The Best of Your World

Synopsis: Mere seconds after the end of ‘The Next Generation' episode “The Best of Both Worlds Part II”, Q pays a recuperating Picard a visit...

Riker had just left the room, leaving Picard to his thoughts and demons. He had just given his first officer permission to get underway. The Enterprise-D would be docking shortly at Earth McKinley System. The damage done to the Federation flagship was heavy, with most of it centralized in the star drive section. It would be over a month before the ship would be capable of leaving Spacedock and resuming her continuing mission to explore strange new worlds and to seek out new life and new civilizations.

Yet it would never be the same for Starfleet 11, 000 people were dead. 40 Starfleet vessels made up the newly formed Wolf 359 graveyard. The Enterprise-D was heavily damaged and with the exception of his senior staff and Guinan, his crew’s trust in him was probably shattered forever, even if he hadn’t been acting of his own free will.

All because of the Borg.

All because of him.

But all of it could be laid at the doorstep of--

“Oh come now Jean-Luc, didn‘t your mommy tell you not to blame everyone but yourself?”

Picard slowly turned away from the Ready Room’s window. He instantly recognized the voice and didn’t need to look at the man in a current Starfleet command-type uniform leaning against the doorframe. This was the last person he wanted to see at this moment.

“Q. Get out you bastard.”

Q raised an eyebrow.

“I’ll just pardon your French for a moment, Jean-Luc. Besides what do you have against an onimpotenet being such as myself?”

Picard turned slowly, his fists clenched

“Thousands of people died all because of you, Q and for what? Your own personal amusement? A test of mankind?!”

Q

“Innocence lost, Jean-Luc. That’s what we have here. And no, it was no for amusement. In some ways, yes it was a trial. Humankind needed an introduction to a necessary evil. And believe you and me. In about six, seven years from now, and this is on your temporal plane, you’re going to be very glad that I introduced you to the Borg.”

“What?!”

Q just shrugged.

“Well, I really shouldn’t say this, but you’re going to face a grave threat that will test your resolve, your dedication to your pathetic little organization, and change your Federation forever. In short, Captain, your worlds will be at war. And to answer your question, no it won’t be the Borg.”

This startled Picard who despite his anger, was slightly curious.

Not the Borg? Then who? The Klingon Empire is stable under K’mpec, the treaty with the Cardassian Union has almost been finalized. Hell even the Romulans and the Tholian Assembly aren’t up to anything. What could he mean?

“Q, what is it you’re trying to tell me?”

Q leaned forward as if to whisper into the captain’s ear, then stopped shortly and began

“You’ll find out, Jean-Luc. In any case, I’ll still be dropping in to see you from time to time so keep you eyes open, mon captitan!”

With another flash, the omnipotent entity was gone from Picard’s ready room. He Didn’t understand the nature of Q’s visit and didn’t care. He needed to get off this ship.

He needed to go home.

OK, but you need to check your grammar. The mistakes really interrupt the flow.

Weren't there 39 ships destroyed at Wolf 359? IIRC, the Endeavour under Captain Amasov made it out.

I'd like to read more before I make any judgments. Same goes for your other stories.

Uh, I'd like to make something clear: despite what people think this was meant to be simply a one-shot story.
