I want to put together a story that's primarily science fiction, but my own background is limited. I don't mind writing a soft science fiction story but I'd like the few elements to be accurate and I would like to avoid the problems that seems to have arisen in Star Trek. So I was hoping that I could get some tips on writing a character that is perhaps a scientist and an engineer.
The general idea behind the story I want to write is not unlike a Torchwood/X-Files concept, but perhaps more aimed towards children, where the characters are investigating strange phenomenon around the world, and perhaps in space.

"Our people were meant to be living gods, warrior-poets who roamed the stars bringing civilization, not cowards and bullies who prey on the weak and kill each other for sport. I never imagined they'd prove themselves so inferior. I didn't betray our people – they betrayed themselves."
