Hi all this is my first attempt at a fan fict. I would love some good constructive critism.

In the years following the incident between Picard and Shinzon many things have happen to change the Federation for what some have consider to be harmful. As Starfleet was still rebuilding from the war with the Dominion other non-allied empires decided to take advantage of their weakness. After spending several years trying to put down numerous small fires on the opposite side of the federation things are beginning to calm down.
Chap 1.
Halfway through Lieutenant Smith alpha shift in the research lab his com badge broke the silence. “Lieutenant Smith report to the captain as soon as possible.” Sighing to himself that he would never get done he saved his work on his padd. As he approached the Captain office he wondered what went wrong this time.
Upon hearing the command to enter he walked through the door. There sat the captain facing out the facing studying the ship being built. “Well lieutenant I have some news that is good and bad.” He said and after pausing for a little while he continued. “The good news is your request for transfer came through.” And with that he turned and smiled. “The bad news means that I lose a good officer.” Standing he offered a hand in congratulations. “Sit down and let me tell you where you are going.”
“You are being assigned to 5th fleet 902nd squadron. They are currently rebuilding after their last encounter with a group of small but rather nasty pirates that had salvaged ships and weapons from the various battles.” Sighing he continued, “Command has decided to revamp the structure of the squadron with some new ideas. First the rebuilt squadron is going to consist of one Sovereign, two Intrepids, five Defiants and one mobile station.” “You are being assigned to the USS Jusiter a modified Intrepid. You main purpose will to be liaison between the ship and the first graduating class of marines to enter service.” With that he paused and look at the stricken look on Smith face.
“Sir” Smith begin “With all due respect I have heard about these so called marines.” “I know several people that live near there training bases and they are nothing but problems.” “ They break curfew and causes lots of problems on the town. They can’t follow rules and are very uncivilized.”
“Well lieutenant if you think about what they go through you should understand. They spend almost a year learning to kill in very harsh environments.” He paused and with a look of sorrow on his face. “It’s a sad day when we have to resort to a barbaric method such as those before the federation. But we have no choice.” “And from what I know of their training the only time they seem to cause trouble is when they are not on duty.”
“Sir I see where you are going but I still not quite sure but I’ll do what ever is necessary to get back to the stars.”
“Good lieutenant a ship taking you will be departing tomorrow morning.” Handling a padd to the lieutenant. “Here are the all the specifics you’ll need to see you on the way.”
“Thank you it’s been a pleasure serving with you.” And with that the lieutenant turned and left the office.
