David Weber and Steve White, not just Weber. Starfire started as a tabletop space-exploration/colonization/warfare game, and also has a tactical combat version. When they went to their third edition, they hired Weber, already a high-profile space-navy warfare/military sci-fi author to help design it. He was given carte blanche and near-total control of the Starfire universe setting, and the story about what happened when the game was sold to another company is a story in it's own right. Weber and Steve White wrote four novels entitled Crusade, In Death Ground, The Shiva Option, and Insurrection, that cover the later story of the Starfire universe. The books have since been rereleased as a pair of omnibus editions called The Stars At War I and II.
I'm not familiar with the game beyond the
homepage and the
background story material, but I've heard it said here on SD.net that you have to be an accountant to be able to keep track of the details in the current (fifth) ediiton.
The books are great stuff though. I highly recommend them.
