Worlds at War: A Draka/WorldWar/Aldenata Crossover

Post by R. E. Lee »

The basic premise of this is that this starts as the Draka world, as in the Stirling books, until the Race of Harry Turtledove's Worldwar books show up in 1942 and invade the planet. The world deals with this until 2001, when the Galactic Federation of John Ringo's Aldenata shows up to tell everyone that the Posleen are on their way. The beginning up until 2000 will be summarized in a timeline (which is interspersed with written interludes), and when the Galactic Federation comes into the scene it will turn into a full written story. So, without further ado, here is...

Worlds at War

A Draka/WorldWar/Aldenata Crossover

March 1941 – The Domination invades Italy, with secret German approval. Airborne Legions, reinforced soon by legions of Janissaries and more Citizens, quickly establish and expand beachheads. Italy surrenders after several months of very intense fighting. The Domination is condemned worldwide for its many atrocities.

22 June 1941 – The German Reich and its allies invade the USSR. The Soviets, forced to position a large portion of the Red Army on their border with the Domination, are quickly pushed back as German units have technological and tactical superiority, and in many cases numerical superiority as well.

3 August 1941 – Kiev falls to German troops.

1 October 1941 – Moscow falls to German forces. Stalin and several key politburo members are captured, as Stalin refused to leave the city. They are quickly executed, and the USSR becomes temporarily leaderless as surviving leaders squabble for power.

12 October 1941 – Stalingrad falls to German troops.

November 1941 – At the first snow of the year, the German Reich has taken all of the USSR up to the Urals and the Caucasus. They will make the Urals their new eastern border, and continue to advance to the south, to the Drakan border in the Caucasus.

3 December 1941 – The US declares war on the Japanese Empire and the German Reich after a devastating Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor destroys the entire USN Pacific Fleet.

4 December 1941 – Japanese forces land in the US state of the Philippines, British Malaya, and the Dutch East Indies. All will fall by the end of the month.

5 December 1941 – Japanese forces follow up their attack on Pearl Harbor with an invasion of the Hawaiian Islands. The US is thus pushed back to the Mainland.

27 December 1941 – The Invasion Fleet of the Race arrives in orbit above Earth. They are bewildered by how advanced the Tosevite technology is, with radar and jet aircraft rather than sword and bow being used.

January 1942 – All of the former USSR west of the Urals is officially annexed by the German Reich. The SS runs rampant in the newly occupied lands. The remnant USSR is still in political disarray as surviving factions battle for control.

The Alliance for Democracy is formally established after the Treaty of New York. The United Kingdom, the United States, and Australasia are the founding members. At first it is simply an alliance, but by the summer a joint intelligence agency, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), as well as a Special Forces unit, the Special Air Service (SAS), are established as the Alliance grows closer politically and militarily.

7 January 1942 – The IJA seizes Vladivostok and eastern Siberia from the USSR.

12 February 1942 – Japanese forces land in northern Australia, taking Darwin. They face Australasian troops, who are unable to contain them.

19 February 1942 – Acapulco, San Diego shelled by an IJN taskforce, lead by flagship Yamato.

March 1942 – Vyacheslav Molotov comes to power in the rump USSR after finally arresting Beria and forcing Marshall Timoshenko and his faction to recognize him as General Secretary. Molotov then begins to consolidate power. This is ignored by the rest of the world, as the USSR is widely dismissed as a world or even regional player.

9 March 1942 – Japan lands several divisions in the state of Panama, seizing the Canal.

17 March 1942 – The Japanese forces in Panama are reinforced, and begin to expand its territory. They are fighting the US Third Army under MacArthur.

April 1942 – The Domination of the Draka seizes key passes in the Caucasus Mountains, controlled by Germany. German forces in the Caucasus are routed; Draka begin advance north.

3 May 1942 – Drakan forces begin pincer movement from northwest Kazakhstan.

14 May 1942 – Battle of Kuban begins: German Sixth Army surrounded by Caucasus and Central Asian Drakan forces. Massive armored engagements between the German Panther and the Drakan Hond III tanks. German Army Group South is completely engaged with fighting the Draka; all other German forces in the former USSR are tied up in anti-partisan duties.

23 May 1942 – Germany begins to evacuate the remains of the Sixth Army by helicopter. They have lost this battle, and Army Group South tries to regroup.

27 May 1942 – Dissent begins to grow among certain German factions over Hitler’s handling of the war—his insistence on the primacy of his “Final Solution” tying up many resources, and keeping the Slavs down in the vast occupied areas of Russia is keeping the majority of the army from engaging the Draka.

30 May 1942 – The Race detonates nuclear weapons in the atmosphere, in an attempt to destroy Human electronics with EMP. Transistors, invented in the US in 1939, are rendered inert, destroying the efforts US computer project in Toronto but not harming the majority of the world’s vacuum-tube based systems.

31 May 1942 – Race forces land on Tosev. Their main landing sites are Southern Illinois and northern Mexico, USA; the Pampas, Argentina; central Colombia; southern Spain; the Ukraine; the western and central Sahara, Arabia, Mongolia in the Domination; northern India, Indochina, eastern China.

1-7 June 1942 – Race forces secure their landing zones, with dozens of ships of the Invasion Fleet setting down, and the forces begin to expand outward.

5 June 1942 – The Empire of Japan and the US, the UK, and Australasia (also known as the Alliance for Democracy) declare a ceasefire and exchange of POWs in order to deal with the new threat. The German Reich and the Alliance make a similar deal.

12 June 1942 – Buenos Aires, Argentina falls to the Race. Argentina can put up no resistance of note to the foot soldiers and Landcruisers of the Race.

16 June 1942 – St. Louis, Missouri, USA falls to the Race with only token resistance. The US, however, begins to bring its forces to bear against the Race as it transports them to the front.

21 June 1942 – The German Reich and the Domination of the Draka finally declare a ceasefire. There will be no exchange of POWs, however. Drakan forces are redeployed to Central Asia and Mesopotamia, and German forces are redeployed to the western Ukraine.

28 June 1942 – Race forces approach Shanghai. Japanese divisions are shipped in to defend the city from Formosa, but Japanese units are thin across much of China due to the war with the Alliance. As a result, Japan agrees to withdraw all forces in Australia (for immediate redeployment to China).

29 June 1942 – Second Battle of Kharkov begins in eastern Ukraine as Hitler orders a still disorganized Army Group South to engage the Race. The Germans are unable to contain the Race, mainly due to how disorganized they are and due to losses they already have incurred from the Draka. Hitler’s insistence in keeping Army Groups Center and North in keeping down partisans has caused some concerns in other parts of the government.

1 July 1942 – In Iberia, things look grim for human forces. Most of the southern part of the peninsula is in Race hands, with Race forces controlling Madrid, Lisbon, Gibraltar, and even Barcelona with help from the Race in southern France. Soviet Spain and Portugal are on the verge of collapse.

3 July 1942 – Delhi, British India falls to the Race. Colonial British forces and their native allies are not modernized enough or in large enough numbers to properly resist the Race, and the native Indians tend to support the Race besides.

5 July 1942 – The Race sends a force to liberate Italy, at the request of the Italians. Drakan forces in Italy, mostly pacifying forces and Security Directorate, are quickly pushed out of the mainland south of Tuscany. Draka in northern Italy begin to regroup, as legions from Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica are rushed to reinforce them; Draka caught in southern Italy are for the most part either evacuated to those islands by helicopter or fight to the death.

10 July 1942 – The UK and Australasia merge their nuclear programs with the US’ (now the Alliance for Democracy’s) Taos Project.

12 July 1942 – The Second Battle of Kharkov ends with Army Group South shattered. Already disorganized and chaotic from defeat after defeat to the Draka, the Race are just too much for it to bear. Tens of thousands surrender to the Race, with the remnant unable to contain the aliens anymore. The Race, however, will turn west, into Romania and towards the heart of the German Reich.

14 July 1942 – The two Race pockets in the Sahara link up, having faced no resistance that deep in the desert.

17 July 1942 – Bogota, Gran Colombia falls to the Race. Race forces are now fighting the Imperial Japanese Army in Panama as well.

22 July 1942 - The Yamato, in support of IJA operations in Manchuria, shells the Race landing site in Manchuria, destroying almost a dozen Race spaceships that had landed (one of them in a huge secondary explosion), and destroying much of the equipment of the Race troops in Manchuria. The Yamato successfully avoids counter battery fire from Race artillery, but is eventually sunk by Race killercraft. This is acceptable losses to the Japanese, who are very interested in the care the Race is taking to recover wreckage from one of the destroyed ships.

25 July 1942 – The great powers meet together in the first London Conference. The great powers, known as the ‘Big Five’—the USA, the Domination, Germany, Japan, and the UK—will meet in London periodically to discuss strategy against the Race.

I had always wondered what might happen if the Race landed whilst the Draka was beating the Germans, especially since the Race love Africa and would land there in large numbers. Remember, the Hond III is probably a match for the Races' Landcruisers, and their fighters aren't too bad either.

The Hond III is not in any way shape or form a match for a Landcruiser, it's basically pitching a 1950s tank against a 1990s one, not really a contest. Remember there's more to a tank than weight and engine space.

...well. Landcruisers are more like a 1970s or '80s tank. Judging by the effectiveness of WWII bazookas against them, they don't have advanced protection against HEAT weapons; I suspect they're more like the T-72 or the M-60 (possibly a late model M60) than like the Abrams, at least in terms of the quality of their protection.

But yes, the Draka are going to be little if any more effective against the Lizards than anyone else. Certainly a realistic Domination of the Draka wouldn't be (see the Drakafic joint setting for examples of what a realistic Domination might look like); even the implausibly deadly Draka of Stirling's setting just can't match the advantages the Lizards get from space superiority and semimodern electronics. Especially not if the Lizards are landing in their rear areas.

The Hond III had a 120mm gun, and was essentially designed like the Isreali's Merkava tank. Given the loadout of the Domination characterized in the books, the Race is at least matched by Draka military tech. Of course, the Draka do not have high-speed fighters, or missiles/anti-missiles, but they do have pretty good aircraft as well as their atomic bomb project. Unless they are nuked from orbit, there is no possiblity that the Race would be able to hold on to any possessions in Draka territory.

Besides that, the technology boost that the Race will give the Domination, who "orginally" advanced extremely quickly, will be insanely fast. The Posleen don't stand a chance in hell, but I wonder what the People will make of the Race.

Gun caliber doesn't grant armor penetration, not without a lot of other factors (metallurgy comes to mind). Ditto for armor design, ditto for engine power. I see no reason to assume that the Hond III would perform as well as an M1 or a Lizard landcruiser just from knowing that I can measure the same number of inches across the barrel.

For example, the IS-2 had a 122mm gun that had less armour penetration than the 100mm guns on the SU-100, and was, I believe, comparable to the 75mm gun on the Panther.

The main thing to look at is that the Hond III is not as vulnerable to Lizard tanks as the Germans or anyone else for that matter. Full specs on the Hond are never given in the book, but comments by Von Shrakenburg state that the Hond is better armored and has a better gun than the tanks the SS fielded against them. Now, given that during the Races invasion, German tanks lost 5 panzers for every lizard tank, that may not say very much for the Draka. Still, 3:1 or even 2:1 odds, given humans superior tactics, is forseable given the technological edge the Draka posses. Likewise, the Germans of the Draka-verse have more plentiful numbers of Panthers and Tigers, and are likewise more apt to be able to resist the Race.

IIRC, the IS-2 was designed as a seige tank, with its guns purpose being to blast open bunkers, not tanks.

Well, suffice to say that I dislike the Draka because I agree with the consensus here, on the part of a number of people I respect, that the Draka are unrealistic. So much so that they proceeded to try and write WWII Draka stories based on a more realistic Draka, which I consider to be quite good.

So maybe this is just me expressing my general "bleh" sentiment about how unreal Stirling's Draka are with respect to the advanced state of their equipment (and the advanced state of material science and such that it implies).

Seems in tanks at least, this matchup of the Hond III and Landcruiser, pitted late 1950s design like a T-54 equivalent to a T-72/Leopard 1 equivalent of the 1960s, both should be handily better then Panther Tank of the 1945, though the Landcruiser should still have large edge in technology despite being of similar size and gun calibur.
