Here, let me write a Culture vs SW fic, just for you.
One upon a time, there was a happy little Culture drone, named Admiral Valdemar. One day, while merrily going on his way, he found a wormhole that led to to a galaxy far, far away. Always wanting to explore, he went through the wormhole, but found a really mean empire and other hostile forces. Five minutes later, he came back out of the wormhole, leaving that galaxy a burning ruin. He then wandered off, hoping to find a decent donut shop.
The End.
What ya thank?

I would think an outline would like the following:
(1) Culture Minds discover a means of travelling to another universe, for reasons not explained they are limited to accessing only one universe. They are incredibly pleased by this, since the Culture has been wanting to do this for a while.
(2) Culture initiates contact with SW-Universe. Proceeds to manipulate the fuck out of the SW-Universe for a few generations to get things right.
(3) A few problems emerge during this period, forcing Special Circumstances to grab poor Culture citizens or mercs, who the Minds calculated are ideal for the job, and they are sent out on grueling missions that almost kill them and scar them psychologically just so that the Culture can avoid some horrible outcome.
(4) Repeat (3) as much as necessary.

The really interesting way to do that, Crom, would be to set it in such a way that there are no changes whatsoever in the established SW universe. Essentially, they bite off more than they can chew in trying to produce change in an entire galaxy without being noticed. Or, they only go for smaller scale efforts, so there's no reason to think that there'd be noticible changes anyway. It's not like they've ever delt with anything on this scale before (though admittedly I've only read a few books), though of course the tech disparity does make a big difference.
Essentially, writing a behind-the-scenes fanfic rather than a typical versus. If I were doing it, I wouldn't spend too much time setting up situations where my characters are in or cause scenes from the films or books, but I would
One particularly interesting bit is that droids are so commonplace that there shouldn't be any problem getting a drone just about wherever you want it, outside of perhaps insertion.

Well, one of hte major problems with Culture/SW fanfics are the problems that the Culture have no where near the speeds of Star Wars and that the Culture is nowhere near the size of the SW galaxy (The Culture, in and of itself, only takes up a percentage point or four of the Milky Way Galaxy, and a couple dozen Core worlds out number the Culture people-wise. They only have the uber-firepower advantage, but it doesn't matter because they're only willing to use it defensively.

Err, could I get a check on the speeds? Numerical comparison, preferably.

Highest stated/recorded Culture speed was made by Sleeper Service in Excession, and reached a cruising speed of 235,000 times the speed of light, but only after changing most of it's mass into engine. The average Plate class (Sleeper's stated type of GSV) is stated to have a cruise speed of 104kl(kilolights), while Range classes have ~145kl. Superlifters and ROUs, however, can achieve speeds of ~200kl, but only for short bursts (it damages the engines)Alan Bolte wrote:Err, could I get a check on the speeds? Compared with SW, which has stated speeds up to of 3.5 million c, there is just a mite bit of discrepency.
Yes, it would be. But not necessary. The Moffs and Admirals and what not could very well be agents transplanted by Special Circumstances. The SC agents would blend in to the Galactic Empire and have access to their Hyperdrives, it not particularly necessarry for them to be transported by Culture ships, or atleast after the first leg or so of the trip.Mlenk wrote:Wouldn't it be pretty easy for the Culture to just reverse engineer SW hyperspace tech?Singular Quartet wrote:Well, one of hte major problems with Culture/SW fanfics are the problems that the Culture have no where near the speeds of Star Wars

Probably. Given the average abilities of a GSV, it wouldn't surprise me to see the average Culture ship with a hyperdrive on the inside of month or two of aquiring one. This, however, assumes that the Grid can be accessed within SW Hyperspace which is the Culture's primary power source, but they could also reverse engineer a hypermatter reactor or just build really big capaciters. The OUs might be pissed for a while, but they'll just have to hang around GSVs for fast transit.Mlenk wrote:Wouldn't it be pretty easy for the Culture to just reverse engineer SW hyperspace tech?Singular Quartet wrote:Well, one of hte major problems with Culture/SW fanfics are the problems that the Culture have no where near the speeds of Star Wars

Actually, the highest speed of a Culture Vessel is the Killing Time at a over a trillion C. However, it could mantain this speed for only a very short while and even using it for less than a tenth of a second resulted in severe engine degradition (it was limping around afterwords). The Cultures paranoia of safety seems to lead them to only use speeds that would cause no engine degredation at all and the only reason the killing time would do such an outragious thing is that it is an ROU noted for thier suicidal tendencies and it had to in order to beat the Pittance fleet.
So ~250 kilolights is the fastest a Culture vessel will cruise at, but they can do a lot faster.
