Yuck, that thing is horrible. I understand wanting the nacelles directly on the hull Defiant style, but it's so horribly blocky that it doesn't appeal to me at all.montypython wrote:It's a bit too busy for me, a proper battleship should look a bit like this.

The ship has tubes aft for deploying tethered sensor pods and less armoured sensor arrays forward to cover those areas. If the enemy is attacking you from below in Space, you just roll the ship 90 degrees to point your broadside at them. You detect them through the non-armoured sensors just mentioned.Adrian Laguna wrote: Those are very good reasons, but it doesn't solve the apparent problem of the ship sitting between its own sensors and any targets directly "below" it.
I remember you saying that Taloraan warships carried mission specific pods that could be rapidly exchanged depending on operational needs. Where do those go?
As noted, on the ESII class they mask the sponson turrets, so they go at the ends of the midship sponsons. Because of that, they're usually missile pods which are fired and then dropped before battle.

A battleship need to be armoured and able to annihilate anything littler than another battleship, not to be beautiful. Earth Alliance destroyers (I'm wondering if they use this name as 'ship who destroy the enemy' or in naval sense) are very ugly, but they do their job annihilating anything they fought but Minbari ships.Steve wrote:Yuck, that thing is horrible. I'm just not sure it works for that. The main guns are forward-mounted like on the Defiant, but with a ship of significantly-greater mass. And I didn't notice the actual phaser strips.lord Martiya wrote:A battleship need to be armoured and able to annihilate anything littler than another battleship, not to be beautiful. To me, once you reach a certain size, turreted weapons are virtually a must.
Finally.... it's a friggin sci-fi setting. Asthetics actually are a potential consideration OOC.

Yes, but the original comment was over aesthetics, which is very weird to me, that someone could find that ship more aesthetically pleasing than the ESII, which has a certain baroque quality with its extremely long aspect ratio and lofty superstructures, which is somewhat reminiscent of Japanese wet-navy designs.lord Martiya wrote:A battleship need to be armoured and able to annihilate anything littler than another battleship, not to be beautiful. The ship design does have phaser strips, it is noted in the text that they are concealed in armored shrouds.Steve wrote: I'm just not sure it works for that. In addition, one doesn't need turrets if using an omnidirectional weapons array system, e.g, a golfball shaped battleship with the skin of the hull using a layered emitter system combined with a networked power conduit substructure for energy transfer.

If you have a particle weapon (and a phaser seems to be a particle weapon), longer is the accelerator, stronger is the damage on the enemy. See the Defiant: her emitters aren't bigger than the ones of the Odissey, but what emitters annihilated a battlebug in mere seconds, the bigger of the Odissey or the ones with a longer particle accelerator of the Defiant? A particle beam mounted in a barreled turret, besides the additional protection for the hull under the turret and the possibility of indipendent power for the turret (question: have ADN ships this capability?), has longer accelerator and is deadlier. An omnidirectional weapon system is a very good anti-fighter weapon, but for shipkilling a turret is better.

Not necessarily true, not if you use the entire diameter of the ship itself as a barrel, then any direction can be fired with maximum output.lord Martiya wrote:If you have a particle weapon (and a phaser seems to be a particle weapon), longer is the accelerator, stronger is the damage on the enemy. Then the entire ship would simply be a particle weapon. There would be no space in the hull physically there for anything else, including energy sources, and all of the acceleration tubes would criss-cross, which would be impossible.montypython wrote:Not necessarily true, not if you use the entire diameter of the ship itself as a barrel, then any direction can be fired with maximum output.lord Martiya wrote:If you have a particle weapon (and a phaser seems to be a particle weapon), longer is the accelerator, stronger is the damage on the enemy. The best way to describe this is to take a sphere ship, place its power core in the center of the ship, and have a series of secondary power cores beneath the outer hull layer of the ship. Circumferential conduits connect the secondaries to each other, with the central core connected to the secondaries. The energy weapon emitters on the ship hull are then connected to the secondary power systems. There is plenty of internal volume left for other systems and personnel, while power can be redirected as needed anywhere. The Duchess of Zeon wrote: Then the entire ship would simply be a particle weapon. This is conceptually no different than a capillary network connected to primary arteries and veins in a biological organism.
Another way to visualize this is to take a ball shaped like buckminsterfullerene and cover it will a spherical shell. The C atoms represent the secondary powerplants, while the ring represents the conduits. Place a power core in the center of the sphere, and connect the central core to several C atom points for primary conduits.

And where does the direct line accelerative distance come into play? Oh, that's right, there still isn't any. With a Taloran 1.5 GT particle cannon, the particles are accelerated down a 144 meter barrel during which they're continuously accelerated. It still generates enough recoil to send the gun barrel flying back up to 50 meters while vapourizing dozens of tonnes of organic supercoolant.montypython wrote:

Where in your scheme does the accelerative distance for the particles come to? The power conduits aren't accelerating particles, they're just supplying energy to the emitters, which are still stuck accelerating particles with absolutely no distance at all, which generates utterly enormous kinetic energy forces on the hull, comparable to being hit by the beam itself, and requires so much energy as to make a powerful beam unlikely. And off-axis firing is even more difficult. Even if the particles are being accelerated from the power core itself, you are still fixed firing down a few barrels, and those barrels are themselves fixed in place. No, turrets are simply better, particularly at long range.

The same scheme applies to the weapon systems, operating in conjunction with the power supply system, with the particle accelerator systems running in parallel to the power conduits. This means that an beam fired from one point on the hull originates from the opposite side of the ship. Thus, a sphere ship with a 1000m diameter hull will have a functional barrel of 1000m for all points of the hull.

Depending on the exact nature of the tech (i.e. whether synchrotron radiation or its equivalent is a relevant factor, a sphere ship could work quite well. The accelerators would be circular rings embedded just under the skin (at various angles), capable of emitting a beam from any of numerous ports along their length. The beam would emerge travelling almost parallel to the hull slope at the exit point. This means that with the right ring configuration, you could equip a ship with (say) twelve rings for overlapping 360 degree coverage and still fire all twelve beams on the same vector (e.g. directly forwards or aft) for 'alpha strikes'. You'd still have to maneuver the ship a bit to hit targets in an arbitary direction (at least with conventional EM tech; electromagnets on the emitter are only good for seconds of arc at best at these energies) but nowhere near as much as for fixed-direction axial emitters.

OH. Now this makes sense. You're talking about a particle accelerator integrated into the hull.
Christ, someone just could have said that.

Hull Designation Letters: CVA

Notes: The Aquila-class Attack Carrier was the result of the 2154 Fleet Analysis that digested the lessons of the Winter War. The outstanding success of carrier power in that war convinced many that the carrier admirals were capable of inflicting great damage on opponents and that they represented a force multiplier that would permit a more powerful naval force with less expenditure.
During the war, deep strike missions were performed by fleet and battle carriers. The Stellar Navy believed that the strikes, while certainly potent, could have been even more effective with purpose-built carriers for that role, and so with the '54 Analysis they began exploring the concept of the Attack Carrier, which would operate in division-sized formations to perform strikes on enemy support targets in support of active interdiction efforts by stealth ships. The Aquila-class was built to be as stealthy as possible with various technical measures to reduce energy signature and both passive and active jamming capability, though the ship was too large to use any form of ECS.
The strike role of the CVAs was seen from the beginning as an attempt by the Stellar Navy to usurp the role generally played by the Aerospace Force's Bomber Command, prompting the derisive comment that they were "a class purpose built for interservice warfare." The Aquila-class became notorious as a symbol of the Stellar Navy's campaign to reduce the Aerospace Force to subluminal operations concerning system and planetary defense only.
Though thirty were ordered by 2156 AST with up to a hundred being considered for construction through the next decade and a half, the Aquila-class attack carrier force was slashed to the initial order of thirty due to the 2156 Fleet Analysis and the resulting cuts on the carrier force. Of said thirty, only the first 12 laid were permitted to be completed as the Navy opted to maintain construction of the larger Enterprise-class fleet carriers rather than spend the limited funds on carriers on a more established rate for the Aquila. With the onset of the war and with an invasion of the Gamma Quadrant in ST-3 planned, construction was finally authorized to resume sufficient pace so that by the end of the war, 24 of the carriers had been put into service. Four of those vessels were lost in the Interuniversal War and another four critically damaged to the extent that they were relegated to reserve status and then sold (three now serve in the Colonial Navy fighting the Federation Civil War; the fourth was also bought by a colonial fleet but was not delivered due to President Dale's Executive Order forbidding deliveries to the Colonial forces, the Gilean Commonwealth has bought the rights to the ship instead).

Aquila-class Attack Carrier

Design Type: New Generation
Status: 18 commissioned, 4 under construction
Hull Designation Letters: CVA
Complement: 550 combat spacecraft, 50 support craft

Battleships of the Alliance Stellar Navy
Kirishima-class Battlecruiser
Design Type: New Generation
Status: 16 in commission, 30 building, 154 planned.
Hull Designation: BC
DWT Mass: 19.9MT
Notes: The Fleet Analysis that followed the armistice with Cardassia in the Winter War cast a wide net. One consideration made was the potential for a future war with Cardassia, and an end where the Alliance was required to occupy the Cardassian Union, including providing the basic defense of her former frontiers. It was noted that the cost of such occupation would be high, and the recommendation was made for a design that, while having a worthwhile role in war, would also be adept at OZ control. The Kirishima-class battlecruiser was the result. To save costs the design was mandated to not surpass 20 megatonnes empty, and the designers managed to come in at the literal edge of that (so close that many speculate intentional inaccuracy that, if corrected, might reveal the design as being over the 20MT limit). The ship, in the classical mold of a battlecruiser, favors speed and firepower over protection, but the designers carefully arranged internal subdivisions to enhance the survivability of the ship.
D.N.S. Kirishima was laid down in New Arisaka Spaceyard on 10 March 2157 AST, the first ADN capital ship to be built at a "minor" yard (the 25MT capacity slip had itself just been completed by Mitsubishi-Sakawa Shipbuilding Inc. a year prior). However, a decision to focus on the larger Canada-class fast battleship and the following outbreak of war with the Dominion and Plymouth switching production to larger capital ships and carriers resulted in the production of the units being scaled back, and only the ten laid down by July 2159 AST had managed to come into service as of the end of hostilities in January 2163.
But as the war wound down, and the image of post-war responsibilities became clearer, the Stellar Navy devoted a larger budget to producing the battlecruisers, and another ten were laid down in 2163FY alone, with a desired fleet of 200 to be reached by 2174, with the slipways freed up by the suspension of greater capital ship production being employed to improve the pace of construction. Further studies, and a shift in defense responsibilities, led to another mission for the design: a frontier guard to provide capital ship firepower to frontiers that were nominally days and weeks away from backup by capital squadrons.

Canada-class Fast Battleship
Design Type: Inter-Generational, New Generation
Status: 294 in commission, 14 building, 0 planned.
Hull Designation: BB
DWT Mass: 22.7MT
Notes: Even before the Cardassian War, observation of naval capability in ST-3 and other universes highlighted a number that lacked the heavy combatant units that were favored in the rest of the Multiverse. Raw combat data from fighting Cardassia further cemented the concept of building a warship type specifically to combat such fleets; well-armed and fast but with inferior protection and mass.
To ensure a sizable fleet, the tonnage was limited to nothing over 24MT. The Canada-class became the favored concept, initially designed in 2153 and being modified to incorporate the lessons learned against the Cardassians. Unlike the Kirishima, the Canada had superior protection and decent speed and firepower, making it a decent choice to destroy newer warships being developed by the Alpha Quadrant powers such as the Federation Sovereign and Klingon Negh'Var. It beat Kirishima to the yards, the Canada's keel being laid in December 2154, and over the next years up to the Interuniversal war, it was the favored unit being laid as the Alliance's slipway capacity expansion project continued bearing fruit. Production was intensified after the Treaty of Westminster and the Sino-Plymouthite accords of CON-5, with New Generation modifications starting with the 63rd unit of the design, D.N.S. Asturias.
During the Dominion War, the design's success against Cardassian and Dominion fleet units again favored it in procurement, and by the end of the war over two hundred additional units had either been ordered or completed, with the excess units being favored to take up the intended role of the Kirishima until enough units of that class could be built. Initially slated to have 300 units in total, an increase to 320 was planned and partially implemented with 8 units ordered in 2164FY until the Dale Administration decided to suspend production pending the release of the 2164 Fleet Analysis.
The Fleet Analysis led to the effective suspension of all new construction for designs between 20 and 28MT in empty mass. Of the eight new keels, only three were permitted to continue, allowing for an eventual fleet strength of 308 when the final unit was finished in 2166. The new class has received a further blow, as the designers lost their bid to renew construction of the design to provide counters to the capable Taloran Kalammi-class battlecruisers, a role which eventually went to the Zohan-designed Tiger-class.

Not fitted for starfighter operations at this time
Crew Complement - 153 officers, ~2,000 enlisted
Notes: The Tiger-class was approved for construction in 2166 after the Stellar Navy considered the capabilities of the Taloran Kalammi-class. In role she is closer to the Canada than the Kirishima, so the Stellar Navy has termed the Tiger a "Fast Battleship", though the Zohan refer to it as a "battlecruiser" in their own schematics. The design is an upgraded, improved version of the Ste. Sophia-class battlecruiser that the Zohan Commonwealth put into service in 2164.

Missouri-class Battleship
Design Type: Inter-Generational
Status: 84 Commissioned, 0 building, 0 planned
Hull Designation: BB
DWT Mass: 26MT
Primary Armament: 18 270mm Particle Cannons in 6 triple turrets.
Notes: The Missouri was the first battleship constructed under Stellar Navy order, with the primary production runs lasting from 2148-2151, 2153-2155, and a third mostly canceled order in 2157. About two hundred and eighty ships of this class have been ordered altogether, with sixty canceled and another eighty-four destroyed or crippled beyond repair in action. They took especially heavy losses in the Interuniversal War, where their inability to deal with the dreadnoughts of the Plymouthite fleet quickly led to exclusive use in other universes or on the Dominion front, where they were a favored target for the Jem'Hadar. Since the design was identified as having some flaws as early as the Clan War, with more being revealed in action against the Cardassians, the decision was made to suspend production in favor of a new class with the 2154 Fleet Analysis. The 2156 Fleet Analysis led to a decision to recommence construction to make up for losses in the fighting with Plymouth and New Oranje up to the armistice, but of the eighty units ordered in the 2157FY, only twenty were permitted to be constructed with the balance going toward the Canada-class and to preserve slipways for the first run of Conquerant-class battleships.
The vessels left on duty are assigned to quiet regions, and will be phased out in the coming decade.

Nagato-class Battleship (Escort Leader)
Design Type: Inter-Generational, New Generation
Status: 58 commissioned, 40 building, 2 planned
Hull Designation: BB
DWT Mass: 23.7MT
Notes: The Nagato-class was specifically designed to protect the large carrier units of the Stellar Navy, with preliminary design work being started in January 2152. The desire for the design was reinforced by the First Battle of Darane in the Cardassian War, which led to the destruction of D.N.S. Kaga and the damaging of other carriers, and the D.N.S. Nagato was laid on 12 January 2155, named after an ADN battleship destroyed in the same battle.
The Nagato design has undergone remarkably fewer modifications when it began New Generation upgrades, mostly in regards to better targeting and communications software, a newer model engine plant to improve fuel consumption, and missile emplacements to take advantage of the latest missile developments.
The design was never meant to exceed 24 megatonnes, which has generally been the "minimum effective tonnage" for battle wall quality ships for the past century, as it is not meant to fight in the wall but provide a large quantity of defensive firepower for carriers and to coordinate the escorts of a carrier group, permitting the carrier facilities to focus on commanding their squadrons. With modern supercarriers carrying over 1,200 combat spacecraft, the importance of this design has vastly increased, and the Stellar Navy always includes the costs of producing and maintaining these ships along with the budget for the carriers they're built to protect.
Conquerant-class Battleship
Design Type: New Generation
Status: 65 commissioned, 20 building, 0 planned
Hull Designation: BB
DWT Mass: 29MT
Notes: The Conquerant was designed to be the successor to the Missouri, which by 2155 was considered to be a flawed design on a number of points. The 2156 Fleet Analysis was the final point needed to encourage the new construction, and thirty ships were ordered for the first run and laid from FY57 to FY60. When the FY60 budget was modified by the Year 1 War Budget following the start of the Interuniversal War, the ordered were almost trebled, and by the end of the war eighty ships were either in commission or were in various states of building. Those Conquerants that made it to the battle wall were credited with beefing up the Stellar Navy in time for the final battles with New Plymouth. However, despite their superior construction and armor scheme, they were still seen as too light for the intended mission, and the 2164 Fleet Analysis encouraged the Stellar Navy to abandon all non-specialist sub-30MT construction and focus on 40MTers.
However the Alliance Council has not agreed to fund the level of construction needed to focus on 40MT ships, and the Conquerant has been given new life of a sort as the basis of the Goeben-class.
Royal Oak-class Missile Battleship
Design Type: New Generation
Status: 23 commissioned, 12 building, 0 planned.
Hull Designation: BBG
DWT Mass: 24.8MT
Notes: The Royal Oak-class is one of the more maligned designs in the Stellar Navy, as an original optimistic plan of building a hundred to operate as battle squadron missile support was brought down by the experiences of the Cardassian War and the Plymouth Campaign. Though some proponents advocated continuing the design in a new role of independent operation against missile-heavy threats, the lack of a large number of such threats (the star nations of AR-12, considered the most missile heavy fleets in the Multiverse, were not large enough to require a large run of these ships on top of national navy operations) resulted in the construction run being capped at the forty that were initially ordered under contract in FY54. Construction was delayed during the Interuniversal War to allow slipways to be granted to more preferred units and the final vessel of the class, D.N.S. Adam Parker, was only laid down in 2163.
Many critics hold that the only reason the entire run wasn't stopped was because the builder, Rawlins Spaceyard Ltd., had political connections to Defense Minister Gregory Rathbone and other key figures. The fact that upon getting the office Rathbone's successor Robert Dale immediately canceled a study on ordering twenty more of the class is seen as reinforcing this, though both men assert that the allegation is false.
Goeben-class Heavy Battleship
Design Type: New Generation
Status: 0 commissioned, 4 building, 150 planned
Hull Designation: BBH
DWT Mass: 38.3MT
Primary Armament: 12 440mm HV Coilguns in 4 triple turrets, 16 290mm Particle Cannons in 4 quad turrets.
Notes: The Goeben-class is the result of a budget compromise in the Alliance Council, which balked at the cost of the "Fleet Improvement Initiative" proposed by the 2164 Fleet Analysis that would have suspended all wall ship production that was below 40MT empty mass. As the Interuniversal War had proven ultimately the unviability of traditional battleships (in the nomenclature, ships that did not exceed 30MT empty, at which time they were considered "dreadnoughts") there was the perceived need to improve the wall fleet to match the standards of the other Great Powers, specifically the Taloran and Habsburg fleets.
Due to the outcome of the budget deal, the Alliance Council authorized an "addendum" to the FY65 budget that allowed for the laying of four new "heavy battleships", as the Navy called them; ships that were above 30MT but did not reach the 40MT limit the Navy wanted, and for the 2166FY, full expansion would begin with twenty being allowed to be laid with a cap of 150 in commission approved (With allowments for the Navy to contract more if necessary). The design picked was the Goeben, which was based on the Conquerant-class, which had performed adequately for its mass in the battles with New Plymouth. Her guns were improved over the Conquerant to a mix of 440mm Coilguns and 290mm particle cannons, reducing the cost of an all coilgun design, with an improved armor and protection scheme and an engine plant sufficient to maintain a favorable speed profile for her mass.
Tirpitz-class Dreadnought
Design Type: Inter-Generational
Hull Designation: DN
DWT Mass: 40.1MT
Energy Armament: 30 290mm particle cannons in 10 triple turrets (1.1GT per gun). 40 200mm particle cannons in 10 double turrets. (35MT per gun.)
Notes: The Tirpitz-class dreadnought was designed intentionally as a limited-run inter-generational ship to provide field operational testing of concepts to be more widely-implemented into New Generation ships. The first ships of the class were being commissioned by the end of 2151 and would go through a trial by fire through every war up to the Interuniversal War. No new ships of this class are planned to be constructed at current, though an upgraded version with New Generation tech is being considered to help built the fleet up to the 625 dreadnought level desired by the Stellar Navy.
Ships:
D.N.S. Tirpitz
D.N.S. Musashi (destroyed in the Second Battle of Darane)
D.N.S. Vaclav Havel

Jellicoe-class Dreadnought
Design Type: New Generation
Status: 118 commissioned, 100 building, 62 planned
Hull Designation: DN
DWT Mass: 46.8MT
Primary Armament: 30 440mm HV Coilguns arranged in 10 triple turrets
Notes: The Jellicoe-class was conceived to complement the Vesuvius-class superdreadnought in the New Generation Battle Squadrons of the Stellar Navy. The Jellicoe incorporates lessons learned from the Winter War and mounts HV Coilguns instead of standard Particle Cannons for added punch and potential anti-Borg capability.
After the Plymouth Conflict encounters between existant ADN battleships and Plymouthite God's Judgement-class dreadnoughts led to the reconsideration of the Jellicoe's firepower and protection schemes in a future conflict with New Plymouth Colony. The Royal Sovereign-class dreadnought developed to meet this threat initially overtook Jellicoe-class construction, but in turn cost measures and the onset of the Interuniversal War against the Dominion, Cardassia, and New Plymouth Colony prompted a flurry of Jellicoe-class construction. The dreadnought type proved itself, new models quickly joining the fleet to replace Tirpitz-class dreadnoughts lost in action, and earned itself a place in the post-war dreadnought fleet. With the start of the 2166FY and the Alliance Council relenting on the issue of beefing up the Alliance battle-wall fleet, the slack construction of the immediate post-war era was made up with a new set of orders, as well as bringing incomplete hulls back into the yards to be finished and introduced into the Stellar Navy. The Jellicoe-class will likely be in the Stellar Navy's rolls for quite a long while.
Ships:
D.N.S. Sir John Jellicoe
D.N.S. Maximilian von Spee
D.N.S. Sir David Beatty
Royal Sovereign-class Dreadnought
Design Type: New Generation
Status: 36 commissioned, 4 building, 60 planned
Hull Designation: DN
DWT Mass: 49.2MT
Primary Armament: 30 460mm HV Coilguns arranged in 10 triple turrets
Notes: The Royal Sovereign was the result of the 2156 Fleet Analysis, which came to the conclusion that the ~47MT Jellicoe-class was not capable of standing up to the Plymouthite God's Judgement-class dreadnoughts. The Royal Sovereign replaces the lighter 440mm HV coilguns for 460mm ones, the same caliber used on the Vesuvius, for heavier firepower. The extra DWT also includes superior armor.
D.N.S. Royal Sovereign was laid on 19 July 2158, being completed and delivered in late 2160. The initial block of ten Royal Sovereigns that were sequentially laid after her were all in service by July 2161 AST, when they were added to the battle squadrons that took part in the crucial naval battles at Illustrious and Luther. By the end of the war all forty ordered Royal Sovereign-class dreadnoughts had been delivered, with two directly lost in action and two being decommissioned due to battle damage (One, D.N.S. Jan Sobieski, was sold to the Royal Anglian Navy of ST-3 and recommissioned as H.(A.)M.S. Warspite, eventually joining the renowned Colonial Battle Fleet commanded by Adm. Benjamin Sisko).
In the post-war budgets the Stellar Navy was not given enough funds to adequately build them instead of the cheaper Jellicoe, and as a result no further units were ordered save four replacements for the lost vessels. In 2165FY, when the Navy was permitted to enhance its 40MT+ force, it added an order of 60 Royal Sovereign-class vessels to be built and delivered over the course of ten years.
Ships:
D.N.S. Royal Sovereign
H.(A.)M.S. Warspite (ex-D.N.S. Jan Sobieski)
D.N.S. King George VI
Freedom-class Superdreadnought
Design Type: Inter-Generational
Status: 55 commissioned, 0 building, 0 planned.
Hull Designation Letters: SD
DWT Mass: 55.7MT
Energy Armament: 40 310mm particle cannons in 10 quad turrets (1.1GT per gun). 40 200mm particle cannons in 10 double turrets. (35MT per gun.)
Projectile Armament: 10 missile rails (port and starboard launchers). 20 torpedo tubes (port and aft).
Notes: The Freedom class was the first superdreadnought purpose-ordered by the Alliance Stellar Navy. Based on the New Israeli Tikvah from the 2130s, the Freedom became the public image of the Alliance Stellar Navy's wall of battle due to the accomplishments of superdreadnoughts of the class in the Cardassian War and the Plymouth Conflict.
Though certainly a capable design, the Freedom was built as an inter-generational design, and no further units of the class were ordered after 2157FY. After taking some losses in the Interuniversal War, the remaining Freedoms were returned to Navy duty, though they are being phased out of service in favor of the newer superdreadnoughts. Most have been placed in mothballs, though a few have ended up in friendly navies, including the Gilean Commonwealth's Navy and the ST-3 Colonials, where the former D.N.S. Indefatigable became the flagship of Admiral Benjamin Sisko in the Federation Civil War.

Notes: The Aleksandr Nevsky is considered by some to simply be a Second Block of Freedom-class warship. It is essentially the same shipform in most ways, enlarged to encompass a greater battery of guns and extra missile rails. The design was considered as a cheaper alternative to the Vesuvius-class, permitting the Stellar Navy to have a larger superdreadnought force in numbers than if it only built Vesuvius-class ships and to get it built faster, as the Nevsky-class could fit into the existing slipways used to construct sub-60MT DWT ships while Vesuvius required the sub-80MT DWT slipways, of which there were fewer.
In terms of combat weapons the Nevsky is really just a Freedom with more guns, though the design applies lessons learned during the Cardassian and Plymouth conflicts of the 2150s. The Wall Admirals of the Navy nevertheless tend to dislike the design, preferring it if they could get the larger and more capable Vesuvius. This attitude has been considered unfair by many less-biased naval analysts, who believe the Nevsky is a solid superdreadnought that is worthy of respect. This is an attitude that has been summed up recently by Admiral Sir George Cradock, the British CON-5 war hero of the Interuniversal War, with the caustic remark, "Only in the Stellar Navy could a robust and solid fifty-nine megatonne dreadnought be derided as an inferior choice forced upon the Navy by parliamentary penny-pinching."

Notes: The Vesuvius was the most powerful direct combat warship in the Interuniversal War, only considered directly contested by the Taloran Empress Saverana II-class dreadnought in the navies of the Multiverse. A behemoth that, with combat mass included, approaches 300 megatonnes while being over 63MT in deadweight tonnage, Vesuvius' earliest conception was as a major wall combatant that would carry Hyper-Velocity Coilguns capable of inflicting damage upon the most feared and resilient warships of the known Multiverse; Borg Cubes. The expense of the class became its own worst enemy, the war-time defense budget writers and the Alliance Council preferring construction of less-costly vessels. By the end of the Interuniversal War most of the initial order of 15 was in Stellar Navy hands, but the Alliance Council would only permit five more to be ordered in the first post-war budget, insisting that the Navy use the lighter, less costly Aleksandr Nevsky-class design. Only in the deliberations for the 2166 fiscal year, with the '64 Fleet Analysis and the observed capabilities of the Taloran battle wall to buoy their arguments, did the Stellar Navy win permission to order 10 more, to enter the fleet entirely by 2173 AST, with an option to fund another block of ten by 2170FY. It remains to be seen if the Council will readily permit another order after that, as the Federalist majority is friendly to the Alliance "Carrier Admiral" contingent that is arguing that the money would be better spent by expanding the carrier fleet.

Ships:

Since it was requested...
In the Alliance Stellar Navy, different types of carriers have different functions in both peacetime and wartime.
Escort Carriers (CVEs) are just that. They escort transport convoys in and near the combat regions of space, providing combat fighter support to the escorting destroyers. Some can also be fixed to Hunter-Killer commands that hunt down enemy interdiction ships (Plymouthite Q-Ships for instance). A secondary purpose in peacetime (or outside war zones) is to provide frontier space with carrier support where national navy forces cannot, since main carrier forces are often days or even weeks away in some cases.
Light Carriers (CVLs) are not currently in use by the Stellar Navy directly. These ships of 8-12MT deadweight tonnage are still fielded for frontier and border defense by some Alliance member nations. With carrier wings of 80-200 combat fighters (they vary widely by design) they provide fighter support to distant frontiers that are far from major fleet commands or add fighter capacity to tense border sectors. The Stellar Navy has contemplated ordering Light Carriers to take up the mission of frontier defense, but for the moment the surplus of escort carriers built during the Interuniversal War is seen as a cheaper alternative for this role.
Battle Carriers (CVBs) are specialized carriers that actually carry smaller complements than their tonnages would ordinarily permit. The purpose of the battle carrier is to provide direct combat support to ADN battle squadrons - that is, battleships - with combat starfighters. Most often CVB fighter wings are entirely or mostly composed of sublight fighters, incapable of independent FTL travel, since the battle carriers provide direct on-site support to a battle wall. Because of this, battle carriers often carry their own anti-ship weapons of cruiser grade and have decent protection between deflectors and armor.
Attack Carriers (CVAs) are the result of the Cardassian War in the 2150s. The success of carrier strikes on Cardassian facilities and installations, including the surprise attack on the Cardassian 1st Fleet that opened the war, prompted the Stellar Navy to look into building a class of carrier lighter than a fleet carrier that could perform such operations, permitting fleet carriers to focus on other operations. The CVAs were designed to potentially carry 550 spacecraft, including the large FB-39 Devastator fleet bomber that could carry OS (Orbit-to-Surface) missiles to be delivered to planetary targets.
As formations the Attack Carrier was conceived as the center unit in an AttCarDiv (Attack Carrier Division) that would operate independent of normal fleet operations and commence deep strikes on enemy targets. The function of the CVAs, including the use of large carrier-launchable bombers that could carry OSMs, was very clearly similar to Aerospace Force's Bomber Command, a fact not lost on observers of the vicious interservice fights of the 2150s.
Planetary Assault Carriers (CVPs) are the LHD/LHAs of the Stellar Navy, still called the "Gator Navy" by many. They support planetary assault operations with combat wings of Marine Corps-piloted aerospace fighters like the F/A-37 Corsair and the larger Okinawa-class ships are often the center of PABGs (Planetary Assault Battle Groups). Both classes also carry Marine units and assault landing craft for them - the Okinawa can at peak capacity carry an entire division of 15-20,000 Marines. The Caldwell Station-class ships are attached to such commands as needed, while also being used for smaller-scale planetary assault landings such as the Alliance invasion of Orion colonies during Operation: Tubman in 2156 AST, or the anti-piracy raids against Caliphal State pirate bases in the late 2150s.
If an operation calls for it, a BatCarDiv (Battle Carrier Division) will be attached to a PABG, and on some occasions a Fleet Carrier's CVTG is attached to a PABG to form what the Navy refers to as a JCOG (Joint Combat Operation Group).
Fleet Carriers (CVF) are powerful fleet units in their own right, carrying over 800 combat spacecraft into action. They are primarily used for dedicated strike missions against enemy facilities or to provide extensive fighter support during major fleet engagements. A Fleet Carrier contains the necessary electronics, support craft, and facilities to provide sector-wide command coverage, often resulting in Admirals placing their flags aboard attached Fleet Carriers during major operations (though some stubborn "Wall Admirals" refuse to issue commands from Carriers and keep their flags on their dreadnought or superdreadnought lead ships). A Fleet Carrier is organized with a CVTG (Carrier Task Group) of 20 combat escorts, not counting UNREP auxiliaries that are attached as necessary for long-range operations.
The concept of the Fleet Carrier predates the Alliance and there are about a hundred and eighty vessels in existance of such designation, though the largest and most up-to-date design of this type is the Enterprise-class Fleet Carrier ordered by the Alliance Stellar Navy. Sixty one of these vessels have been built or are under construction for a total fleet of sixty of them (one, D.N.S. Kaga CVF-7, was scuttled on 28 November 2153 AST after being rammed by a Cardassian cruiser, CDS Ducelik, almost 3,000 of her crew being killed in the action).
Although there are larger ships and carriers in the Stellar Navy, the CVF fleet enjoys another distinction, as the D.N.S. Enterprise CVF-1 maintains the distinction of being considered the Flagship
Strategic Carriers (CVS) are also known as "supercarriers" and are the pride and joy of the Alliance Stellar Navy (outside of the Wall Admiral clique at least). They are the first combat starships in the Multiverse to carry an Inter-Universal Wormhole Generator Assembly, providing these carriers with a unique and potent capacity for rapid redeployment between universes, as opposed to having to travel to an IU Gate Assembly for inter-universal transit. With a deadweight tonnage mass of over 80 megatons - almost twenty more than the largest superdreadnoughts in the Multiverse - and almost two kilometers in length, the two Strategic Carrier designs of the Stellar Navy - the Yamamoto and Whitmore-classes - carry over 1,400 combat spacecraft and over a hundred support craft. Slow in sublight speed capability, they are also well-guarded by a force of forty escort and combat vessels in their CVBG (Carrier Battle Group), and every supercarrier's escorts include a specialized Nagato-class escort-command battleship to lead protection efforts for the supercarriers. The Strategic Carriers also possess massive STELCOM chambers within their armored keels. STELCOM (Stellar Command) is intended to provide an admiral with the on-hand capability to accurately command the operations of an entire naval theater.
During the Interuniversal War, Strategic Carriers could be found providing Theater Command capability to the invasion of the Gamma Quadrant and to operations against New Plymouth, their massive fighter wings performing strike missions across entire sectors. However, a number of CVS ships never deployed to the active war zones, but rather provided rapid-response power projection for the Stellar Navy to deal with hotspots in other universes while the Alliance was embroiled in major interstellar war in two different universes.

After some discussion with Marina, I decided to put an extra carrier class (and type) up, the Aquila-class attack carrier. It has a... colorful history. It wasn't just built for real warfare, but for interservice warfare.
