Well, my father has recently acquired a 2.4 GHz laptop, and I'm wondering what kind of peripherals and software he should get. If it were for me, I'd obviously say porn, PC games and internet access, but I'd like to be serious for once.

Any suggestions?

Hey ESB how is training going?

I have a NeatGear Wireless Access Point and a Wireless 802.11b PCMCIA card for my Thinkpad. This lets me use my laptop anywhere in the house. It is nice if I wanna browse SD.net while someonelse uses the main compter or if I wanna watch tv at the same time.

My laptop does have an internal modem, so I dont need any add on for that. I use a Xircom 10/100 NIC card for standard ethernet access.

I have something called a Bullet Drive. I use it mainly to help others recover data from their laptops. Basically it is a small shell with a PCMCIA adapter. I cant take the hard drive out of your laptop, stick it in my bullet drive. Then hook my bullet drive to my laptop and your drive will show up in Windows as just a regular hard drive. Pretty usefull if yours cant boot and you need to recover data. Also usefull for backing up data now and then.

One thing I would like to get is a USB memory card reader for my digital camera. My camera uses a serial cable to xfer pictures. Really slow!

Useful? How about a few of the Memeorex 512 Meg Flash USB Flash Drives, Dead useful, Also a Bluetooth ready wireless adapater, preferbly from 3COM

Also some good solid headphones, an extra battery and possible one of those "Desk" Batterys which add about an extra 6 Pounds but slip underneath the laptop and provide a good solid nine hours of battery life(And make your computer think its pluged into AC so it will be running at full-speed)

Get one that works.

Take that asshole!

Listen to Bean. if your gonna get a laptop make sure it's useful. If your looking for brands, then I guess it depends on who you talk to.

If you're going to go WLAN, get a Cisco Aironet 350 or Agere Orinoco series card - they're the best in the industry.

Koss's PortaPro or SportaPro are excellent headphones for portable use.

Make sure it has a cubic buttload of USB ports and a adapter for a CRT monitor. LCDs are nice for Word or Excel, but shitty for important things like Quake 3, UT, CounterStrike, etc.
