election assembly

(note: this is just a rant)

I was running for ASB president of my school, and yesterday we had to give our speeches and/or skits. The assembly was horribly self-absorbed, perhaps the worst one in years, and the teachers later complained to me that I had the best speech of the bunch. I was just presenting my leadership experience, yet the others shamelessly presented themselves in narcisstic skits and stupid dances and then chanted "Vote for me". I rolled my eyes throughout this stupid assembly before and after I gave my speech.

In the few hours after the assembly, people contragulated me, gave me the thumbs up, and talked to me about how moronic the other candidates were (4 of them even got suspended, 2 for letting a rat out on the floor and one for talking about PISSING IN HIS PANTS for the whole fucking speech!) Teachers patted me on the back, and told me how much better I was than the rest of them.

I went home thinking I would win, with the kind of feedback I had received.

When I returned to school the next morning, the ASB advisor informed me that someone else had won. His speech and skit were a bit better than the rest, but he still had acted stupid (including dressing a few senior girls in prom dresses and marching them over the floor. My English teacher was hugely offended by this, taking it as objectification of women.) I accepted the loss stotically, but inside I roiled. How could I have lost to a bunch of stupid people?

:x

I think you will find the real world to be more suiting.

Oh, I forgot about that. The fourth got into an argument with another candidate IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FLOOR!

Life Lesson #38,671.9, subsection A, paragraph 6: All of high school is a giant popularity contest, with "popularity" based on factors that have no relevance in the real world. Your opponent probably had this election locked up from the beginning because his friends and the crowd of suck-ups who voted for him to try to get into his inner circle.

Sex sells and real politics is far more about image and conning the public than offering real leadership.

Consider this your introduction to the real world. If you want to get anywhere in politics or in life, make like Shrub and market yourself to the lowest common denominator.

You don't want to be in a senior position in High school. None of your employers will care and you'll be hated by the non-posse crowd.

Wait til uni, then run for Council, be a part time oficer then take a Sabbatical.
