The Tankers aren't like modern Tankers, they're more like Liberty-ship size tankers, 20,000 tons displacement on the outside. Russia had to start seizing and/or convert hulls wherever possible once the Caspian Sea region became contested.

Since the Russian Storyline is Shep Driven(tm) it's safe to say there are approximately one gazzillion MBTs used by Russia. :P

Let's not forget that Russia is supplying most of Europe's oil in this timeline,
and the Caspian region is getting contested. I would imagine the Russians
want to have a steady flow of oil in case the Caspian oil fields get wasted.

I don't think the US would have any Destroyer Escorts in 1940. They simply do not make sense to build that early, espically not in any numbers. Emphasis prewar would by far be on actual destroyers to counter Japans vast strength in the Pacific, the Battle of the Atlantic doesn't even exist at this point in the TL.

He'd be cracking if it wasn't for others constantly buggering around with the
timeline.

<< OOC, Rush job, I wanted to get it done before I went on deployment. M'bye! >>

Part 12: Orders

[The Dixie Chicken, Houston, 12 May 1941]

"Honolulu in a month!" Keith shouted, holding up his beer. Gillis Held up his and cheered with the rest of the j.o.s from the Pensacola. Himself, Keith, and Magnusson had all recieved Orders in the last month, and they had made the ALLNAV. All three were now Lieutenants, junior grade. For Gillis, that meant he could go out with Amanda in uniform without feeling slightly silly. For everyone else, it just mean't more pay.

Amanda's hand touched his. " I wish you hadn't accepted those orders, Mike"

The group continued to chatter while the band on stage played. No one noticed Gillis' face droop. "Babe, I already told you, I'm not going to weasel out of orders. I'm not that kind of guy. We'll just have to...have to wait until you're up for orders. Then, it'll be just the two of us...walking down a beautiful beach in Maui."

"Between underways. Destroyers leave port a lot more than Crusiers do."

Gillis sighed. He had been assigned to the Destroyer-minesweeper Southard, Keith was going to the Moulton, while Magnusson was going to the Cruisier Manila, which was, of course, based in Subic Bay.

Captain Fox was leaving the ship as well, he was going to be the new CO of Naval Station, Corpus Christi. The base there was new, built to accomadate the large number of new ships entering the fleet. The Navy couldn't have any "Homeless" ships, after all.

"Listen, when you get your Orders you can wire me, then we can arrange for some leave togather."

"What do you have in mind?"

"Florida. I, uh, want to introduce you to the folks..." Gillis' voice trailed off. He had already met her parents, they lived in Sugarland.

"Florida? Sweetie, why do you want to fly all the way out there for leave?"

"I want my folks to meet the Girl I'm going to spend the rest of my life with."

Amanda's eyes widened. Her mouth opened...

"ATTENTION TO AWARD!!" Cmdr. Peuterschmit's voice boomed over everone. The band stopped playing and everyone watched him hold up a framed certificate.

"Skipper, can you come up here for a moment?"

Fox walked up front. Unlike most everyone else, he had came to the Hail and Farewell alone. Gillis had heard his wife had died a few year's back, and the only joy in his life now was his daughters. Almost a year with this man, and I don't know him that well at all, Gillis thought.

Peuterschmit cleared his throat.

"Know all ye present, this certficate of depreciation recognizes Bryant Augustine Fox, Captain, United States Naval Reserve for his service or lack there of as commanding Officer, USS Pensacola. During his tenure as CO, he singlehandedly pissed off one Army Brigadier General, ran over not one, but TWO whales while he had the conn, and demonstrated emergancy destruction while graciously using his own radio reciever as an example. In addition to the aforementioned accomplishments, he managed to, during a food shortage on the ship, eat a 5 lb hickory sausage that Lt. (j.g.) Magnusson had saved in the Wardroom. Captain Fox was well known for helping out his shipmates by not draining the coffee pot in the wardroom, rather, leaving enough for a quarter of a cup for the next guy. Captain Fox, your tour reflects a lack of credit on yourself and is hardly in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Navy. Fair winds and following seas." Peuterschmit held out his hand, the officers cheered.

Keith clapped his hands and turned back to Gillis. "Hey Mike, why do you think we didn't get a cert..." He noticed Mike and Amanda leaving.

"Hope he makes an honest woman out of her."
---------------------------

[Senior Battleline School, Johannesburg]

"Attention to Award!"

Junior Merarch Jan Vandevender stiffened. He looked ridiculously out of place in the line of five Domination Naval Officers. He had, by fall, the smallest frame of the males in the Class. Only the Female, Junior Mearch Alexandra Von Bruitt was smaller than him. A paragon of Spartan physique he was not. But there was no denying his intelligence, had recieved the highest marks in his class and thus first pick of the few open commands. Very shortly he would going on to take over the Helios, a heavy cruisier based in Algiers. The Mediterrean was a whole 'nother animal from the Caribbean. No way to play hide and seek there, especially now that he was a surface officer once more.

In fact, at the moment the Helios was in the Black Sea, supporting the ardously slow advance up from Tbillisi. Most of the caucaus has now firmly clean of regular Soviet Troops, but the hundreds (Thousands?) of fighters there had played Hell with supply lines. It was now widely believed that another, more secure way to Kiev would have to be found. It will be through Romania, Vandevender thought. It had to be.

Senior Chilliarch Van Pelt walked up to Vandevender. Vandevender stiffend slightly and saluted. Van Pelt returned the salute, said " congradulations on your successful completion of the school." and moved on. It wasn't much of a ceremony. That was fine for Vandevender, he hated ceremonies. Since Van Pelt had already told them they were free to go after his congradulations, Vandevender turned and left. He made it out the door of the Naval War College before he heard Von Bruitt's voice.

"Vandevender! Wait."

He slowed down but didn't stop. "Alexandra."

" You're taking the 1600 airship to Cairo, correct?"

"From the Military aerodrome, yes."

"Would you mine if I traveled with you?" Now Vandevender did stop.

There were now standing in front of the massive Gems and precious metels exchange. The building represented the beating financial heart of the Domination.

"Alexandra, It would no behoove your career to be consorting with me. I am a committed Christian."

"So?"

"Well...that was the point, really. I..." There was a screech of wheels and a lorry came pulling out of traffic very quickly indeed. Both Vandevender and VonBruitt turned and looked. The Lorry jumped the curb, and seemed to be heading for them. They took off running, and the Lorry continued, smashing into the glass doors of the exchange. Vandevender looked back just in time to see the explosion, right before th glass and debris ripped his face to shreds.
