Down the Rabbithole - Fiction Situated in Communities

Post by InnerBrat »

This is sort of context for my fic Resonant Spirits, but also a wider take on fanfiction as a whole, given a specific, very insular community.

My very good friend, Aurora, has written a rambling essay, here that not just explains the context, but expands on some points in general, including the community-specific point of fandom in general.
This leads us to some important questions: First, what are the misunderstandings both of meaning and intent that arise when people outside the rabbithole community are exposed to rabbithole fic? Second, is it possible to attain even approximate boundaries on larger communities (that is, is there a “slashers” community, and if not is there a set of identifiable communities it might be broken up into)? Third, what does it take to enter into a community?
Anyone have any thoughts?
