Prologue

Light flickers in a darkened theater, and the murmur of voices is silent, hushed with anticipation. With a slight slurring, the sound kicks in and a kaleidoscope of light the screen comes to life.

“MGM STUDIOS BRINGS YOU NEWS OF THE WORLD!” The words echo in the dark.

“Dateline, Warsaw.” Images of jack-booted soldiers and tanks rolling past sullen crowds ruble into view. “The nation of Poland ceased to exist today, as German and Soviet leaders signed a special agreement.” Pictures of cheering crowds waving swastikas and sickles. “The joint occupation of Polish territories continues, and though British Prime Minister Chamberlain declares the war against tyranny will continue, there has been no real aid to the Poles.

“Nazi casualties from the war are reported to be very light, thanks to their new wonder-medicine.” Images of very dignified Prussian doctors looking over young men in hospital beds, Hitler watching over them. “The drug, called ‘Berlicht-Kanten’, has been reputed to have remarkable healing properties, the German war department claiming any soldier not shot dead has no excuse to not be back at the front in six days.”

“But American ingenuity is no slouch, either!” The picture changes to a thin, elderly man standing in a desert, inspecting equipment. “Nicola Tesla, the wizard of the west, is back and brighter than ever! Thanks to the discovery of new supplies of Americite in western Nevada, he hopes to power a new wave in weapons.”

A close-up of the man, squinting in the sun. “I am confident that with my teleforce weapon, America will have no trouble shooting down an aeroplane at two hundred miles, or any warship on the horizon.” The image changed to show a group of men clambering over a large, wicked-looking gun mount.
“Go get him, Doctor Tesla!” The announcer shouts.

“In London, the Royal Museum is having a gala affair this fall.” Images show a myriad of antiques, artifacts, and animal fossils. “Recently acquired, the Museum will be displaying a never-before-seen altar said to be rescued from treasure-hunters. According to legend, it may hold the key to the power of the ancient god of Egypt.”

“And Egyptian fever is on the rise here at home as well!” Clips showing another fashionable party in a similar museum. “Recently salvaged by a New Jersey fishing business, the treasure of the legendary Stewart expedition will be on display in Chicago through the end of the year!” Display cases of gold and jeweled treasure gleam. “The British Ambassador will be hosting a ball at the Chicago Art Museum to raise support for her cause and she tries to protect colonies in north Africa and the mid-east. Dignitaries from a dozen nations are expected to attend, in a who’s-who of the world’s elite.”

“That’s all for now, but come back soon, when MGM Studios brings you… NEWS OF THE WORLD!”

A man turns to his neighbor. "Indiana, truly your world is a wonderous place. I greatly enjoy these moving pictures, as you call them."

The other man shifts in his seat. "If you like movies, you're going to love this one, Bra'tac. Its in color."

"Truly? Not this black-and-white projections you show?"

"Nope, Wizard of Oz is all color. You're going to love it, its about a girl who goes to a strange planet and battles the system lord who lives there."

Bra'tac raised an eyebrow and looked at his friend. "Indeed, I will enjoy seeing such a thing."

It's back!

Bra'tac watching Wizard of Oz is pretty funny. Especially considering SG-1's own fascination with referencing that movie.

Love the intro. Even if you're not able to get around to rest of the story, totally worth it.

Alright, more SG1939! I've been looking forward to this ever since the end of the first story.

This looks to be a promising start, though I'm both scared yet strangely looking forward to Bra'tac humming some of the songs from the Wizard of Oz.

Excellent. I've been looking for a decent fanfic to follow for a while, and if the sequel is half as good as the original it will fit the bill nicely.

I'm imagining Jaffa guards marching lock-step while chanting "Oh-ee-oh, Ohhhh-Um!".

I like the idea of the stargate being disguised as a mining camp, since then we can have thousands of workers & experts go in there without drawing notice - Everything's supposed to be underground.

And here I thought that teleforce was impossible? Ah well, I'd like to see what the Germans do during the Battle of Britain when their planes are shot down with radar-guided teleforce emplacements.

If the Nazis manage to contact Euronda, they'll be fielding Aerofighters.

Interesting take on the Wizard of Oz. Will the Nazis still eventually turn on the USSR in this timeline? Does it matter? So many interesting possibilities in this verse.

According to its official site, it had that name since 1882.

If they are getting help from Euronda will the Norwegian Heavy Water plant be a lot more important in this timeline than it really was in reality?

Heck, they might even put the Stargate right next to it to make transport easier and then it would be one of their most fortified installations. I find it really hard to believe that they'd move the gate beyond the German borders. They might try to dissassemble the plant and ship it to germany, but that may lead to an unacceptable loss of production, on the other hand not doing so leaves it open to raids on the way home. Which means more assets on security for the most war vital materials of the war.

Either way it will probably be one of the two most fortified german positions in existance. The heavy water raids will either need American stargate tech aid, or they'll never succeed.

Sure they didn't really start losing yet, but it was stalemated (Since it had lasted generations and all). I got the impression they were just trying to wait their enemies out, but I don't think they'd pass up a chance to effectivly stop the fuel decline and stabilize their supply. It'd be worth a few trinkets.

Though they are also negotiating from a lot stronger position than they were in canon. And you have to ask yourself: How ambitious ARE the Eurondans given that they just found a whole new world with quite a bit lower tech level and they have already shown that they are ruthless enough to attempt planetwide genocide on one world

Hey there, ambitious and militaristic nation which believes everything I do in the exact same way I do! I'm gonna wipe you out because I'm an evil bastard and try to exploit your planet myself, even though I'm locked in a stalemated war on my own planet and could really use a proxy on your world to help further my own ends.

Is there anything known about the Eurondan war in 1939? IIRC the war had been going on for "generations" when SG1 got there, but they had only recently started to lose.

At this point the Eurondans have 'stopped winning' against the breeders, but have not yet lost their access to the sea, so fusion power isn't as critical.

Not quite what I meant. Was thinking more in terms of long term turning Nazi Germany to a puppet state and then up the stakes with more of their own tech against the rest of this Earth to make more use of local resources. In short steal the show.

EDIT: And with more of their own I mostly mean cheaper knockoffs produced locally in germany that are still better than norm. They obviously have their own local resources too stretched to send any serious ammount of their own Eurondian produced technology.

Fuckawesome! It lives! Since this is Stargate set during the start of WWII, does that mean Herr Set will take on the role that Baal eventually did in SG-1 of the genre-savvy antagonist?

And I'm guessing since Set has been in hiding for several thousand years he's going to be much better at staying in the shadows- the ultimate "Man behind the curtain".

Ah, yes, Norsk-Hydro in Vemork. My book on nazi nuclear research says that at the end od 1939 it has production capacity of approx. 10 kg of heavy water per month and approx. 185 kg of heavy water in storage. (D2O production: ~20 kg/mo in 1940, ~70 kg/mo in 1941, ~100 kg/mo in 1942, ~40 kg/mp in 1943; in total Germans managed to acquire approx. 2500 kg of heavy water)

Chapter 1

Hawthorne Naval Ammunition Depot, Nevada

As the man stepped off the train he looked around, smiling. Distant thunder rumbled from the mines, where two thousand enthusiastic but hard-faced men blasted americite ore out of the ground and shoveled it into trucks. Smoke rose in the distance, from forges and foundries which worked on a vigorous three-shift schedule around the clock under guarded conditions, processing precious americite ingots for the war effort. There was the bulk of the processing facility, looming in the east, where the precious material was bathed in a series of exotic radiations to enhance its’ energy potential, before it was shipped to a holding facility at the depot itself, prior to being sent elsewhere. Precise, meticulous, and vital to the war effort.

And a complete sham.

General Leslie Groves chuckled as he surveyed America’s newest, most secret mining facility. The perfect cover for an even greater, more sensational secret, one which would’ve sent Hitler into fits of fury if he had found out, and there was rumors of serious debate in the Cabinet over whether or not such a deception would actually cause the famously stoic Stalin to smile at the American deception. Though there had been much discussion on how to do it, in the end it was decided a fake secret mine would be the best cover for a genuine secret mine.

The scientists, engineers, and metallurgists working on the project had relished the idea of crafting an overly-elaborate ‘energizing process’ for the fake americite which was, in fact, a mixture of iron, copper, and zinc. If any axis spy managed to record the process, the only thing they would accomplish is creating a surprisingly heavy and hazardous fifty-pound bar. They had deliberately made the security on all parts of the operation light except for the holding facility inside the Hawthorne complex, to encourage would-be-agents to look elsewhere. It was inside that the bars were swapped out with the refined naquadah brought from abydos, while the ‘americite’ was shipped to Abydos and dumped into a holding pit a quarter-mile from the pyramid.

“General Groves!” A young man waved as he walked toward him. “Its good to see you.” He saluted, then shook his hand.

“Good to see you too, Mr. Undersecretary.” Groves returned the handshake.

“I’m sorry to meet you like this, General, I would have thought that Captain Hanneken would have gotten a bit more pomp to welcome you back.” Undersecretary White looked around, skeptically.

“All part of the act, Sir.” Groves began walking toward the facility. “It wouldn’t do to have much ceremony here, let alone have too many extra people wondering why a general is here in the first place.”

“I see,” White turned to walk with the general. “I had a similar greeting when I got here yesterday, I’m to head abroad on the next available ship.” He rolled his eyes a bit at the use of coded phrases, but the rules were quite clear; No open discussion of Stargate operations anywhere but inside the Hawthorne facility. Limited dreaming was permitted, provided one didn’t make a habit of it.

“Yes, I’d heard that. We’re sending a diplomatic mission somewhere?” They paused as they both showed ID at the heavy door to the facility, guarded by two fresh-faced youths with rifles.

“Tollana.” White nodded as the door closed behind them. “They’re incredibly smart, hundreds of years ahead of us. As near as Doctor Jones can figure, they’re some sort of offshoot of ancient Rome, and never had a dark age. They’re isolationist, like Japan was fifty years ago, but if they wanted to flex their muscles Bra’tac says the goa’uld would take notice.”

“Sounds like friends we should have.”

“Exactly what the President said. I’m taking Captain Puller with me as an observer, and I might be able to persuade Doctor Einstein to go along as well, perhaps add some weight to our requests for aid. From what I’ve read, I think we have a good chance of convincing the Tollan to send an envoy of their own to us.”

Before Groves could say anything else, a high-pitched voice cut through the air. “GENERAL GROVES!” A tall, lanky, Yugoslavian storm cloud was striding towards him. “General!”

“Doctor Tesla, it is good to see you again.” The general sighed inwardly.

“Do you know who is responsible for the delays in my naquadah procurement?” The elderly man was still as fiery as ever. He had dined with kings and potentates, and didn’t fear any general. “My work is at a critical stage, and the superconductivity I have been achieving is astonishing.”

“There’s a lot of people who need it besides you, Doctor. Solomon isn’t the only baby the War Department has.”

“Yes, I saw the manifests.” Tesla waved his hand. “Szilard I can understand, but Oppenheimer?! The man is a communist!”

“Be that as it may, Doctor, he’s our communist.” Groves reached into his suitcase and fished out a folio. “Besides, your work is going to have to wait.”

“What’s this?” Tesla flipped through the papers. “Hmmm… looks like one of Einstein’s ideas. Promising, though. How are you going to get the power properly channeled without killing everyone within a thousand yards?”

“That’s up to you to figure out. Now, if you’ll excuse us…” They continued down the corridor, leaving the man to continue reading the file, the wheels in his mind already turning.

Undersecretary White was still glancing over his shoulder at him as they left. “He is certainly… unforgettable.”

“He’s an ass, mister Understecretary.” Groves shrugged. “He’s also one of the smartest men who’s ever lived, and the only prayer we have of unlocking the secrets of goa’uld technology. If I could, I’d send him back to the moldy hotel room we found him in, but he gets along well enough with everyone, as long as he has enough napkins.”

“That’s why we requisition so many.” A voice called out to them from around the corner, and Captain Hanneken stepped out. “General, Sir.” He snapped off a smart salute.

“Captain, good to see you.” Groves saluted. “Is it here?”

“Yes sir, they’re getting her loaded on a flatcar now.” He ushered them through another set of heavy doors. Inside the large room stood the most valuable piece of equipment in the American military arsenal; The stargate.

Unearthed over a decade ago in Egypt, it had recently been deciphered by Doctors Einstein and Jones, who had taken a brief and spectacular journey to the far side of the galaxy, spectacularly launching the United States into the realm of interstellar politics. And now, the struggle was on to get as much material and information through the stargate and back to earth where it would go to arm America and her allies in the struggle against fascism. War was coming, Poland had already fallen and England’s fleet was taking to the seas.

Inside, the room was buzzing with activity. A small swarm of technicians and engineers prepped the gate for its bi-weekly dialing, double-checking all the power connections which would open the doorway between worlds. On a carefully-measured track, a number of trucks and cars waited for the go-ahead to begin racing through; a thirty-five minute window was tight when you were supplying what amounted to a small city, and already the technicians had grimly painted eight silhouettes on the main console of ‘kills’ where bumpers had been cut off by collapsing wormholes. Gate travel was not without risk.

In the middle of the room, however, on the large set of train tracks set into the floor, was a train car loaded with a heavy crate. The box was tied and covered with canvass, and had several men climbing on and inside it, making it secure. “There she is, General. All ready for Newport.”

“Newport, General?” White raised an eyebrow.

“Yes, just some mining equipment that’s being serviced.” Groves turned and gave the undersecretary a wink. “If you would please, give these orders to Doctor Jones when you see him, and let him know that these are far less… negotiable than previous orders he’s disregarded.”

“You aren’t coming to Abydos, General?”

“No, no, I’ve got everything I need right here.” He reached up and put a hand reverently on the crate. White looked at the stenciled lettering:

SHIP TO NEWPORT NEWS, VA.
TOP SECRET: PROJECT PROMETHEUS
