Favourite Comic Characters/groups

by Rob Wilson
In no particular order, but grouped by Publisher/comic
2000AD
Rogue Trooper, Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Robo-hunter (the early stuff), Ace Garp trucking Co., ABC Warriors (spread the word), Nemesis (Be Pure, Be Vigilant, behave), Slaine (before Mills ruined it), Judge Anderson.
Marvel
Excaliber (Alan Davis era), Captain Britain, early Spiderman (though Apparently the Ultimate stuff is worth looking at), Thor (when he had the beard), Wolverine (before he was whored out to every comic they published), Jubilee, Beast, Kitty pryde, Collossus, Rogue, nightcrawler, Hulk (peter David years), X-factor (Peter David years), Daredevil, Black Panther, Early Iron Man, She-hulk, Transformers, Wade Wilson (also people are prodding me to read Spider-girl and Captain marvell).
DC
Batman (Grant/wagner), JLI/JLE (very silly), Etrigan, Sandman, L.E.G.I.O.N., Legionnaires, Flash, John Constantine, Swamp thing (original run). Suicide Squad (poor captian boomerang
), Ambush Bug. I also picked up 2 issues of Batgirl in Switzerland last year - very interesting.
Others
Jenny Sparks (fuck it, all the Authority), Spider Jerusalem, Queen & Country (though parts made me laugh out loud), Boy genius, Planetary.
And probably half-a-dozen more that I can't think of right now. I would do webcomics but I don't feel like posting 40+ links so i'll leave it for another topic. So what about you lot (expecting a 40MB list from Colin
)?
Does whatever a Spider can...

Marvel
Hulk(Peter David run), X-Men(Claremont/Byrne run), Captain America(Mark Waid first run), Captain Marvel(Peter David run), Daredevil(Frank miller...up till around issue 300), Punisher(Ennis)...Spiderman(pre-clone/ Maximum Carnage saga)
DC
Batman, Nightwing, Robin(dixon run), JLA(Morrison run), JLE, JLI, Aquaman(PD run), Lucifer, Sandman, Preacher(god that was a fun book), Hitman, JSA, Starman, Hawkman, Flash(waid Run), Green Lantern, Y the last man
Most of Alan Moore's recent works in Image...as well as Ennis' new stuff.
[rant]I would've said Spiderman, seriously was my favorite and still is favorite character...but sorry what Marvel has done to him is wring him through a shtter and what they've done to the X-men has been nearly as bad...sorry ret-conning is something I still despise about Marvel[/rant]
Some other people I check out are Brubaker and Rucka...as well as Ostrander and a couple other writers. For me I like heroes...but a good story is a good story...there's probably a slew of stuff I've completely missed and will come back to me at some bad time

The Sandman is DC? I can't get that sorted in my head somehow...

Actually Sandman... as well as Hellblazer(another very good title) and Swamp Thing is what convinced DC to create the imprint the call Vertigo.

It depends on which Sandman you're talking about. The goth looking version that deals with dreams is DC. The version that turns into sand and fights with Spiderman is Marvel. I think DC had a geeky looking version for the dream thing a long time ago as well.

Told you I'd forget some
, Also Lobo (the specials). And how the fuck I forgot Top 10 is beyond me!
I stopped collecting American comics a while ago (basically the time of the X-men/Spiderman titles explosion) and so I missed a few, but friends would prod me and tell me to check out certain ones - hence Top 10, League of Amazing Gentlemen, Queen and Country Etc.

Yeah a few people tell me to check out Rucka (so perhaps I should
) and also someone called Bendis/bendas/bendus (something like that).

Actually three people have adopted the name Sandman.
Marvel's is a radioactive villain who's body comprises of the stuff.
DC's is both a Wesley Dodds(a 40's mystery man who adopted said name because actually he would recieve prophetic dreams), and then there's Sandman itself aka Morpheus...now Daniel...who takes up the mantle after the elder one died
But usually when one comments Sandman...usually refers to the Morpheus incarnation.

PLus DC had The Sandman in the JSA who used the real Sandmans (gaimans) sand to fight crime. Confused? You will be i this weeks episode of Sandman.

All some really good stuff...I'm hoping you've read Watchmen?
Also yes...forgot Lobo(d'oh!)
His latest special with him vs Hitman was classic...in so many ways

Rucka has a nice gritty detective stylings...Bendis is good but at times...eh, I do not see why he is that spectacular...talent yes...as good as some tout him to be, no.

Most of them are, from the imprint Vertigo. Anything with Morphues the King of Dreams and his siblings (Death, Delerium, Delight, Destiny etc) were origanlly printed in his DC comic Sandman.

Have I read Watchmen? Do Bears shit in the wood? You'll be asking me if I've read The Dark knight Returns next.
The last Lobo I read was either Unamerican Gladiators or the Xmas Special (Kris 'Slasher' Kringle), or maybe it was the Comic Convention special? Funny stuff though.

BWAHAHAHAHA...sorry, just something I ask anyone who reads comics.
But yeah Lobo went blech for a while and they gave Ennis a one shot where Lobo and Hitman go at it, and aside the antics of Lobo ripping many bastiches apart...how Tommy(hitman) get out of the shit he dove into was classic.
Sorry the Main Man get...well just say reamed in a whole different way...Ennis' sense of humor is sick for a better lack of a word...good but sick

I have Faust: Love of the Damned Act 7 and it is pretty twisted. It also says that it is the "rebel edition" whatever that means.

How did I forget Deathlok? Fuck that, how did I forget Marshall Law (I'm a hero hunter. I hunt heroes - haven't found any yet. See a Cape, Kill a Cape) everytime someone mentions Punisher I just see the Persecutors origin story and I burst out laughing.
Absolom Daak and Doctor Who were Marvel UK (as was the original Warwolves, the Special Executive and Shade the Gallifreyan Assassin)not 2000ad - though it can be dificult to picture there being any other comic in the UK other than the Galaxy's Greatest.
Hitman is part of the Batman Family? I thought he was an IRA shitwit.

Of course if you really want to fuck with someone, ask them to name the EC characters the Watchmen are based on.

No, He's an IRA shitwit, that got too hot for him in Ireland, so he started working for Gotham's Irish Mob. (Where he first appeared in Batman), But he still lives in the US. in Gotham's Chinatown/Little Ireland district (Yes, it's the same section of real estate)
Which could explain why Batman got really pissed off when the SAS "Special Branch" came after him. The bat has a territory problem that would put most wolves to shame.

by Ghost Rider
Yeah...he's located in Gotham City...so like everything in Gotham they basically locked him up with the Bat familiy(though he did puke on Bat's cape
)

Good one...one that I actually know and put down somewhere.
Got into some interesting debates on this stuff...but with enough tracking down got them...I think.(ozy being the only one I have some trouble pegging)
And yes Bear...Bats has some SERIOUS issues regarding territory...I mean wolves who piss acid aren't as nasty as he is for anyone entering his 'city'
