This is an idea I've had bouncing around in my head for a long time. Please ignore the title, as it's a spur of the moment thing. Anyway, without further ado:
Sometimes, Snake really hated being who he was. If he had born as a normal person, he mused, perhaps he wouldn't find himself slogging through the South American jungle on some sort of godforsaken sci-fi movie plot. The faint 'buzz' of an incoming Codec call interrupted his musings, however, and he ducked down behind a tree stump to receive the call. Thankfully, because it directly stimulated his inner ear, he didn't need to worry about eavesdroppers.
"Snake." He nodded to himself; Otacon, right on time, as usual. "I've made it to Alpha Point," Snake replied. "Good. Have you made contact with the enemy yet?" "Negative. It appears like they haven't left the target." Otacon frowned, and paused for a moment. That just didn't add up. "Snake, don't you find that strange?" "No, not particularly. You already told me this isn't the usual target, so maybe they're just sitting tight." Otacon sighed. He really hated having to manipulate Snake like this sometimes, but the ex-secret agent tended not to go along with things he found suspicious. "Okay Snake, I have a confession to make." Snake shook his head. "That's just great. What is it now, Otacon?" "Well, I did tell you this was a different kind of mission, but I haven't told you why. You've heard of the Aeon incident, right?"
This gave Snake a pause. "You're talking about the spaceship that crashed in 1967, aren't you?" Otacon nodded; he had expected Snake to know at least a little about the incident, after all. "The government was quick to classify it as an SDI experiment that went down. Nothing too serious, right?" Snake slumped against the tree...he figured when something like that came up, it meant a lengthy explanation would follow. "Well, it was actually a ship from another planet. The wreckage was seized by a man named Henry Starling, who used the technology onboard to start his own supercomputer corporation." His eyes narrowing, Snake considered how to reply while rooting around in his pockets for a package of cigarettes and his lighter. He took a quick puff before responding: "Okay, you mind telling me where you got this information? And what does this have to do with our mission, Otacon?"
Otacon gave a slight grin and adjusted his glasses, a nervous habit that always made Snake feel a little uneasy. "Well, a few days ago NASA satellites picked up an object of similar size and mass crashing down not too far from your present location. I don't think it needs to be said what sort of havoc such a discovery could cause in this day and age...that's why PHILANTHROPY has us on this assignment." Snake sighed. He never got the easy jobs. "Okay, that's a lot to absorb. Why can't we just get a rogue Metal Gear like usual?" "Sorry Snake, reality can be tough sometimes. You know your objectives, right?" Snake nodded. "Of course; I'm to get on this ship and get whatever information I can before I blow it sky-high, right? That's what the C4 is for." "Right." Snake suddenly got a wierd tingling sensation in the back of his head.
A quick glance at his Soliton Radar display showed a massive swath of electromagnetic interference: it looked like someone with a big sensor net was looking for him. But unfortunately, they had just gotten his attention as well. Poking his head around the stump, Snake peered through a gap in the foliage...off in the distance a man in a red-and-black jumpsuit was approaching, holding what appeared to be a VCR remote of some kind. Snake reached for his hip, and retrieved his silenced SOCOM; this was easy money. The guy hadn't picked him up, despite the massively noticeable signature of his scanner. Snake grinned, lined up his pistol, and fired a single shot....
EDIT: Boy, do I feel dumb making a redundant sentence like that.

Author's notes
First things first, this is mostly a teaser. I ended up getting rushed into finishing this, so I may or may not go back and 'fix' it, depending on what you guys think. Secondly, I'd like to apologize for the verbose writing...it just kinda happened. Anyway, feel free to be as mean or as nice as you like when leaving comments.

Yep. Say what you will about ditl.org, but his timeline is highly nickable, and that's where I got it from. Eventually I plan for this to have as many layers as an onion...errr, typical Metal Gear game, yes. There are a lot of parties who could be involved in an incident of this kind....</Cryptic Reference>
