First crack at fanfic, so it's gonna be a little rough. No porn, or sex, but violent war scene to be expected, however. Have fun, kids.

Chapter 1 - Turn the Page

I used to enjoy my dreams. For along time, I slept well. I slept easy, I would actually wake up in the early hours of the morning and feel refreshed - no cold sweat, no trembling, just relaxed and at ease. The day would be something I would look forward to, and something I enjoyed. I knew a lot of people in those days, and I had alot of friends. I enjoyed basking in their warm glow, and took strength in their numbers. Whenever I tripped up, whenever I was in trouble, I had friends and family to reach out to and to help me. With such a deep and reliable network of support, I simply refused to believe that I could fail. The galaxy was at my feet, a vast empty canvas full of incredible promise. I was indesctructible. I went to bed each night, dreaming of the power that I would one day wield. I was always the great hero in my dreams, the Jedi Knight who slayed countless minions of the Dark Side, the heros who paved the stars looking for the edge of Space, the conqueror, the poet, and the great sorceror. The wickedness of my foes would always be overcome by my own bravery, and the fair maiden would always play her role well and fall deeply in love at all the appropriate climactic moments.

I don't know when things began to change, but they did. I don't really remember when I first saw her, or first met her, either. Kind of funny how it just seems like somebody jacked a memory hookup into my brain and downloaded her into my mind. She wasn't there, than all of a sudden she was.

Forgive me for being so rude, I haven't properly introduced myself. My name is Mayer Rhylskin. I work for Rhytam LTD, on an out of the way space station known as Ferpal Station. Actually, "out of the way" would be an understatement. Ferpal Station is so far from anywhere, it might as well be no where. I suppose I ought to ask why a reputable shipping company like Rhytam LTD would want to send resources and employees out to no where, when they could probably be put to better use anywhere else. But then again, I'm not exactly supposed to be asking those kind of questions. Dangerous for business, or something to that effect I suppose. Most of the executives aren't exactly encouraging employees to display thier inquisitive minds. So in the end, I'm still a happy employee for a major galactic shipping company working on a small time station in the middle of no where, not asking any questions.

We lost our third CO about two months ago. We first got a Bothan, who two weeks after his arrival decided that he didn't approve of his assignment and shot himself with a blaster. The second CO was lost when a drunken transport pilot deftly maneuvered his YT-1300 into the control tower. The last one just simply vanished. Rumors flew around for weeks afterwards, some saying that he hitch hiked off the station with a transport and took control of an outlying colony. Some say that the Empire arranged the disappearance, because he was an imperial spy who needed to be brought back to wherever imperial spies come from for a debreifing. Commander Surgin, the default base captain now, seems to think that the CO was swallowed by a space slug while exploring a nearby asteroid field. I personally think he stepped into an air lock and ended it.

Anyways, more about myself. I'm from Alderaan. At least I was from Alderaan. It's been four years since Alderaan disappeared. And I would be lying if I said that I missed it. Most of my life was at Alderaan, every last friend and family member I ever had was there. You would think that I would shed a tear, and bow my head whenever somebody mentioned the place. But I ran away from the place screaming. I was desperate to get away. I had to get away from her.

I should probably tell you that I don't really work for Rhytam LTD. After I left Alderaan for the last time, I joined the Rebellion. After they trained me, they told me to come here and join Rhytam. They told me to keep my eyes and ears open, keep looking, and be patient. So here I sit on Ferpal Station, waiting. Waiting for something to happen. My eyes and ears are wide open this time, and when that something does happen, I'll be waiting.

Chapter two might not be for a while. School is kicking my ass right now. Should I just post it here, or should I set up a new topic for it?

Post here. Don't start a thread for a new chapter.

Chapter 2 is looking like it's gonna take a while longer, at least until winter break comes around. Term papers and exams are taking up all of my writing time right now, and I just have no motivation to write it yet. Sorry for the long delay, and I hope I haven't kept anybody in undue suspense.

Basically the concept centers around Mayer. He's a fairly low level Rebellion spy who happens upon some evidence of an Imperial research program. the research problem is a bioweaps program, but for now its strictly a research program - no testing, no actual production. Mayer starts finding out more and more about it, and it becomes also becomes clear that Mayer has his own personal problems. It is not clear if those problems will interfere with Mayer's ability to do his job. RotJ happens, and the Emperor dies. The death of the emperor changes the program dramatically, as a fanatical loyalist to the emperor takes it over and accelerates the research, and opens testing and production facilities to couple with the research. It is unclear if the loyalist wishes to actually deploy the bioweaps project, or simply use it as a deterrent, but the program will take an active role in his plans to undermine the New Republic. Mayer slowly realizes that he is in a race against time, he needs to learn as much about the program as he possibly can and alert Republic forces before it actually is complete.
