Gaming Rant

Okay, this is a quick rant. It's about a game. A video game. A video game that could spell certain doom for the geometrically proportioned Nintendo system. The Legend of Zelda. That's right folks. Now everyone has started dying down about thier misconceptions. However, this one just struck me. I can say almost 100% of those that are already saying that the new Zelda will not be good, is because of, guess what, the graphics. What the fuck? First off, cell shading is badder than hell. It's not totally for the cell shading. No. It's because it looks to kiddy. What the fuck, yet again? Kiddy eh?
The Legend of Zelda-NES
He was squat and square. He was a kid with a WOODEN sword!
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past-SNES
Excuse me? Pink hair? Maybe my TV is just fucked.
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening-Gameboy
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX-Gameboy Color
A giant WHALE! That was ASLEEP!
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask -N64
Duku Link.
Give me a break will ya. Why does everyone look to A Link to the Past as the end all of video games? Because of it's superior gameplay, story and general all around bad ass'edness. I don't recall anyone on here being to negative towards the new look. (Not that fucking new though.) But really, for those of you who are still non believers, why? Do graphics rule the day? If so, then that means games like Mario, Metroid, Sonic, and many other classics are utter shit when compared to games like Dead or Alive Extreme Volley Ball. Let's get real. Graphics do not make the game. They play a part in the overall experience.
This rant had to go somewhere. It's going to start being relocated to other boards. Heh.

...so, are you for or against the new Zelda, which I just pre-ordered at FuncoLand?

The first Zelda game I ever bought was for N64- which was incidentally the first Nintendo system I ever owned. I bought the N64 purely for Goldeneye- and for the life of me the only two games worth a damn on that POS system was Goldeneye and (surprise!) Perfect Dark. The rest sucked. Including Zelda- wtf do people see in this cutesy exercise in tedium?
I now have a Gamecube. It fucking kicks ass. Resident Evil remake, Eternal Darkness, Rogue Leader, these are classic games (still waiting for Metroid to be released).

Which N64 Zelda did you play? I enjoyed them both.

What? No love for Konker's Bad Fur Day? That game deserves a spot in the Holy Trinity of N64 games (the two you mentioned, and BFD). You're right though, every thing else just doesn't measure up.

My problem with where Legend of Zelda has been going is precisely that. It started out as an action adventure game for teens or adults or at least all the non-gameboy games were. For all the funny touchs it wasn't aimed at the younger kids market. It had a solid and serious story to it. It was that way through A Link to the Past. And while I miss the old overhead view, I liked Ocarina of Time. It had the same great combination of story and fun.
Majora's Mask however went in a direction I'm not happy about. It got a little too cute and too little story. In short it was aimed at kids, the same little kids the last few marios have been. It lost something then. It was still fun but not as much as it was. And so far the trend show's no sign of stopping and I refuse to buy a GambeCube because of that.

I'll probably be getting the new Zelda game, and it's probably going to be a great, innovative game, but I'd probably find it more appealing if it wasn't cel-shaded. I don't like cel-shading, and I'm pretty sure Nintendo turned away many fans by making that decision.

Graphics aren't everything but in these days you do expect some things from a game.

I see good graphics as an extra "perk." If the game has good storyline and gameplay I like it.
Teh uthor deh, I was playing Diablo: LoD and somebody made the comment that D3 "had better be in 3d." So what if it isn't? D1 and D2 are awsome!
I enjoyed all the Zelda games with passion. It is dumb to judge how good a game is by it's graphics.
Take FF7 for example. If you compare it's graphics to 10, it's inferior. But I think 7 is better than 10 because of storyline and battlesystem.
I do enjoy good graphics but it's not what I go by.

Wow, a kid with a brain... at least about games. Nice job, jodathalas.

I have found all of the FFs past 7 to be wretched. I don't like the real-like characters. It's not Final Fantasy! FF3 (FF6) is my favorite. Great storyline, great characters, great music... it's wonderful.

YES! I hate those people who dis zelda because of the cell shading, that one pic was pretty bad over all, but several the the newer ones are good. This is one of the mose agressive links ever, his spin attack in this game made me and my friend, in unison shout "DUDE, SWEET!" From those that have played the import, they love the game, AND CAN'T EVEN MAKE OUT THE STORY!
The whole reason for the Cel Shading is because Myomoto(the guy responsible for many other great nintendo games) created Link as a child. Their was a small cave near his house, he had always been afraid to go in it, until one rainy night, when he set out with nothing but a lamp...
So ofcourse in his mind Link has always been cartoonish, as seen in the mosters doing the little, "shit I'm dead dance" before falling into a pit(which makes a comeback in The Wind Waker). He made Link like that in OoT because he was pretty much forced to by Nintendo, and he had nothing to do with Majora's Mask(which is pretty obvious, it broke the "each game takes place earlier in time than the previous" trend that make me unsure if he was involved in Link's Awakening.(the first Zelda is the final last one chronologicly)
I for one can wait til this game comes back.

The gameboy games stay VERY true to the gameplay of the Zelda series. They are top down, and involve exploring and traveling over intense action sequences.
For all the funny touchs it wasn't aimed at the younger kids market. It had a solid and serious story to it. It was that way through A Link to the Past.
A Link to the Past for me seemed like it had more kiddie touches than the other Zelda's. Not as much as Link's Awakening, but more than the first two, and against Ocharina of Time.
And while I miss the old overhead view, I liked Ocarina of Time.
No doubt about it. It was beautiful. Subsequently, it was half the reason I bought the N64, after heavily dogging the shit out of it. (The other half was Rogue Squadron. Where news of that hit my eye when my EGM with a huge fucking X-Wing on the cover came in the mail.)
It had the same great combination of story and fun.
The story was hella engrossing. Especially after spending days as Link and then battling in the great tree. Only to learn your not a true elf, but a child orphaned by the forces of Ganondorf.
Majora's Mask however went in a direction I'm not happy about.
It could have been different, but there is not one thing I dislike about Majora's Mask. It is to OoT what LA was to LttP.
It got a little too cute and too little story. In short it was aimed at kids, the same little kids the last few marios have been.
I can see where it may have been aimed a kids more, however it seems like they really just had a GREAT idea for a Zelda game but it didn't fit the timeline.
It lost something then. It was still fun but not as much as it was. And so far the trend show's no sign of stopping and I refuse to buy a GambeCube because of that.
You might as well shit and fall backwards in it. Metroid alone is worth the $150 price tag. Not to mention Rogue Squadron II, Resident Evil (which I always hated the series.), Super Smash Brothers Melee and there's a host more out there that are great titles for the system. I fear it is going to go the way of the Dreamcast. What a shame, I remember the console wars during the 16bit era.

Pay attention Dalton. I put my money down quickly. I usually try to pre buy games, but I heard that they are putting out OoT and Ura Zelda (is it Ura, how the fuck do they say that shit) with a $15 pre buy. I can pick up those goodies in Feb before paying off the game itself. But in short, yes, I have ALWAYS been for it. I loved the new look and thought it really as a Zelda feel to it.

You should have gotten the following games for the N64:
Shadows of the Empire
Rogue Squadron
Battle for Naboo
Judging from the games you mentioned (GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader), it seems as though these games would have been right up your alley. I'm assuming you didn't play them, because you said all other N64 games sucked. You haven't played them then. They are jolly good games that nobody can deny...
And Perfect Dark is the best N64 game ever. I hope they make a sequel for GC.

Borrowed it off a friend. Loved it.
Rogue Squadron
Had it on PC. Again, loved it.
Battle for Naboo
Is that Starfighter?

I bashed the N64 early in it's life, because it had crappy games there were generally $10-$15 more than PSX and Saturn games, for the main reason because they were still on cartridges. Not to mention the graphics on most of the games sucked. However, as mentioned, Shadows of the Empire, Super Smash Brothers, Kirby, the Mario Party titles and a slew of others were actually quite decent.
As far as Perfect Dark Zero. Rare works for X-Box kids. Last I heard, if PD hits a console it will be Microsoft's unit of measures. (Since the controller ways a metric ton!!!)

I've got that on the NES. I used to play it early on Sunday mornings. But I sleep all the way through the day now. It's a long ass game man. I can't be even 25% of the way done.
