I need to name a character
For my "First Emperor" story I'm not too happy with my main character's name. Right now he's "Otho Niccoletti", but I'd like a better last name. A few things:
1. He comes from a quasi-roman society, with Latin names.
2. His paternal lineage is Italian.
3. Its the future, so spelling can be a bit different, but not really different.
4. Please don't tell me to call him "stink-butt".
5. He's a badass anti-hero guy.
Thanks for your time.

CaptainChewbacca, does this mean you'll change the whole Niccoletti family? Ah...by the way, I know I've bugged you, but as you've said (for very good reasons) that you can't post any more...you will tell us all when you're published, right?
Hmm...Otho Niccoletti, personally I've liked that name...but you're looking for a change. I do hope you keep the nickname of Duke, that is what I really remember him as. Well I do know that the Romans often had two names, one of which was a family name and the other honorary: (Manlius Capitolinus--Manlius was his family name, meaning salvation, and he was giving the name Capitolinus for saving the capitol, this was apparently tradition if you did something important for Rome--thanks to my Machiavelli class and his Discourses on Livy for that, ) Assuming that you're still keeping with the Scattered Earth timeline I got from the TrekBBS FanFic forum a while back...Perhaps the man you named Arcturus Niccoletti there could have a name given to him in honor of his accomplishments in the Survivors War and he passes this on to his children? He held the line against a counterattack...Some variation on defender? Or valiant? My Latin is nonexistant so this is as far as I can go....let me know what you think, if any of these ideas are any good. I hope I can be of help.

Hey Black Wolf, surprised to see you here.
Roman naming conventions were such that you had your own name (Praenomen) for friends and family, a family name (nomen) by which you were called, your father's name to further denote yourself, and there were distinctions that came with accomplishment and rank (agnomen), like Centurion for a military officer or Imperator for conqueror. agnomens were often inherited to denote a significant family within a clan. But, we balance this with 20th century naming conventions.
Arcturus was Imperator Arcturus Niccoletti before he became a traitor, Proditor. Duke's full name is actually:
Duke Otho Angelius Marcus Arcturus Niccoletti Proditor, domo Nova Manhattan.
Duke- Rank
Otho- Name (nomen)
Angelius- Family name (cognomen)
Marcus- Father (patronimicus)
Arcturus- Grandfather
Niccoletti- Clan Name
Proditor- Traitor, from his grandfather (cognomen)
domo Nova Manhattan- Place of residence
Mostly, though, I want to change Niccoletti. He goes by "Otho Niccoletti" usually, for his praenomen and clan name. He'd use Angelius but he's just about the last of his clan, and you gotta distinguish it. I was looking to change "Niccoletti".

I came hear after a google search turned up mention of HappyTarget's Terran Empire story. Okay, I understand your naming system now, looks like you have really put quite a bit of thought into it...Hmmm...I'll try to think of some names...
Machiavelli
Bonachelli
Venetti
Ghiradelli
I'll try to think of more later...this is all the pseudo-Italian I can think of now.

I was afraid of that. I just need a name, not an obvious label like "Dark Father"
