings on the application (e.g. right-click -> properties) and fiddled around with it?

I had the same problem with the same games, actually. Also with some Lucasarts classics like Sam and Max Hit The Road.

I've gone so far as to email people asking how to play it in windows 2000/XP - and there's no way I can find.

There is, if you look hard enough, a patch for the second of the 'crusader' games that was supposed to help, but I couldn't find it.

You are aware that Win98 has DOS 7 right? *cough* "RESTART IN DOS MODE" */cough*

DOS 7 is not DOS 6.22, which is what these games were designed for.....

You need QEMM to actually get the 620k of free conventional memory
needed to run some of these programs, and QEMM works best with 6.22

Funny, I've never had any trouble playing DOS games when I had Win98. (or 95 for that matter)

Funnier, I've never had any trouble running DOS anything on Win2K. This thing'll run literally any EXE I can throw at it. :D

I have a Win98SE machine in my brother's room- I successfully got the original System Shock, the original DOS X-COMs to run on it- so maybe I'll just try it on there eh?

I tried fiddling around with the properties on the dos shortcuts to the exe files, no dice.

I was getting frigging General Protection Faults.

Your best bet is to either dual boot or run something along the lines of VMWare.

Emulates other OSs. I used to once to emulate MacX for something...

I spent tonight trying to get all the X-Com series to work under XP....three sets of patches and giving up on ever having sound in them and I'm almost there....

Isnt backwards compatability wonderful?

Keevan.

Somehow I don't think praying to a dead wise man (who isn't black, but probably native Palestinian stock anyway) will help in this matter.

FUCKEN FUCKETY FUCK DOUBLE FUCK!

Tried it on the Win98SE machine, STILL doesnt' work!

I even restarted in MS-DOS mode, for a second it looked like working, I even saw the old loading screen that I remember from 6 years ago, and then the whole computer just fucking locked up ...

Let's just add Fallout 1 to the mix. There's a step-by-step how-to on the
Interplay boards and I STILL can't get it to run.

And I hartily recommend the second OS option to those who actually have
hardware ancient enough to have DOS drivers. Which, unfortunately, no longer includes me.

And Shep- it does NOT have to be 6.22, I happily ran those games (and all others) on IBM DOS 7 and 2000.
Neither do you need QUEMM for the memory even with 6.22, although I will
admit that MemMaker will NEVER get you enough free memory (hell, that tool regularly managed to optimize 2 K
of lower memory right out of existence).
Actually, the only use I ever found for QUEMM was that little utility that came with it for mapping memory.

And if anybody ever got MAX running under XP in Windows mode PLEASE tell!!!!

Wow, you discovered something that I discovered YEARS ago.

Crusader does NOT like MS DOS 7. You need MS DOS 6.22 to get it
to run.

Chances are its objecting more to modern hardware than to DOS 7. DOS 7 isn't all that different from DOS 6.22 but modern sound and video boards have very little in common with the hardware we used to use in the DOS daze. Even if you can get DOS 6.x to boot and see--and not destroy--the contents of your hard drive the game might not run anyway.

Note:DOS 6 cannot read VFAT, FAT32, NTFS, or cope with hard drives larger than 8GB. Attempting to use DOS 6 on a drive with any of the above characteristics could result in catastrophic data loss. You've been warned.

Anyone tried freedos?

Careful with FreeDOS. At one point it had a design 'feature' (read: flaw) in that it would corrupt the contents of IDE HDDs larger than 504MB. I assume this problem has been fixed by now but I'm not certain. Worse yet, the original response of the FreeDOS people to this issue was eyebrow raising ("It's not our fault. Don't install FreeDOS on large hard drive.") to say the least.

*looks at Windows 2000 dual boot setup that he's been using for a while....*

Gee, it works.......Aren't partitions great?
