Title is Temporary.

I blame this idea on reading the latest "ST:TNG" book "Greater than the Sum". I don't have a title of this, but it involves the coming new war with the Borg Collective.

I'm attempting from staying away from the Enterprise-E and her crew, because I don't think I could write them correctly. Suggestions on a title would be greatly appreciated, because I think "Borg War" sounds stupid....

The main events of this story takes place in March 2381, six months after the Starship Enterprise successfully destroyed the Borg assimilated Starship Einstein, and two months after the destruction of the planets Acamar and Borolia which marked the opening shots of this new Borg offensive.

--------------------------------------------

"We are the Borg. You will be annhiliated. Your Biological and Technological distinctiveness has become irrelevant. Resistance is futile...but welcome."

The monotone voice droned throught he communications channel. Moments ago, a Borg Cube had appeared from seemingly nowhere above the planet Hypodron IV, surronded by a wave task force of Spheres and even several of the not oft-seen Wedges.

A Borg armada had come. Before it, hovering in a protective formation, a fleet of Federation Starships had gathered. Ever since the Borg blitzkrieg attack that destroyed Borolia and Acamar and handed them the Federation's Multi-Vector Agent which was meant to finish the war once and for all.

A little over two months ago, the Enterprise-E had succedded in a mission to destroy the captured and assimilated U.S.S. Einstein. Within a month of it's success, two Borg Cubes appeared mysteriously over the two planets - both five sectors from each other. A attempt to infect the Borg with the Agent resulted in failure, as the Borg had struck down the Away Team sent after them, instead of assimilating them. With a captured sample of the Multi-vector Agent brought onboard by Lt Leybenzon as a last ditch effort to infect a Drone, the Borg adapted and became immune.

And now they had come. Borg ships appearing in Federation space, come not to assimilate, but to annhilate.

"Full power to weapons," Captain Trevor Sanchez of the U.S.S. Heritage ordered. Crew members responded to the orders, as the Defiant-Class Starship prepared for combat. In space above the planet, over fifty other starships and the "Hyperion" class Starbase armed their weapons and powered up their shields.

The Borg fleet remained motionless for a moment, before a flight of Wedges broke off and dived for the Federation formation.

Borg disruptors and Federation phasers and torpedoes cut through the depths of space, the Star Fleet ships breaking formation and running in multiple directions.

The battle was joined.

Borg Wedges drove into the Federation ships, weapons slicing out into shields of the Excelsior, Galaxy, Sabre and Luna class starships, dotted with the smaller explosions as Pergrine-class fighters were swatted out of the way. The Spheres floated laxily forward, disruptor beams impacting Federation shields, causing them to glow and flicker.

Two Excelsior class ship, the Lichton and the Dorsat, speed towards the Cube, which until now had not fired a single shot - but instead was drifting towards the planet and it's starbase.

Phasers cut through the blackness of space, striking at the monolithic cube, only to be intercepted by a group of Spheres. Borg torpedoes flew from the smaller ships. The Dorsat's shields flared under the barrage of green torpedoes, till it's shields failed, and torpedoes instead impacted on the hull. The first torpedo blasted into the center of the saucer section, ripping upward through the lower sensor dome, and out throught he bridge dome. Three more torpedoes struck the ship's engineering hull, and breached the antimatter containment systems. Fragment of the Dorsat exploded outward, impacting the port flank of the Lichton.

The Spheres changed targets even as the Federation ship exploded. The Litchton attempted to put distance between itself and the Spheres, finding it's aft under assault by a flight of Wedges. Seconds later, the Lichton's shields buckled, and the ship was engulfed in a warp core breach.

"The Lichton and the Dorsat have been destroyed. The fleet is suffering heavy losses."

"Borg Sphere at 20,000 kilometers and closing," said the voice from tactical.

"Evasive maneuvers. Bring us around to bearing 2-4-9 point 1, ready forward phasers and torpedo tubes."

The Defiant-class U.S.S. Heritage twisted in space, the Destroyer twisting around a pair of Borg energy beams that threatened to skewer its nacelles.

The impulse engines roared within the ship, as they pushed the tiny ship up and out roaring past the Borg Sphere which dwarfed it. The Heritage roared past, a glancing blow delivered to its shields as the Borg attempted to track the erratic movements.

"Helm, 180° turn, full impulse. Tactical, fire at will."

At the Captain's orders, the Heritage swung around on its axis, now flying at full impulse speeds in reverse, as pulse phasers and quantum torpedoes opened up their wrath.

The Sphere's shields absorbed the first impacts, flared under the near constant assault, then buckled as the first torpedo struck. Pulse phasers and quantum torpedoes smashed into the hull, tearing through the ship's hull, and causing catastrophic damage. Within a few moments, the Borg Sphere was adrift in space, as a spread of photon torpedoes caused it to be consumed in anti-matter explosions.

With one ship down, the Heritage swung back around, its rearward phaser array striking a Wedge which attempted to come up it’s aft. The Wedge evaded the first beam, was clipped by the second, and was cored through by the third.

"Good work Telsia," Captain Sanchez said, "Target the nearest Sphere, and plot a course."

Space over Hypodron
IV had become a charnel house as the two fleets clashed. Federation and Borg wreckage littered orbital and near orbital space.

Through it all, ignoring the conflict occurring only a hundred thousand kilometers from it, the Borg Cube drifted closer to the planet. A ponderous beast, it drifted through space under its own sublight drive, its weapons armed and shields ready for any incoming Federation weaponry.

The Hyperion Class Starbase Angelwrath was the only thing which stood between the Cube and the planet. Angelwrath was a massive beast, visible from the planet's surface, bristling with weapons and surrounded by defensive platforms - the Hyperion class Starbases were the first true battle platform constructed by the Federation for planetary defense. Second only to the Spacedock facilities constructed over the Federation Home worlds for the latest in technology, they could stand up to a Fleet of the other Alpha and Beta Quadrant's ships.

It was hoped to be powerful enough to stop a Borg Cube.

At 300,000 kilometers from the planet, the Cube stopped. Well out of the range of Federation phasers, the Cube would be able to intercept any torpedoes before they impacted.

The first bolt tore a hole through the upper right corner of the Cube facing the planet. Attempting to analyze what just struck through its shields and tore a gaping wound in their ship, the Borg missed the next three bolts which smashed into their hull, tearing through the shields, and rending apart hull and internals.

The Cube no longer stopped, instead of rushed towards the Federation Starbase and its planet. Plasma torpedoes and Borg disruptors flashed from multiple sections, attempting to swat the Federation gnat. They had hurt the Cube. Tore past its defenses and inflicted damage to the hull.

The Cube redirected power to their shields, as another volley of energy bolts flew through space. The entire Cube seemed to shudder in space as the shields intercepted the first three bolts, with the fourth tearing through the weakened spot and forming another crater in the hull.

Well within transporter range, the Borg Cube reacted. The weapon must be assimilated. A defense would be found after the assimilation of the space station. Borg Drones disappeared from their alcoves within the great ship, transported away, only to reappear in the midst of space, floating away.

The Federation had discovered a way to block the Borg transporters.

Borg Disruptors flashed out, striking the Starbase's shields, causing them to light up in space. Another volley of energy bolts struck the Cube's shields, shields which were being constantly reinforced with every erg of power the Cube could spare.

As another bolt of the new weapon splashed against the Cube's hull, the Cube changed course.

Regeneration systems had already kicked in as the Cube tore away from the Starbase at full speed, heading instead for the Starships. The base was more than a match for the Cube - not so for the ships.

Spheres and Wedges fell back, surrounding the Cube as it drew new. Like a massive wave, the Borg flew into the Federation ships. Phasers and torpedoes splashed against the Cube's shields, as energy beams and plasma torpedoes tore into the Federation ranks.

Within minutes, the Federation fleet laid waste, the few remaining ships pulling away from the battlefield at impulse speeds, back to the planet. Of the original Borg fleet, less than ten ships, including the Cube remained operation.

Not enough to attack the planet.

The Cube hovered in space, regenerating its damage, when it detected the approach of a torpedo.

Trajectory tracking indicated it flew from the Starbase. The Borg was analyzing what the torpedo, when it smashed into their shields. The Transphasic Torpedo exploded, smashing through the shields, and interacting with the Borg's systems. Two others joined the first, and the Cube became a miniature star in the sky over Hypodron IV - taking the last few Borg ships with it.

54th Fleet Task Force "Glamdring"
Nova Praxus System
Lamda Sector, Federation Space
Stardate: 58196.04

Above the planet Nova Praxus II, the battle had become fever pitched.

Bolts of star fire flashed out over the planet, graceful Federation starships swam through the void, trading blows with their Borg counterparts. A defiant class ship, it's running lights proudly illuminating the registry U.S.S. Victorious NCC - 77053, twisted in a corkscrew manuver, dodging a Borg tractor beam that had attempted to lock on.

Pulse phasers answered the Cube, globes of concentrated yellow energy ripping through space to impact the Borg ship, tearing apart hull armor - armor that almost immediately began to repair like a living organism.

A Sphere attempted to follow the nimble Federation ship, it's shape and uniform appearance made it seem to a observer, as if the universe itself moved, as the Sphere stood still. A barrage of green disruptor beams attempted to strike the [/i]Victorious[/i], only to be avoided by the quick thinking helmsman.

The Victorious speed away from the Cube, trailing the Sphere along with it. Elsewhere, Federation ships stood under the assault, their shields holding against the might of the Borg weaponry aligned against them - the New Orleans-class U.S.S. Boston and the Norway-class U.S.S. Budapest were also starting to fall back, though not as quickly as the more agile Victorious.

"Victorious to Task Force. Fall back to Checkpoint Bravo."

Captain T'pok of the Victorious spoke the words with measured calmness. How like a Vulcan, in the midst of battle with a impplacable foe, one who sought their very destruction, and he remained calm.

"Budapest and Boston are acknowledging Captain."

With all the grace two starships could muster under heavy fire from a more numerous foe, the three Federation Starships broke from the fight, pulling away from the Borg ships at full impulse.

Nova Praxus II was a Pre-Warp civilization, their people only now reaching the "Information Age" as it was dubbed back on old Earth. Aside from a few manned missions into their orbital space, along with a network of satellites the Novians had remained planet bound. Federation stealth technology managed to keep their ships from being located by the satellite networks, but the Borg had no qualms about being discovered.

They wanted their opponents to know they were arriving in fact. The planetary governments had attempted a response, a few nuclear missiles had been launched from various facilities before the Federation Starships had arrived, and those facilities had been obliterated by Borg weapons fire. The missiles made it into low orbit, before they were intercepted by a formation of Borg Probe ships. Several of the powerful missiles made it past the point defense firing by the Probes, and found homes against the Borg ships. The ships were eliminated in the blink of a eye, but the plent was left defenseless.

But now, with the arrival of the Federation ships, and now their attempts to flee, the Borg's attention had been pulled from the planet, and onto the annihilation of their foe.

"Checkpoint Bravo in thirty seconds." spoke the helmsman, a Andorian male named Shrev.

"Plot trajectory. Are the Borg still following us?"

"Affirmative Captain," the melodious voice of Commander B'rin Lotash called from the tactical station.

"Circiling the moon Captain, coming up to Checkpoint Bravo."

The Victorious and her fellow ships swung around the orbit of the first of the planet's three moons, their impulse engines glowing a brillant red as they attempted to escape the Borg.

The ships looked tiny against the rocky surface of the moon, hugging the Curve just outside the pull of it's gravity well. Sensors in this region were affected harshly by a EM storm which boiled from the otherwise bare surface, forcing ships to travel by line of sight. It was normally a hazard, but it was hoped the Borg would not be able to see through the interference either.

"Coming along the dark side now, Captain" reported Shrev.

The Vulcan captain allowed a small pull at his lips, the closest he ever came to smiling. "Now" he ordered.

As if in a timed motion, all three ships pulled away from the Moon's surface, ten Spheres and the Cube following on them hotly. As the Borg rounded the moon, the first three Spheres exploded brilliantly.

Eight Federation Starships waited in the dark side of the moon's orbit, weapons charged and shields raised, unafflicted by the recent battle the other three had been. Momentum was not on the Borg's side, as the ships rounded the satellite, and was met by Federation weapons fire.

Phasers and photon torpedoes arched from the higher orbit locations of the Star Fleet ships. Smaller, green bolts from Isokinetic cannons flashed out, driving solid mases of ultra-high speed munitions into the Borg ships. Weapons the Borg could not adapt to, and harder to detect especially in the EM storm that was the moon's interference.

Another volley of Isokinetic cannon fire plowed into the Borg Spheres, the relatively small ships crumpling and withering into the destructive hailfire. One Sphere caught on fire as the round which penetrated it's hull ignited. T'pok had to admit, there was something immensely satisfying, in a primitive sort of way, about watching the Borg ship catch on fire in the cold airless depths of space.

The Victorious and her escorts traveled on impulse, to join their fellow ships, as the Cube rounded the planetary satellite. At their center, a Akira-class starship sailed forth, aligned herself with the cube before it arrive into weapons range, and unleashed hell.

Bolts of plasmic nuclear hellfire traveled along phaser beams, striking the Borg Cube before it could bring itself to bear. The Cube shuddered as beam after beam plowed into it's hull, tearing away chunks of the outer hull and weakening it's shields. Isokinetic cannons joined with the plasma phaser fire, and contributed to the continue weakening of the Borg shields.

The rest of the Federation ships joined in shortly there-after, phasers, quantum and photon torpedoes, and isokinetic cannons unleashing their wrath.

The cube shuddered and quacked with the impacts, portions of hull being consumed with each passing second.

Within a minute, before the Borg Cube had closed enough to utilize it's tractor beam, it's structural integrity failed, and the Cube broke apart.

On board the Victorious the bridge crew shouted in joy, and T'pok allowed his smile to remain.

Task Force Glamdring had eliminated it's first Cube.

So is this "Task Force Glamdring" going to be the focus of the story? I like the story thus far, even if the premise isn't anything terribly revolutionary (no offense!). It would be helpful if we could meet some more permanent characters, something to make the story stand out more than just a Fed vs Borg fic. I'm definitely interested in seeing more.

Wasn't Glamdrang the name of Gandalf's sword in the Hobbit?

Taskforce Glamdring will indeed, be the main focus of the story. I know the premise isn't anything original in fanfiction, but I'm writing the off of the Trek Relaunch books, adding in some new weapons tech to help keep it from being a otherwise total slaughter.

You'll be meeting more of Taskforce Glamdring in the next chapter, and a possible introduction to the sister group, Taskforce Damocles (Player Task Force from the Trek game about to start up on LibArc).

I'll even give some insites to the new tech being displayed. It should be noted, both Damocles and Glamdring are testbeds for these new technologies. Everyone you see in Taskforce Glamdring, will reappear as permanant characters, though the story will focus more upon the Flag ship of the task force and it's crew.

Yeah, it was. I chose it specifically for the task force's name, as it translates from the Elvish to "Foe Hammer".
